"I wouldn't object to it, my dear." Paradox said suavely, flashing her a slow wink. "And yes, the falls are quite beautiful...and so are you." Paradox almost grinned. He was playing his part so well....but part of him felt guilty for treating her like this. The part that screamed at him that she was more than a pawn.

He shrugged those feeling off, turning his mind back to the game. To the chase that exhilarated him and gave him the same sort of predatory thrill as hunting did. "Then we will fly no faster than this. I wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable...and I certainly wouldn't like to see such a lovely sparrow plummet toward the ground."

When the wind died, Paradox's wings merely billowed out, the leathery skin acting like a form of balloon to keep him aloft. When Mei fell, he dove after her mere seconds after she fell. It would not do for all his work to go to waste. He would not allow it to fail, for it to end like this.

He watched her fall into the water, thankful she didn't fall closer to the falls. He dove in after her, the impact of the water hitting him like a wall, sending the tingling pricking feeling of a thousand needles against his skin all over his body. Momentarily dazed by the shock of a full-speed dive into the lake, he floated for a bit, then took off swimming after her, using his large wings as paddles to boost him along. He swam under Mei's falling body, cradling her with his back as he started pushing towards the surface.

Struggling to reach the surface, his body screaming for air, Paradox heaved with his wings and hooves, all his energy devoted to making it out of the lake.

He barely made it. He was not a good swimmer, by nature he was best in the air. As he broke through, he gulped in the air, his chest heaving in exhaustion. But he wasn't through yet. He paddled to the edge, dragging Mei out of the lake.

Shaking water out of his mane, he nudged the young mare. "Are you alright, Mei?"

He... was rather... bold, she decided. A pretty blush painted her face at his comment. Her? Beautiful? No, that couldn't be right. But he'd said it. Right at her. And she'd most definitely heard him... of course, the last thing on her mind as she was plummeting full force before smashing into the water was trying to stay aloft--not to mention how clumsy she must've looked, with all the effort that was. At any rate, she was slowly losing consciousness, the power of her fall into the water having felt like she's smashed into a rock wall at full speed.

Before her eyes fully closed she remembered seeing a shape--was that Paradox? Was he coming to her rescue? And she blacked out, lack of oxygen getting to her, her feathery wings weighing her body down, pulling her faster, deeper, into the water. Suddenly, as air reached her lungs, she opened her eyes with a large gasp, coughing up water as she did so, somewhat choking on it all the while. "P... P-Paradox?" she gasped out, mentally panicking. She wasn't hallucinating, was she!? She was alive!?

Struggling to her hooves, Mei Xiu shivered: the water was quite cold, now she thought about it. "Ah... I'm... sorry," she said, feeling troubled. "I hadn't meant... and you... ah... thank you," she sputtered, highly embarrassed. If there was one thing she was especially good at, it was getting into trouble... not to mention, she didn't know how to swim. She was so used to traveling about on either hoof or wing, it was a startling revelation to understand she had been near death.

That kind of adventure wasn't what she was looking for... near death... how frightening. All she had seen were images going through her mind, but surprisingly--especially for her--for some reason, Paradox's image was the most clear. "I'm... so sorry, Paradox," she apologized again. "I never expected... and I don't even... ah," she stopped herself once more. She was stuttering. "Paradox, thank you, again. I don't know how to swim... so that was... a shock." And she was also surprised he bothered to save her. She figured he'd be laughing at her, considering the situation and who he was... sort of.

Paradox shook himself again, ridding his coat of more water. He flapped his large wings, drying them to the point where he could fly again, if need be. "Don't apologize," he said, turning his face away from her. "I'm just glad I could get to you in time." Paradox folding one slightly damp wing across Mei's shoulders. "I hope you don't think I'm being too forward...but you should get warm. The lake water is from pure glacier melt...and it is quite cold. You wouldn't want to catch hypothermia, would you?"

She was quite a troublesome little thing, what with almost drowning herself like that. Paradox sighed, wondering if his "sparrow" would prove more trouble than she was worth. But she trusted him, thus proving his father wrong. So he would put up with whatever amount of trouble she brought. He smiled at her, gently pulling her along with him to a warm patch of sunlight through the trees. "Is that better? Are you warm enough?"

