“I, too, am a sucker for happy endings.” She answered him agreeably, finding that she liked him increasingly as the conversation progressed. He was handsome, polite, and she knew from his profession that he must be reasonably intelligent. He did seem a bit awkward, but under the circumstances, who wouldn't be? The male had a nice smile, and honest eyes.

Willowbreeze glowed at the compliment. “I'm so glad you enjoyed it.” The shyness with which he praised her was almost charming, and she found herself trying to catch his eye as she responded, “Ah, thank you.”

However, the apothecary seemed very determined not to look at her. She was a bit puzzled by this, but decided to let it go, instead steering the conversation to something more neutral. “Hollysong mentioned that you are an apothecary. That sounds like very interesting work. Do you enjoy it?”

All of a sudden, Hollysong the Storyteller seems fully absorbed on a tiny little crack in the bark close to his talons. So intent he is on further inspecting it that he slowly takes one step away from the two young sentinels while he preens his flight feathers carelessly, keeping his keen gaze on the small crack all the while. He then touches it with his beak, scrapes the surface with a talon and finally leans over his companion as he whispers something quietly enough that the sound doesn’t quite reach the powerful ears of the other sentinels.

Despite his somewhat detached appearance, the Chestnut’s eartufts twitch as his name is mentioned and there is a wide smile curving the edges of the older sentinel’s beak as well as a pleased glimmer twinkling in the golden eyes. For a moment he entertains the idea of pulling Drywood from the encounter a little sooner than he was intending in order to leave the young couple… my, he was getting ahead of himself… in order to leave the young sentinels wanting more. But no, not this time. Tonight the Storyteller will try to interfere as little as possible when things seem to be going so well.

Willowbreeze thanked him and sounded quite honest about it, but Drywood was too preoccupied with feeling uncomfortably hot to respond in any other way than with a very indistinct mumble, meant to explain that he really didn't know much about song or singing, but was unintelligible enough to be interpreted as anything, really.

Then she asked him about his task, and his ear tufts perked up significantly. Only too happy to find a topic of conversation that he felt truly comfortable in, Drywood couldn’t help but bob his head like an eager fledgling when he smiled up at her and replied:

“Oh, oh yes! I most certainly do! It is incredibly interesting work, really. Most sentinels actually have no idea of just how many different substances there are that affect our bodies, and in so very many different ways, too: there are poisons that shut down your lungs and heart, and poisons that shut down your senses, poisons that make you slow and disoriented and venoms that actually destroy the living flesh! Nature is a remarkable craftsman, and as an Apothecary, I get to witness and figure out some of its most delicate handiwork. Even antidotes and remedies are creations of art, where the slightest imbalance in dosage could do more harm than good-“ He pulled in a deep, quick breath and looked deep into Willowbreeze’s eyes, wishing with all his heart to convey how important a point this was to him, and hoping fervently that she could somehow grasp its enormous implications – without judging him a madbird for it, like others so often did: “But I firmly believe that even poisons or venoms, in the right dosage, could potentially do more good than harm, as well. This is the basis of all my research.”

He had quickly become so swept away by his own enthusiasm for the Task that he loved, that he had for a moment completely forgotten who he was talking to, only that he really wanted to impress her.

The bard puffed a little sigh of relief when Drywood's ear tufts returned to the upright position. Ah, at least this was a topic he felt secure in. Although she knew very little of Apothecary work, she was genuinely interested in his response, even leaning towards him a little, her own tufts perking with interest.

Willow was more than a little taken aback by the recitation of several quite dreadful ways one might die from poisons. The words could almost be construed as threatening, although the tone was anything but. She recoiled almost imperceptibly for a moment, then stopped to consider his last few words. “So... you study the substances that do harm... to find ways to make them useful and good?”

This sounded like a reasonable plan, now that she looked at it from a practical light. After all, a lot of a good thing could often be harmful; Why couldn't a little bit of a bad thing be beneficial? Her heart softened towards the male who was regarding her so earnestly. At the least, he was truly passionate about his task. If we was capable of such ardor in one area of his life, then why not others? It could be that he shared, at least in part, the flames of impractical passion within her own soul.

Willowbreeze was momentarily unsure if she was giving the Chestnut and his unconventional work the benefit of the doubt, or merely deluding herself in her great desire to make this relationship, however improbable, work out.

“How fascinating!”

“Yes, Drywood’s work is very interesting indeed.” Hollysong joined in suddenly. “A pioneer, some say.”

Drywood had complimented her voice and she had shown interest in his task. Even if they didn’t quite realize it, they were both playing this game rather well. But Hollysong had a feeling they shouldn’t dwell on the younger Chestnut’s task for too long and it would be best if Willowbreeze became slowly acquainted with the details of poison testing after the apothecary grew on her. And there was still something to be said about that inopportune companion of his… if all went well, maybe he could still persuade Drywood to get rid of it. Either that or he’d have to arrange for a responsible Brooder to assist the couple.

