"Yes. I had two daughters. But now I only have one. The one that matters. But that's a very long story. She was a handful and always gave me my daily exercise but now she's off doing her own thing and breaking boys hearts." He smiled to Chaci, talking about Kahili always made things better. "Well, all but one. She's pretty stuck on one guy. Why, I haven't a clue but she sees something in him. As long as she's happy. And I'm rambling. Sorry 'bout that." He smiled apologetically.

"No worries." Chaci chuckled, watching the stream. "No boy will ever be good enough for you will they?" She gave a laugh, glancing at the male out of the corner of her eye. "I'd love to meet her some day. If she's anything like you, I bet we'd be great friends. "

"Well...I suppose. She's definitely more like me than her mother but she takes it a little farther. Sometimes it's like she's a filly just stuck in a bigger body." He laughed. "She's just so...Full of life and doesn't worry about small trivial things. She didn't have the perfect childhood. Mom and dad around all the time, brothers or sisters to play with. But she makes the best of it. I'd bet you anything she'd say she had the time of her life as a kid. That's just how she is." He smiled and flopped onto his side to enjoy the feel of the cool grass. He always spoke of Kahili like the proud father that he was. "I bet you two would be good friends. She can make nice with just about anyone," he laughed.

Chaci gave a laugh, shaking her head. She really didn't have to many friends outside of her herd and family, so anyone new was welcome.
"So..." She coughed lightly, scuffing a hoof across the dirt. "If I may...What exactly happened between you and Kahili's mother?"

Mel sighed as he lay there in the grass. He'd never really talked about it with anyone, not even Kahili. Mainly because he didn't want her to think that she was a mistake which was exactly the opposite. He never gave the full story to his family either in case they thought he had screwed up. Why should he be giving so much on his life story to this practical stranger? ...Maybe because that was just it, she's a stranger. Her opinion didn't matter like his family's did because he could just shrug it off.
"Setsumi and I were friends. She'd had a bad past and she was telling me about it one day. She just...broke down. I felt so sorry for what had happened to her but I was there for comfort. And of course comfort leads to other unexpected things and then wham bam 'Mel, I'm pregnant'." He had to laugh about it now. "I was freaked out of my mind. I was just a kid myself. But I stayed with her through it all. Now Sumi's moved on and found herself a good home and had more kids since then, which I'm happy for her. She deserves to be happy. We're still friends of course. We have to be to gang up on Kahili sometimes if she's being a pill. She's a good mother and I don't regret anything that happened. So there's my story, pretty sad huh?"

Chaci nodded sagely, listening to him intently.
"I wouldn't say sad. Everyone miss steps from time to time. Its how you recover that shows your true self. And you handled it wonderfully. " She smiled, shrugging her shoulder. "Alotta males woulda taken off right there. It was very adult of you to stay even if you were young."
She ginned, looking at the sky. "Well, my story is sorta like that I guess. Minus the fact I didn't have kids. My human ran into an old friend of hers, and her herd of Soq. Well, we made really good friends with the herd, and there was this one male. Kama..."She smiled whistfullly for a moment. "Kama was a shy soul, scared to death of anything female. I took a liking to him..." She coughed. "It was at this point in my life where I wanted to be an adult SO badly...I was tired of bing treated like the baby in my family. So I thought having kids would make me an adult. Well, looking back, that was a silly idea. Ty ended up talking me out of it...And I made my decision to have a mate who loves me before I have kids..." She blushed, looking away. "If I can find one, that is..."

"That was a very wise decision. I don't think anyone should have kids for those reasons. Children are a symbol of love you have with someone special. Sure accidents happen, some people make the best out of it and others abandon their children. You don't seem like the type to abandon your children but you do seem like the one that should have the loving family she deserves. I hope you get it someday. That may sound kind of cheesy but it's true."
Mel thought about what she had said and it was really nice to hear that coming from her. His parents had to say stuff like that, they were forced to love him and accept him. But she didn't have to say things like that. She just did and that made him smile. "Thank you. That means a lot to hear."

