I do worship the Leroux book. It's one of my favorite books, and I can get very Leroux-purist-ish on occasion. But the comic book doesn't entirely seem "based off the Leroux novel." Hell, Susan Kay's Phantom was based off the Leroux novel, and while it was a decent book in the beginning, the rest of it kinda spiraled into oblivion. I mean, I like the Kay novel, but it's not as wonderful as it's cracked up to be.

And...*Raises hand* I am complaining that Gerard Butler was too muscular to be Erik. And too "hot" (I do not find him attractive myself). And plenty of other things that just make me hate him.

I understand what you're saying about why you think it's going to be good. But that's not what we're talking about. It's that something about it seems not quite in character of the novel or anything else. I've noticed that the people who seem to think that this comic book will be kind of bad are the people who like the Leroux novel as well. You should try revising your argument as to the reason it seems wrong is because it's based off the Leroux novel instead of ALW's musical. It doesn't hold up.

I'll probably flip through it at my local comic book store and buy the first one if it doens't make me gag, just to have it. But Erik seems too OOC. Buff? tan? aiel? wtf no.

ew....No I don't think I'm, going to like this one bit, first off it's way more of a comic book look rather than manga look (so what if I have a bias? ninja ) which gives a harsher and boxier look, yeah I just hate the style in general (although that's never a reason to put down a comic in the first place...). And I already HATE the way Erik is portayed (not to mention that realistic looking cg of him...buff???) what's with the bag/rug?...okay...I guess that's his mask but what's with the getup? a vest and bare arms? Doesn't look very menacing for the "living corpse" which according Leroux was his name within that gypsy band getup. And What's with that old guy giving Erik advice? Erik would punjab the idiot on the spot for saying that (becuase he's not supposed to have friends....)

"Then I will trouble you no more sir" scream wtf?! that does not sound like something Erik would say to haughty gaurd that asked him to take his mask off...

The only thing that looked intresting was all the little killing getups in the sketchbook section....but then there was more buff Erik which made me gag gonk

I agree, but will still do anything to obtain anything doing with it....

Yes YES! Thank you for saying that. He's like 20 right now and hasnt really perfected his hatered for the rest of humanity. He's still young and hasnt had the opportunity to nurture his sadistic side either. If Erik seems "out of character" its cause he hasnt fully matured into the punjabbing kickass angel of music that we all know, love and are comfortable with. This is acctually before he had his punjab lasso as well 3nodding . Kay wrote it that he had it before he came to persia, but that area that the lasso holds the namesake for is closer to persia then Europe. Not to mention she even mentioned that he had never been in that area of the world yet, so how would he have been able to know and construct something like the lasso. I know that we'd all love to think that he was the one that invented it but you gotta take into concideration that that might not be the case. He just perfected the art. wink 3nodding

But I digress, Erik is young. He gets the chance to show his ruthless side here in Persia. Give the comic a chance before you shoot it down wether you're purists of Kay or ALW or not. Just keep in mind that the author of the Trap Door Maker tried to stay as close to the GL book. Kay and Webber took quite a bit of artistic liberty if you think about it. 3nodding

I find it refreshing that someone is trying to stay as true to the GL book as they could. Though of course he is going to have to try and fill in the gaps that the book dosent cover but from what I've read so far (and I've read all of chap 1 cause i'm in contact with the author wink ) its a good story premise. I look forward to reading it. I like the styalized art and that the author did his research to what the clothing would have been during the mid to late 19th century in Persia. That's why Erik looks kinda like Alladdin sweatdrop , its because that's just what you wore back then. 3nodding

I mean come ON Erik isnt stupid enough to go around in a full suit in 100+ degree weather with a 100% humidity. That would just be insane, he might as well lock himself in the mirrored torture room while its on and throw away the key. It would be to about the same effect. 3nodding

If I've left anything out then please feel free to add.

Oh on a different note I am working to get the Author to come and guest speak here on our thread. If you want to do some Q&A with him let me know and we can arrange a day where those interested can come and ask stuff. Or you can ask now and I can Email him the questions and do an interview type of thing and your questions can get answers.