“Willow dear, I don’t think I’ve ever heard about your territory. I had the pleasure of meeting Drywood at his (a lovely place near the great western open you should really see it!) but I only met you at your grandmother’s. Is it far from here?” the Storyteller’s isn’t exactly expecting anyone to be taken by the obviously fake innocence of his question but he still pulls out his most pleasant “I’m-just-a-cheeky-old-bird” smile nonetheless.

Drywood felt strange again, but this time it was a strangeness that he rather liked. He was actually quite happy to see the Storyteller step in and carry on the conversation, because he found himself quite unable to speak for a while.

He knew that he was happy, but "happy" usually didn't come with this immense swelling of the chest, this tingle under his skin. Was it possible that he had managed to discover a whole new kind of "happy"? If so, then it was so big that it was almost, but not quite, uncomfortable.

Hollysong was talking, but even though he knew that it was rude, Drywood could not shift his gaze from Willowbreeze to the Storyteller. Somehow, she suddenly seemed to be glowing in his eyes. She had understood.

A very lovely lady indeed.

Then he realized that he hadn't heard a word of what Hollysong had just said. He sent a quick glance over at the elder bird and found that he was looking at Willowbreeze. Deciding not to take any risks with his voice, he gladly let his eyes drift back to rest on his mate-to-be.

That concept didn't seem quite so frightening, anymore.

She turned towards the sound of Holly's voice, nodding as she aknowledged his words. "Very interesting." She repeated, looking at Drywood with obvious approval. He wasn't a large male, but he looked healthy and strong, and still had the size advantage over her petite frame. Yes, she could mate with him. He was not old, ugly or dull, as she feared he might be.

In fact... he seemed quite an acceptable mate. Suddenly aware that the Storyteller had asked her a question, Willowbreeze forced herself to focus.

"My territory is just a few minutes' flight from my grandmother's. It's rather nice, with a comfortable oak tree in the center. Not large, but in the fall the acorns bring lots of tasty little creatures around." She bowed her head slightly to the older Sentinel, "Of course, you are welcome to see it at any time. I'd be honored by your visit."

Willow's golden eyes drifted back to Drywood, who had become rather quiet. He was looking at her intently, but not in a way that made her uncomfortable-- if anything, he was looking at her with a sort of appreciation which made her feel faintly warm and pleasantly flustered.

“Oh lovely, it’s not too far from here.” Hollysong said widening his smile. “Soon, I will pay a visit to your grandmother so I could take a little detour just to say hello. After all, I wouldn’t pass on an opportunity to see you, dear. I daresay you are looking rather stunning tonight, your feathers are in perfect condition.”

Oh, wait… there was something there, wasn’t it? The way their eyes were meeting in a surprisingly comfortable silence, a quiet attraction perhaps? There didn’t seem to be any need to praise the lovely girl any further – even if was being sincere - as Drywood seemed to be quite taken by her already. And Willow, even if showing more confidence and ease, also seemed rather pleased with Hollysong’s choice. Good, good! Everything was going according to plan (if not better). Now let’s see, he couldn’t let them lose the momentum. Tasks, check. Female’s appearance, check. Companions… perhaps later. It was a shame they didn’t seem to have any obvious common interests. Oh well, no need to be greedy. Territories, check. Families… not much in common but worth mentioning anyway.

“Well, it must’ve been nice to grow up with a caring family like yours, Willow. Drywood here was minder raised. Not that it seems to have affected him negatively in any way, obviously. Creating such professional and responsible adults says a lot about the quality of the Clan’s Minders.” Hollysong said softly looking away from the younger sentinels for few moments before his eyes finally returned to the younger Chestnut. “In fact, Drywood has already started to give his knowledge back to the Clan. He had one apprentice under his wings which is proof of his excellence as an Apothecary.”

See, Willow… A clever lad. Polite and agreeable. A good provider. Someone who has already been responsible for the education of a younger sentinel. The perfect mate really…

Drywood puffed up a little at the praise. "Well," he added, bobbing his head slightly at Willowbreeze, "She wasn't only my apprentice. Very clever and enterprising girl, she made sure to learn from many of us." He cleared his throat and frowned inwardly for a moment. He felt as though he was supposed to do something, at this point. Something about being polite...

Oh right! Just like Hollysong had already done, he needed to talk about HER a bit. He could almost hear the voices of his old Teachers in the back of his head, scolding him for his self-centeredness.