Paradox wanted to see how far he could go. Would she learn to love the face others feared? Or at the very least, tolerate it? Paradox wanted to know if it was true. If the 'normals' couldn't associate with Soquili like him. If they truly couldn't care for the monsters in their midst.

Her face was bright red like a cherry, she knew it. When Paradox wrapped his wing around her... why was he stirring such strange feelings? She didn't recognize these feelings. Her heart was beating faster than when she was racing against the wind, or when she was out playing with her mother and father. This excitement... it was different. She knew it, but she didn't know where to place it. And... he had just saved her life. He... was definitely not your normal predator... and she didn't mind that he was so close to her... "...Uh, w-what's h-hypothermia...?" Ugh, her voice was shaking... cold? She knew she felt a little embarrassed, at least.

"I-I'm, a-ah, v-very w-warm, thank you, Paradox," she said, unconsciously moving closer. His body temperature was surprisingly very warm despite the freezing water they'd both landed in. And, the waterfall was beautiful... it was enchanting, especially in the spot Paradox had taken her. "...It's so pretty..." she whispered as she lay down, Paradox's wings warming her faster. She prayed he didn't feel her heart hammering against her chest... why was her heart beating so fast!? She knew her face was still red, and she hoped he concluded it was due to a small fever, or something. Maybe that's what it was... but why would she feel so shy, suddenly?

"I... Paradox," she started, and then stopped, unsure of what to say. She didn't want to be rude, but she had to know. "...Paradox, I... Why did you save me?" she finally asked, a confused expression replacing her shy, embarrassed one. "I... would what happened... I'm surprised you didn't laugh, you see. Most of the ones I've met... well, then again..." She mumbled something about "kalonas" and "Blackfire" for a bit, and then sighed, figuring it was better to just do things on impulse. As such, she leaned against him. It was so very comfortable... and she knew he wasn't going to kill and eat her. If he did, she wouldn't mind. It would be her way of thanking him... because she didn't know how to repay him in any other way.

"Well, I... am very glad you didn't... laugh," she whispered, smilling contently. "You're so kind... I'm glad I decided to get to know you." Why did she feel so happy... and yet sad? These feelings Paradox was stirring within her, they were so foreign. Mei Xiu decided it was better to ask her mother or a few of her friends once she parted with Paradox. Only, why did the thought of leaving Paradox hurt so much?

"Hypothermia, my dear...well, it's something that happens to you when you get too cold. And since that water is close to freezing...well, you catch my drift. I'm used to it, so I'll be fine. I do live here, after all." He was almost worried for her, but she hadn't been in the lake long enough to be in any real danger. She would be warm enough in a moment. Although her high heart rate was a bit of a concern, though he had his suspicions about its cause. He could see her heart beating, pumping it's way through a vein in her neck. He sighed. As always, his Kalona blood asserted itself when it wasn't wanted.

Paradox pulled her closer, feeling her snuggle into his side. Another twinge of guilt pierced his heart. How could he do this to her? If it wasn't genuine affection, then how could he even begin to imagine that it could disprove his father? But that would require that he fall in love as well. Paradox's icy heart froze over once more. That wasn't possible. Although...he found he harbored almost fond feelings towards Mei. Perhaps they could be friends, after all.

He nearly scoffed. Friends? Would she want to be friends if she knew that he had been playing her? No...best stick to the plan. Emotions were flaws, he knew that.

He was pulled out of his reverie by the sound of her voice, uncertain for some reason, as she asked him why he saved her. "Why would I laugh at you?" he asked, a puzzled expression on his face. "You could have died, Mei," he said softly. "So, tell me, why would anyone find that funny?" His eyes softened a bit when he heard her mumblings. She thought he was like the other Kalona she'd met. But was he really all that different? He played her for a fool, manipulating her emotions, taking advantage of her in nearly every aspect of the phrase. Was that any less monstrous than the others?