I'm sure that even if someone else had done it there would be people complaining about it. And that's ok. Not every body can like the same thing. Not everybody likes phantom, and I was expecting that not all phantom fans were going to like this. Cause there's always the strict critic that beleives that they know what things should be like.

Yes, I like the mana form too. But I'm not gonna let that inhibit me from likeing this comic. Its just another version of Erik that I can grow to adore. I mean come on, there's like 10 different versions of him out there. Each one has their own redeeming characteristics. Just cause this one is a little different dosent really make him all that off from the others. He's the same in his uniqueness. But its still the same poor tortured soul that we all love.

If you want manga form then look up Le Masque by Narumi Kakinouchi . She was done the same person that did Vampire Princess Miyu. But be warned its only based off of Phantom of the opera. And Christine isnt named Christine. And she's a dancer not a singer. There's a deviation from the norm. I'm gonna b tryin to get a copy of my own. I'll scan some of the first couple of pages in so yall can see. But its out of print and I gotta find it where ever I can. Its also in japanese so its gonna take me a bit to translate it. There are a couple of sites that have already done it tho I think. I'll have to see if I can find them.

Ok, update. The Author Peter Bregman is willing to guest speak. I propose next sat between noon and 3pm. That way there'll be enough time for everyone to clear out their schedule. I'll even make a special thread for it. smile

Perhaps if all goes well I can work to see if I can get Susan Kay to guest speak as well. That'll take some work but I might be able to do it. if she's agreeable.

I second the complaint of Erik being too muscular. But...men generally do gain so muscle tone when they go through puberty. Mayhaps it's just that.

I'm also a fan of the manga style, but this looks rather enjoyable. I think I'm too cheap to pay for it though. Plus my stupid anime/game obsessions are sapping me dry. Not to mention I just went to the ALW play......yeah.

I look forward to the interview

Tell me how you're going to turn out after living on your own, fending for your life and being in an area where if you are going to survive and earn money you have to go out into the sun. Erik would have quite a bit of muscle on him and he would probably have gotten a bit of a tan. Remember tho he already had a yellow pigment to his skin, with a slight tan it would only emphasize it.

Sheesh, you people with the serious problems dont seem to remember that Erik is only human. And he is susceptable to the laws of physiology and physics. He is not some all wonderful magician that can break physics and do as he will. He is not some Uber god because if he was do you really think he'd have stayed ugly of his free will?

Yes, he would have gotten a bit of a tan. Yes he would have gotten quite a bit of muscle from puberty and from having to live on his own chopping wood, having to be strong so that if he is attacked he can defend himself etc.

But anyway, I got Peter Bregman coming in under the handle Trapdoormaker. I'm sending him the link to here so we can all talk to him. I'm looking forward to intellegent questions. And please....dont flame him if you're not a fan of such styles. ASK CREDIBLE QUESTIONS, PLEASE! It is rude and mean to do such things to published authors. You wouldnt do that to Susan Kay, or ALW if you didnt like their stuff would you? If no then please dont do it to this one. If yes.....then dont bother to comment.

Remember the saying. "If you cant say something nice dont say nothing at all" Well in this case if you cant be polite at least, dont post at all. I know I sound a bit bitchy but I just would like for politeness for the guest.

Dude. In. That. Comic. Book. Erik. Is Completely. Out. Of. Character. It is part of his deformity that he is extremely thin, not just because he's anorexic. And we are not flaming the author. These are intelligent reasons as to why the comic book seems...well...crappy.

And why the hell is he chopping wood? He's supposed to be a musician, not a logger for god's sake. You're complaining about us not relying on the facts, but nowhere does it ever say that Erik ever chopped wood. Erik ran away from his mother, ended up in a freak show, got a job as a torturer for the sultana of Persia, and at lest became the phantom. Cannon Erik wouldn't be chopping wood. He just wouldn't.

And, actually, I would be critical of Susan Kay or ALW, mainly because some major parts in their rentition of PotO suck. Let's be honest here.

I might add too...I hate that saying.