"Ahem, and how about yourself, Miss Willowbreeze? You are obviously a competent entertainer-" he glanced around, remembering the sounds of appreciation that had followed her performance, "-But do you... appreciate your Task?"

Considering that she had asked him about his task, and how pleased he had been to answer, he deemed it perfectly safe to return the favor.

"Hm," Willow agreed, "She sounds delightful. Perhaps I'll have the pleasure of meeting her some night."

The bard smiled as Drywood asked her about her task. "Oh, I do, very much. I find it very rewarding to entertain, but also to pass on the lore and history of the Clan. I am not such as expert as Hollysong," She nodded deferentially to the older Sentinel, "But there is wisdom in the old songs and stories that should not be forgotten."

Her eyes were bright, her expression animated as she spoke of the profession she dearly loved.

“Ah yes, though my interests have generally taken me in a different direction, it is very important that the old songs and stories are not forgotten. And passing them down in a way that the younger generations find captivating is a great responsibility… and you seem to have the skills to embrace that duty.” Hollysong nodded back to the young female, pleased by the reverence she showed him.

“And speaking of entertaining… Willow dear, will you be performing again tonight?” It was about time to cut the little experience short, the Storyteller thought to himself as he analyzed the young sentinels’ posture and attitude. Before the word “Serpe” got thrown in by accident. Before the details of Drywood’s work were revealed. He needed to separate the two, to leave space for a bit of wondering, dreaming, longing… these were young sentinels after all. He couldn’t really pull Drywood away from the encounter without a reasonable explanation, but he could start dropping a few hints here and there.

Drywood tilted his head slightly to the side, but nodded and smiled quite genuinely as he observed Willowbreeze's eyes light up. He didn't have much knowledge of the Bardic tasks, himself, but he could tell that she was dedicated to her job, and he could respect that. He was glad to hear Hollysong verify his deduction, and decided that rather than to try to keep the conversation going - which would inevitably lead to his revealing of his own ignorance in the matter - take the opportunity to learn a little bit more through observing. If possible.

"Ah, yes," he tagged onto Hollysong's last comment. "I would love to hear another song. In it's entirety." Then he realized that he didn't know how much she had already been performing. She might be tired, or the time might not be right...

"...Sometime." He added, smiling in a way that he hoped didn't put any stress on her to perform on the spot.

"Oh!" Willowbreeze replied to Holly, a bit flustered. "I'm afraid that I am so charmed by your company that I had completly forgotten! I promised one of the little ones that I'd tell the story of how Noctus made the forest."

She nodded to both the males, although Drywood was favored with a shy smile as well. "I should go. Thank you both for your visit, I hope we will soon meet again. Please stop by any time-- In fact, I will be performing with the bard Fjord at the crownleaf theatre on the next full moon, if you wish to attend."
PostPosted: Wed Aug 05, 2009 2:41 pm

Oh, this was absolutely perfect! A pleasant little chat, a good deal of information exchanged and now a swift goodbye without any sort of awkwardness to hinder the… couple. Ho, ho. Could Hollysong really ask for better?

“It’s quite alright, dear! Unfortunately, my dealings also prevent me from enjoying your company any longer. And I’m sure Mr. Drywood also needs to get back to his work. I thank you for the lovely performance and the pleasant conversation.” The Storyteller bowed deeply, unable to fully hide his satisfaction. “Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be other opportunities. Don’t leave the little ones waiting, dear. Willowbreeze, Drywood… until the next time we meet.“

It was official. From every possible perspective, Hollysong believed Drywood and Willowbreeze were a perfect match. He couldn’t imagine a better find for the aberrant girl and to see the two of them getting along so well when they had only just met only served to confirm his feeling that the two young sentinels belonged together.

The Storyteller turned on the branch and moved closer to his companion, determined to let the apothecary say goodbye to the young lady in private and preened his flight feathers as he waited for Willow to depart first.

Drywood was also pleased. Pleased to have found Willowbreeze such a charming and understanding lady, pleased to apparently have performed accordng to Hollysong's expectations and, though it might perhaps not be considered a good thing, he was also pleased to be leaving before the conversaton had gone on for too long. The briefer the exchange, the less the risk of saying or doing something inappropriate.

He exhaled inwardly as the Storyteller bid Willowbreeze good bye, waiting politely for his turn to speak. When it arrived, however, the words he had been preparing inside his head suddenly evaporated the moment that he opened his beak, and he had to buy time by clearing his throat, in order to recapture them.

"It has been a pleasure meeting you, Miss Willowbreeze. I enjoyed speaking with you. I will certainly be looking forward to seeing you perform - Crownleaf Theatre, next full moon, was it? I shall be there."

He hesitated for a moment, and then felt himself grow warmer again as he added in a quieter voice: "I, um... I hope you will sing a song with a happy end."