He shook his head. Nonsense. He was conducting an experiment. There was nothing wrong with that. Best to put those silly notions out of his head at once.

"My dear, I would never laugh at you," Paradox murmured thoughtfully, nuzzling his nose in her mane. "How could I mock such an exquisite jewel?" He paused, thinking on her words. "I am...glad I got to know you too, Mei." It was true, he was glad he knew her. Glad that he was able to disprove his father, to realize that he wasn't bound by his father's views.

"At any rate...you aren't in any shape to go anywhere for a while, not after the ordeal you just went through. You know, I have a quite cozy hollow in the forest. If you wished, you could join me there tonight, and I could keep away the chill of the night." He realized she could take his statement in two different ways. He chose to allow her to interpret it. He really didn't mind whichever she chose. He had wanted to see how far he could go, after all.

He pulled her closer still, a familiar ache winding it's way through his heart. "You thought I was a monster once, not even hours ago. What changed your mind?" He wasn't quite vulnerable, but he was close enough to it to be anxious towards her response. What did she think of him?

PostPosted: Sun Jan 03, 2010 12:33 pm

"So that's what is hypothermia... you know a lot, Doxy," she commented, accidentally nicknaming him without a thought. She snuggled closer. He was so, so warm. He was emitting such a protective aura... she felt so comfortable. He probably wasn't planning to kill her... after all, why kill her if he just rescued her from death mere moments before? Such a thing was odd... but well, Mei Xiu didn't know too much about how Kalonas thought, let alone those who were partial by blood. Well... there was one such Soquili she knew who might have gone through similar sufferings Paradox had gone through.

"Yes, actually," she replied in a quiet voice. "Once, I tripped and fell into a river... I was playing with some friends at the time, and..." the sentence faded away as her eyes widened in shock. She had forgotten about that... because it had been one of the most terrible memories on her foalhood. The laughter of the other foals as she had fallen into the swift-moving, deep river, as she drowned and... Mei shut her eyes, and then smiled happily as Paradox invited her. "Seriously, Doxy, complimenting me won't get you anywhere," she teased. Then she stared at him as he invited her to be with him for the night. A brilliant smile painted her face at that point. "I'd love to, Paradox! Thank you!"

As he pulled her closer, her heart beat even faster. She hoped he didn't notice. At his question, she considered. Should she be truthful? Should she lie? But Mei Xiu was never one to lie, and well, she figured, maybe, it would help him feel better if she just was blunt about it. "Doxy, you're not a monster," she started, looking at him hard. "Monsters are those that delight in dancing with the blood and death of others. They are creatures who care nothing for life, who don't think of trying to live." She took a deep breath. "I have a friend who is like you. A Kalona hybrid. She struggles every day to live normally. She isn't a monster... and neither are you. I will say this: I did not think of you as a monster before. I was frightened, as a prey would be to a predator. Is that not just nature?"

Blackfire had shown her the difference between a monster and something that was just natural... and Mei Xiu would never forget it. But this adventure was turning into something more... Mei Xiu was beginning to wonder where this was going to lead her. "But... Doxy? You're different. You're not a monster. You're a predator... but you're also my friend." However, saying that he was a "friend" seemed to make her heart ache. She shivered suddenly. It was getting really cold now. She moved as close as she could to Paradox. He was the only source of warmth at the moment, and she didn't mind too much.

If he was surprised at her use of a nickname, he didn't show it. "I don't know nearly as much as I should," he said. "There's still a lot I don't know." He didn't know what he was going to do about her. He didn't know how long his charade would hold, if she would still consider him a friend after she found out that his intentions were less than pure. He didn't know if his father was right or not. Yes...there was quite a lot that he didn't know.

"Some friends, huh?" he commented, his mind piecing together the gaps between her words. She had been in danger, and her friends had done nothing but laugh. Perhaps they hadn't realized the gravity of the situation, but...more likely than not, they were just being cruel. It was a dark world they lived in, after all.

His eyes met hers as she accepted his offer with innocence and naivety. He nearly smiled. She was so young, so...untainted by the world. He had never had the privilege of being so unblemished. "The pleasure is mine, my dear."

