Faolan watched her. "Elle, I know you ain't happy with this. I didnae mean to hurt you, girl. I just wanted to help Lee and I couldnae think of a better option at the time to justify takin' her." He looked down. "Just wanted her to be safe."
He looked up at Elle then. "You think we should give it a try? The three-way marriage, I mean. We got three months to sort things out. We could try it and see how it goes. I'll keep lookin' into gettin' her adopted still, though."

"We can try," Ellandra said softly, though the statement was a bit difficult for her to say. "Besides. . . isn't that what the three-month period is for, anyway? To try it and see how it goes?"

"Yeah, it's supposed to be for the couples to rethink things and give it a try before decidin' to call it quits." Faolan pulled her over into a hug. "No lies, love. Are you really alright with this? You know we can annul it tomorrow. We donnae have to do this if you donnae want to."

Ellandra sighed, and was silent for a long time. "I. . . honestly don't know if I'm all right with it or not, Faolan," she said quietly. "It. . . it hurts, I can't deny that. But I can't just turn Lee away, either, not after she sought us out for help. . . not and send her back to that family of hers." She paused again and chewed her lip for a moment. "I couldn't make her suffer like that. . . and. . . well, better to try than to make her suffer William - he's worse than you've seen, believe me."

"I've an idea of what he might be like under that pompous exterior," Faolan said, nodding. "Maybe it wonnae be so bad, yeah? Could be nice havin' another member of the family to give a hand when needed." He bumped her shoulder playfully. "No worries, love. I ain't gonna lie with her. Donnae need anymore kids right now and she's too young. Figure you'll benefit more'n me with her bein' here to help when the twins are born and all that."

"Ah - about that, Faolan," Ellandra said quietly, "I don't think she'd want anything to do with them or to be around them, really. I don't think Lee likes children very much." Of course, that might just be because she'd had nearly no exposure to them, but Ellandra didn't want to force the teenager to put up with something she couldn't stand.

"Give her time, love. She'll come around," Faolan said softly. "She's just young. A month or so here and she'll warm up to the idea of weans underfoot."

"Perhaps," Ellandra said quietly. "But I'm not so sure. . . Lauss is very childlike in some ways, after all. . ." She didn't think that needed to be elaborated on, really. Speaking of Lauss. . . "I think Lauss and Rhian are probably the happiest I've ever seen either of them," she said, an amused smile creeping onto her face as - at last - she leaned into Faolan's hug.

Faolan looked back into the vardo, thoughtful expression on his face. "Three Essentics under one roof. This will be interesting." He looked down at Elle and smiled. "You can make some rules in this, you know. Tradition is pretty much the husband sets the rules, but . . . I ne'er really thought it was good to not have some balance. This is a good time to make a few demands of me and discuss how you expect me to be conductin' myself in this marriage."

Ellandra shrugged a little. "I don't know what sort of rules I would make, Faolan; that's never been an area I have much skill in," she said quietly. "And as for the Essentics. . . I have the feeling Rhian and Lauss will balance each other. . . and perhaps keep each other out of trouble." Or at least, not get each other into it, because the kinds of problems those two could get into together. . . that was a frightening thought.

Faolan nodded. "Zia will keep an eye on them, too." He glanced at her sidelong. "If we're supposed to try and make this work, then I'm gonna have to show some affection to the girl. How much are you gonna be okay with?"

Ellandra tilted her head and chewed her lip. "I - I don't know the answer to that, Faolan, I really don't. . . but if this is something to try and make really work, then. . . I suppose I need to get used to however much you wish to give her."

"We'll just take it slow, one day at a time. I do somethin' you ain't ready for, then tell me. Donnae walk off or try and pretend it's all okay. I wanna know if you're bothered. Otherwise, this ain't gonna work," Faolan said, pulling her against him and stroking her hair. "I'll tell Lee the same thing. I think it'll work if we just keep communicatin'."

"I suppose that's all we can do," Ellandra said quietly, looking out over the carnival grounds. "Though . . . I wonder where we'll be able to fit the twins in, now, with it being so crowded - and it's going to get moreso when Rhian and Lauss grow . . ."

Faolan chuckled softly. "I donnae mind so many underfoot. We'll just sort out the arrangements as we go. We got three months to sort out a marriage and a little longer'n that to sort out everything else before the twins come."
