War on Mars, and Istvaan more so for Mars though. I'm still wondering about stuff since reading Legion, that prophecy is canon if the books are 100% canon, so wow Alpha Legion joined in and still lost, but I have to say my most favorite primarch is actually the twin primarches Alpharius and Omega, mainly Alpharius.

A good battle is the opening invasion of Terra in the first book, best summed with the following quote:

Is there any major source of fluff that's not based in the Horus Heresy novels for this time period?

DarkElf27 Is there any major source of fluff that's not based in the Horus Heresy novels for this time period? Why? The novels are canon. The only other source is a massive $80 book called Collected Visions of the Horus Heresy, written by Alan Merret, the head guy in charge of the background of 40k. And that book is used as a guideline for the novels.

GW is finally giving a complete report of the event, one step at the time, what more could one ask for? The blanks are slowly filled in and at long last fan theory and speculation can be put to death.

Speculation has led to some of the most horrible theories that people pass off as official canon: such as Horus being on the Golden Throne, a daemon council ruling over Ultramar and Cypher being Luther.

Intellectual Property. Alan Merrett is the man people see about 40k background, be it new or old. If something new is to be brought in he decides whether or not it will be official or not. He's also the main presence behind the Horus Heresy projects.

I have a really pesky Horus Heresy related question. In your opinion, what happened to the two missing Primarchs?