At her next words, his smile fell some. "It is natural, I suppose." He met her gaze, holding it as he spoke. "But creatures such as I, with hidden fangs and eyes of darkness...we were made to tear others to shreds. Perhaps we are of nature's design, but...what is natural can also be monstrous." He attempted a smile. "I am glad you don't find me a monster, though I don't necessarily agree." He kept his voice lighthearted, though he was a touch sullen about the subject. He wasn't a nice Soquili that ate only grass and frolicked with butterflies. He had killed, feasted in the blood of animals, and he did so on a regular basis. Even if she disagreed, he knew that he would always be a monster, if only in his own eyes.

As she started shivering, Paradox's expression softened. "Come on, let's head out. The sun's going down, and the temperature will only keep dropping. It'll be warm back at my place, where the wind can't touch us." He stood carefully, keeping her covered by his wing as he waited for her to stand. She felt so fragile...and he felt ashamed of how he was using her. But as always, he brushed aside his thoughts.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew he was a conflicted soul. He spent half his time trying to embrace his Kalona blood, and the other half rejecting it. He was unstable, but not dangerous. A shame and an asset to his blood. Paradox looked up at the darkening sky. It was nearly twilight, the mix of light and dark. Like him, it was two things at once. He turned back to Mei, wistfulness in his eyes. "You're right you know. Life for those who try to live normally with Kalona blood is a struggle. It is so much easier to submit...but then it's only a struggle in the opposite direction, because Kalona's don't usually acknowledge mutts. Perhaps we aren't monsters in the eyes of others, but we won't ever really fit in either." It was his turn to give her a hard look. "Tell me, do you think you could love someone like us? Could you accept the necessary kills, the fangs that lurk behind a smile? Could you love a face that was forever stained by blood?"

"Tell me, do you think you could love someone like us? Could you accept the necessary kills, the fangs that lurk behind a smile?
Could you love a face that was forever stained by blood?"

His words rang within her mind, and she did not reply right away. What could she tell him? She was used to this question--having heard it in various forms from the mouth of another hybrid like himself--and she could only stare back into his eyes. And then, "Why would it matter, Paradox? Who I love and who I hate--that's up to me. I can choose to love you and I can choose to hate you, and it's the same for everyone." She stopped for a moment, and then gave him a brilliant smile. "Well, since I don't eat meat, it doesn't mean I'm less able to be stained by blood. It's better to just not dwell on it, don't you think?"

She brushed a feathered wing at his side, shaking her head. "You may be only a monster inside your mind, but if you really want to know what a true monster is, perhaps I should introduce you to my good friend--a kalona hybrid like yourself." She thought about how Blackfire struggled day after day after day, trying to maintain that perfect balance between Wind and Kalona. Some days, Blackfire was frightening; though she did not have fangs, her teeth were still more than sharp enough, her skills more than powerful enough. Blackfire would probably get along well with Paradox... and maybe not. Paradox was slightly different: he had dark blood, and holy blood mixed within his body. Blackfire's struggle was a little less, but still... She shook aside her thoughts, nothing wanting to think about it any longer.

"Even if you betray me, or if you're using me," she suddenly spoke, displaying a thoughtful look, "I could not think less of you. If it is the natural order of things, then that's how it will be. I'm not the kind of mare to get worked up over those kinds of things, you know." She was the adventurous type; the type that accepted everything that came at her, and she faced it head on. If the goddess Epona decreed her death, she would accept it; if Epona decreed her life, then she would live; she knew nothing of 'love', but if she had to name what she felt for Paradox, it probably would be...

Huh? Mei Xiu paused in thought, as she looked back at Paradox, staring at his handsome features with nary a blink. ...Is that what this feeling is? The feeling of warmth and loneliness, of heartache and yet support... yes, that's probably what it was. Her mother had often said so. Love... Was she supposed to fall for him like this? She had told him just mere moments ago she could choose to hate or love him... and, it seemed, that she had chosen to love him. She did not think she would regret it, either. She gave him another smile. "Let's get going, Doxy. I'm getting cold, and like you said, it's gonna get colder!"