Chaci laughed, shaking her head. "Your welcome!"
Cheesy? It was actually nice to hear. It was nice to know that a pratical stranger throught that she made the right decision. Even if her friends and family had said it was, it was still nice to hear it from someone else.

Mel nodded to her. "Anytime."
He sat up and shook the grass out of his mane. His coat had dried in the heat but it was starting to cool off as the sun moved away, closer to the horizon. "So now that we've each told our stories, what happens next?" His eyes turned to look at her and found himself wondering about her. Was this just another person he was going to meet and then never see again? Was he meant to meet her for some reason? If he was, what made her so special? ...Why was he thinking so much?? He shook his head a bit. He would stop thinking and just focus on the now. Let the pieces fall where they may and see just what she was about.

The cream-coated mare gave a delecate shrug. What was going to happen next?
"I 'unno...Whatever we want to happen next I guess."
We're they friends? Ships that pasted each other in the night? Or would they stay in contact? Did he see something in her? She saw something in him alright, something she hadn't seen in a good long while. She hoped they didn't let this friendship die...SHe wanted to see where things went.

Mel was just about to suggest they go their seperate ways since their conversation had died down but something caught his attention. A smell. His head whipped around and saw the black smoke billowing up into the sky. Why hadn't they noticed earlier?? The wind that had cooled them only moments before was now going to prove a major problem. And his point was only proven as the wind picked up embers and small fires sprang up where they settled. If they didn't leave now they would end up trapped. "We need to go. Now." He shot to his feet and nudged her up to hers, leading her off back to the stream at a full gallop. Water was the best place to be but the small stream would do them very much good for long.
Once they were back at the stream where they'd met her did a quick roll in the water to get his body wet. "Do what I did. The dampness with give us more time if the fire comes close." He then started off down the stream at a brisk trot, careful to watch the rocks and keep his footing. The wind kept up right with them, fueling the fire towards the same direction. "The water gives us some shelter but it won't for long. We'll follow it down until it empties which should be in some larger body of water. We need to stay ahead of it but the wind is faster and fire knows no bounds. Keep up as best you can."

Chaci gave a gasp of horror, numbly moving behind the larger male. Doing as he instruted, she kept pace as best she could. She stumbled slightly, catching herself on the bank near a spot of flame. Jerking back in shock, she tumbled to her haunches. She blinked, shaking off whatever that moment of gracefulness was, and took off behind him.
"How exactly are we going to out run THAT!" She jerked her head back, watching as several trees erupted into flames. "Its moving faster than we are." She was NOT going to die here, that was for damn sure. "I know this area! There's a large lake nearby."

“We’ll be fine as long as we stick to the water.” The flames were snaking up along both sides of the bank. He deliberately made more splashing as his hooves hit the water to put out the small flames for a few seconds before more came up to take over again. As the stream wound it’s way through the fields it turned at an angel where the fire was sweeping straight across the water. He stopped and watched the flames in front of him. There was no way to know how far the flames went and how many feet of fire they would have to go through to get to the other side. The heat had evaporated the water that had been on his coat before and he turned to Chaci. “I’ll go through first. I don’t know how far the flames go so just go as fast as you can after me. I’ll call back when I get through. If I don’t call…” He paused and just shook his head. “I’ll call. Get yourself good and wet before you go. Don’t go until I call back.” He rolled himself in the water until he was dripping wet then touched her cheek with his nose before he ran straight into the flames that raged across the stream.

Was he nuts?! Runnning through that?! there had to be another way through the flames! She dropped, rolling about in the water, waiting on him to call. She waited, straining to hear his call. Where was he? He could leave her like this!
"MEL?! MEL?! If your dead I swear to the gods i'm gunna kill you!"
She paniced. So that last state made no sence, but hey. It was a stressfull time.

If it seemed like an eternity to her it felt even longer to him. Flames licked at him from all directions, the water evaporating at a fast pace and he could feel parts of his fur get singed. He took one last leap and he was through to the other side and he took another roll in the water to cool himself off. He let out a sigh of relief at seeing the lake just up ahead.
He turned back to the flames and called to her. "Go now! Fast! Don't stop 'till you're through!" He backed up a couple steps so that when she plowed through she didn't plow straight into him.
