"Wrong," Kaosu amended flatly. Uzi's words reminded him of a cocky, new recruit. "Yes, skill will help tip the odds in your favor, but luck will always trump skill in the end. There is no such thing as a perfect Hunter. No matter how hard you practice -how much you improve- there will always be an enemy out there who is capable of crushing you."
What emotion was the feline displaying? Arrogance? No, not quite. Pride. Pride was a dangerous sentiment. "Learning to run is just as important as learning to fight. Otherwise, you'll only get yourself killed."

Uzi didn't want to run, the hunter wanted to face any challenge that came it's way. Still Kaosu had killed it's kind before and probably knew better what limits an essentic could reach. The proto was torn between believing in itself and believing the demon who had experience in this area. Once again Uzi began to pace, tail flicking in agitation behind the tawny coloured lion. Uzi did not want to die and though the essentic now had reservations about Eli there were still bonded and Uzi.. hoped? The human would feel distress if the connection was lost. The essentic shook it's head and growled, so much to think about.
Uzi had no words right now just thoughts and none of them helpful, maybe it should go and be alone. Perhaps Uzi needed to figured these things out on it's own.

"Conflicted little thing, aren't we?" Kaosu observed, watching the feline pace with mild interest. He almost felt a pang of guilt for confusing the poor creature, but he had not said anything that was not true. Still, he could not resist adding in, "I would not worry about it too much. This whole discussion was theoretical. We don't know that there will be a second Hunt. We don't know what Banning is planning. Besides, half of the experienced Hunters from forty years ago are dead."
There really were a lot of unknown factors surrounding Essentics, weren't there?

Uzi paused and nodded slowly " Still important to think about." Looking around the essentic's eyes picked up the thermal signatures of several small felines lurking nearby " Why do you keep cats?" A sudden change of subject perhaps but it was a question the proto actually wanted an answer to. Perhaps by understanding the other inhabitants of Drente Uzi could better itself and find the answers to it's many questions.

"I won't argue with you there," Kaosu replied somewhat absently. The Essentic was right. He needed to do some thinking, too. Suppose chaos did break loose again? How would he respond? Which side would he choose? Would he even get involved? Sighing, he decided that he really needed to talk to Banning. He had a sneaking suspicion that the busy noble could answer those questions.
Raising a brow when Uzi suddenly changed the topic, he added, "I don't know why I collect felines. People like me are prone to do irrational things. I suppose... those strays... I feel a kinship with them. I can't seem to abandon them to the city. So I bring them here and teach them to take care of themselves."

Hmm he was hoarder then, possibly crazy, did this mean his opinions were biased, should Uzi consider the things he said less valuable? On the other hand he was caring for the creatures not just collecting them and hoping they could care for themselves. These people, human, demon and other, they were all so very complicated. Perhaps it was this complication that made them and their luck so dangerous. The idea disturbed Uzi though the essentic had never thought of Eli as particularly complicated.
" You are not the same species, how can there be kinship?" Kin were family and family was blood.. or marriage. Cats and humans could share neither. Uzi shared essense with other essentics but felt no particular bond with them other than the ability to detect them.

"It's... complicated," Kaosu began, unaware that he was only reaffirming Uzi's suspicions about humanity in general. Why did he care for the cats? He surely did not collect them like an old lady. He never named a single one. He did not particularly love them. All he did was pluck them out of crisis and help them survive. That sounded more like an innate desire to preserve life than a feline fetish.
"We are not the same species, no. But we have things in common. Cats are solitary. So am I. Cats are predators. So am I. Cats can survive on little to nothing. So can I. All of these cats were abandoned-" he cut himself off, a chilly thought pervading his system. If there could be kinship between different species, would that also justify kinship with Essentics? This line of thought was dangerous. He needed to change the subject.
"I think it's more that I can't let them die."

" How can you be solitary and yet all live together? Were you abandoned?" More questions, more things to think about, Uzi finally topped pacing and lay down restint it's masked face upon large paws. How strange human's were, the more they answered questions the more there was to wonder about them. Was it becuase they had souls and different purposes then essentics, Were they better for this difference or worse?

"You can live in the same territory without living together. Trust me, this warehouse is a big place," Kaosu offered, shrugging. He had been more so referring to feline behavior in general, not just the cats living in his ruins. Her second question gave him more trouble. No, technically he had not been abandoned, but it certainly had felt that way. That Essentic... she had abandoned him effectively enough. Failing him when he had needed her the most.
"Abandoned? I don't know. Human emotions are hard to understand, even my own."

" Did someone leave you alone, is that why you are alone" Uzi didn't understand the concept of abandonment as an emotional issues or a physical term. The essentic was smart in some ways and caught on to many new ideas enough to deliberate over them and how they effected it directly. Still, some things were beyond Uzi ability or willingness to understand. At least the conversation had turned to Kaosu now leaving Uzi more time between his answers to think about things. Perhaps if there was time later the proto would see if Eli could help answer some questions, the ones least likely to cause concern between them.

"No," Kaosu laughed weakly. "Not someone. And technically, I abandoned her. Left her to die." Why was he answering this random Essentic honestly? It was not like the silly thing could understand his situation, anyways. He would probably only confuse the poor feline even more. Oh well, she was asking for it. Curiosity kill the cat.
"I am alone because I prefer to be alone. I'm not exactly a social creature." There we go. That was the logical response to the personal inquiry. He should have skipped the truth and simply replied curtly. He needed to learn to edit himself.

" Who was she that she was less important than the cats you save?" Uzi was confused now, mind racing to try and guess just what Kaosu meant and not liking any of the possibilities that came up. The lion like proto extended and retraced razor sharp claws again in irritation. Why couldn't humans just be simple and state facts?
" You were social the other night even if you spoke mostly lies" Was Kaosu being falsely social now as well or was he hinting that the essentic had overstayed her welcome.

Less important than the cats you save. The statement sent a sickening twist through Kaosu's gut. Kaji had be a thousand times more important than his pets. That was exactly why her betrayal had left such a deep scar. "An Essentic. A tool," he managed to answer, trying and failing to make it sound as he had abandoned her because of her species as he usually pretended.
He scoffed when she mentioned his lies, glad for a change of subject, "Not necessarily. I was only chatting to get a feel for your owner's character. To see if he would make suitable prey."

" Why did you leave her to die" Uzi's voice had suddenly become montone again. Was this what happened when human's no longer cared for their essentics in any fashion or found them useless, they left them to die? Uzi could not see itself ever being useless to Eli and thus there was no need for abandonment. However humans were complex creatures perhaps there were other factors that could lead to such a thing happening
Uzi snarled and bared it's fangs at Kaosu all thoughts of betrayal erased at the mere mention of harm towards it's bonded " I will kill you before you dare harm Eli. Whether it was genuine care for the man or simply and understanding that without him Uzi was purposeless and likely dead the essentic would fight to protect Eli from any threat regardless of the odds not being in it's favour.

"Because she left my brother to die. It was a fair trade," Kaosu said despite himself. He should have lied again. Quickly correcting this error, he added, "She outlived her purpose. I didn't need her anymore. Why should I keep around a broken tool I don't need?" There we go. That was the right answer. His contradictions and inconsistency would probably confuse the Essentic, but he did not want to get confused himself.
When Uzi recoiled, snarling, he merely shook his head. "You can relax. A smart hunter knows to avoid dangerous prey when it does not have to fight. I won't bother him unless I'm desperate. And I'll be dead before I'm desperate." Yeesh, kids these days. So easy to provoke.