He blinked. Such spunk she showed, this sun-colored mare. Her touch was light, the feel of feathers on fur, a gentle firmness that prompted him to listen even more carefully than he already was. She spoke of her good friend, the Kalona hybrid, and he realized that not only had she been able to befriend the likes of him before, but she'd been dealing with questions like his for a long time. It was almost amazing how she seemed so determined to encourage him. Most others thought of him as a monster, seeing the Kalona blood and not the struggle behind it. Even though she could never possibly understand what it was like, Paradox was glad that she was trying. If only the rest of the world would try as well. "Apparently it doesn't matter to you, my dear sparrow, but it's been my experience that it matters to many others." Though his words were sad, he smiled at her. "But I agree...it's best not to dwell on it."

He raised an eyebrow at her next words. "You wouldn't think less of me? You speak as if I am not responsible for my actions simply because of what I am." His voice took on a bit of an edge for the first time since he had met Mei. "If I am using you, my dear, I am to blame." It wasn't the "natural order of things" to use someone else. It was a choice, made by an individual...made by him. It was wrong, usually, he knew that. But surely it wasn't wrong for him. After all, this was just an experiment, a way to prove his father wrong. Wasn't it?

He turned away for a moment, his brows furrowed in the guilt he pretended not to notice. When he turned back, he caught her watching him, a strange play of emotions dancing across her face. Confused, he cleared his throat, shuffling his hooves awkwardly. He wondered if he had managed to succeed. If this strange emotion on her face was love, it was completely different than anything he had seen before. His mother loved his father, but Airlia never sported an expression as fragile and sweet as the smile Mei was giving him now.

Composing himself, he flashed her a debonair smile. "Then we'd best get moving. It's not that far from here. The path should be around here somewhere...Aha!" he said, walking a few steps down a shadowy, nearly invisible trail. "Follow me so you don't get lost. This forest is very hard to navigate." Of course it was. He had made it so when he arrived. "This is my forest, Mei...and those lost within it are my prey. Present company excepted, of course."
PostPosted: Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:43 am

She had to laugh. And laugh she did. A pretty, amused kind of laugh... Sparrow? She was a sparrow? She didn't think she wasn't that small--rather, she figured she was still rather much bigger than those flutters--but well, maybe he meant it as a compliment, then. Though she herself was also a hybrid--having a full-blood Wind for a mother and then a hybrid alicorn as a father--she didn't struggle half as difficultly as Paradox and Blackfire. Those two, they had holy and tainted blood within their bodies, so she most certainly couldn't understand what they went through. Still, thanks to Blackfire, she wanted to put in an effort to try. It's better to try than to run off and back away, she thought. She frowned a little at Paradox as she followed him, the evening soon settling its essence in nature.

"But what does it matter what everyone thinks, Paradox?" She really didn't understand. Sure, she had been laughed at, made fun of, and such, but those things... those negative things, it would only make one more miserable by continuously thinking about them. It's how she had managed her life; living to discover adventure, and then adventuring... learning new things, maturing... Her mother had been sad to see her leave, but had allowed it, commenting about how it "would develop her taste for the real world" (whatever that meant). Suddenly, Paradox's frowning expression caught her off guard, and she stared at him with small concern and a lot of confusion. "No, you shouldn't be responsible for you actions just because of what you are," she agreed, feeling slightly put out. "I meant that because of what you are, you shouldn't feel so slighted... um... I don't know how to explain." She paused for a bit, trying to figure out the best words without destroying what little camaraderie they had.

"What I meant, Doxy, is that you should be responsible for who you are, not what you are. You can't change what you are, but you can change who you are. It all depends on how you want to live, and what you want to make of it." She blinked, wondering where that had come from--maybe she had heard that somewhere before...? She knew those kinds of words didn't come from someone such as her, but they were wise words, and while she had been wordy with them, they were essentially the same. She knew she had heard that advice somewhere before... Now she peered at him again, taken aback at the sudden smile he gave her, once again enhancing his gorgeous features. "I don't care if you're using me, Paradox." She spoke to him quietly now. "You... you've become someone dear to me; I feel that I..." she trailed off, unsure how he would take it.

This feeling she felt, she was sure it was love, but she didn't think it was the 'romantic' kind... certainly, it felt different than her 'love' for her other friends and family, but it didn't seem right to put it as 'romantic' either... Yet, in the deepest part of her mind, she knew. "Paradox, I want you to know that you've become very important to me. How it happened that way... I don't know. I guess I probably chose that decision subconsciously!" She giggled lightly, nuzzling his neck on a sudden impulse with a bright smile. She glanced around as the scenery changed, trying not to bump into him as the 'trail' basically disappeared. "Ahaha, I don't think I could lose sight of you, Doxy," she joked, referring to his pale white fur coat. She grinned and fluttered her eyes at him. "Well, if I'm to be prey, at least don't eat me too soon... even if I am exempted from that rule." Why did feel so... flirty? Suddenly, the world crashed within Mei's mind as her eyes widened with the actual realization of her feelings.

"It matters because..." A million images flashed through his mind. His father, rescuing him from the pure-bred Kalona who had attacked him, his mother kneeling over her latest kill...the faces of all the gentler-blooded Soquili who had fled at the first glimpse of him. "Because they will never accept someone like me. I am a mongrel, a monstrous combination of bloodlines that were never meant to cross. It matters because my whole life I have lived knowing that society would rather have me die. What everyone else thinks has shaped my life since the moment I was born. I've learned to live in spite of it, but...as much as I wish it otherwise, what 'they' think will continue to influence my life." It was a hard admittance, but she had asked with such sincerity. She seemed to want to truly understand, the first outsider who had been so concerned about him.

He listened, but made no comment on her next words. What he was entwined itself with who he was. One shaped and molded the other, and there was nothing he could do about that. But...it was a nice thought, that who he was could be separate from what he was. Maybe she was right, but...he wasn't sure. He would have to think on her words. Perhaps he could be more than just a mongrel.

"I'm glad you are fond of me, my dear," he said softly. And he was. He was glad that his father was wrong, that she had accepted him even though he was a formidable predator. But if she were expecting him to reciprocate her emotions...he wasn't sure he could give her that. He had lured her in on purpose, toying with her emotions to influence her into feeling this way. Was it right to encourage her farther?

He blinked at her. He was pale, yes, but he didn't stick out that much...did he? "Perhaps not," he admitted with a light smile, "but I'm fairly decent at disappearing when I need to." He frowned at her flirtatious teasing. She was acting like a filly again, and he didn't understand why she would...it dawned on him that maybe she was more than a little fond of him. Perhaps she really had grown to love him, and he didn't know what to make of that. But he didn't have time to dwell on that. They had reached his home, a humble clearing sheltered by an outcropping of rock. What a mound of rock was doing in the middle of a forest, Paradox had no idea. But it had been the perfect shelter, and so he had turned this place into his resting place.

"Well, this is home." He strode forward, settling down under the sheltering wing of rock. "It's not much, but...I like it well enough."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:14 pm

She glanced around in awe as she took in the simple shelter. It was the perfect place to rest and hide from the world when one got weary of it. While she didn't really understand how a huge mound of rock just happened to be there in the middle of the forest, she figured it was just one of Mother Nature's natural phenomenons, and didn't question it. After all, it was protecting Paradox, and as such, with Paradox there and that shelter, she herself felt very, very safe. "This is a really nice place, Doxy," she commented, smiling warmly at her new friend. Well, I suppose "crush" is the best way to describe him... She supposed it was going to happen at some point; she was glad it was Paradox she was crushing on, and not some other stallion. She wasn't sure why, but she had somehow developed strong feelings for this stallion...

...Well, he was certainly a beauty among stallions, and she knew quite a few stallions, all of whom were pretty handsome themselves. It was at that point that Mei found herself staring at Paradox, and she quickly looked away, trying to hide her embarrassment. She knew he probably picked up on her because of her blushing, but she figured he wouldn't say anything on it... She hoped. "It's really nice here," she tried again, though she was failing utterly. It was so hard trying to make conversation because she suddenly felt quite... awkward. "So, uh, um..." she tried yet again, and then she sighed. "Okay, I'm sorry, Doxy, but I'm feeling awkward and I have no idea what to say. So, um, shall we go in?" She was glancing nervously at their surroundings as it was getting colder and darker and she didn't sit well in utter darkness.

Since she could barely make out the sky as it was Mei Xiu was moving closer to Paradox inch by inch. Paradox was probably the biggest and scariest predator in the area but Mei was terrified of things she couldn't see, or being startled. She felt her wings brush lightly against her new friend/crush, and she froze. "Oops, eheh, sorry about that..." She made an attempt to move further away, but only a short distance of a few... well, inches. She knew she was safe, especially with Paradox there, but still... and she was repeating herself in her thoughts. Ugh. As she was nervous, she gently nudged at the hybrid stallion. "So, what do you like to do in your free time? I bet you get mares all the time--you're definitely gorgeous, you know?" ...She didn't just say that! She didn't! Too late to take it all back now. Mei Xiu mentally groaned.

Paradox led Mei to his home as the sun set behind the clouds and darkness covered the land. His hunting instincts woke with the darkness, and though Mei was in no danger, Paradox was slightly distracted by the subtle increase in sensory perception--every sense became hypersensitive. He could hear her breathing, feel the heat from her body, and see the blush on her face as if the sun still graced the world.

With her coloring, she could be the eternal sunset, the last rays of the sun shining even in the darkest night. But what was this? The sun seemed afraid of the night, her sudden nervousness evidence of her fear. How interesting, this fear of hers. She could bravely stand her ground against a predator, fight her every instinct to run, but paled when blackness cloaked the ground.

"Yes," he said softly, "we shall go in. I know it's dark out now, but you don't have to be afraid, Mei." But maybe she did. He was the most frightening thing in these woods. The forest was tainted with the blood he had spilled. So maybe she should be afraid. But she wasn't. At least, she wasn't afraid of him. When she bumped up against him, he casually pulled her close with the wing still wrapped around her back, his wing a guide and support. "I'm guessing you can't see very well right now," he murmured in her ear, "so allow me to escort you."

He led her into the hollow, a smile she could not see playing across his face at her last question. "You really don't want to know the answer to that first question," he said in a forcibly light tone, "but I don't really have many mare-friends, Mei. I live here alone, and I don't go looking for company. You wandered into my home, remember?" he jested. Truthfully, Paradox generally avoided everyone. Mei was an exception, an experiment.

He had never really been with a mare before, either. Not this way, not in kindness and soft words. Violence and blood, yes. His fangs ached at the memories--the struggle, the fight, the ultimate defeat. And the blood...that delicious, life-giving liquid. He had fed the night before,but...Mei's body pulsed with such heat from her fast-beating heart, that alluring blush on her face...such temptation this mare was. Paradox sighed. He was not used to restraint. "I am not the most gentle of lovers, Mei. That charming blush of yours is enough to make me want to taste the sweet blood in your veins. If you stay...you may find more than you bargained for. But even still...I would like it if you stayed." He ran his nose through her mane, sighing at her scent, inviting and forbidden, his fangs trailing softly across her skin. "And maybe, just maybe, you would too, judging by how fast your heart beats at my touch."

He gently pulled away from her, a longing in his heart for her acceptance even now. It puzzled him, this feeling. She was supposed to be nothing to him, but...more and more she was creeping her way into his cold heart. "The choice is yours, my sparrow."

Mei wasn't sure if she shivered with excitement, shyness, or embarrassment, but she knew it had to be one of those emotions, considering how... touchy-feely... Paradox was being. She was also nervous because she had realized she was crushing (rather heavily) on him, and he was only encouraging her. She also realized she was past caring if he was using her or not. She cared too deeply about him to judge him based on that simple thing, and it wasn't as if... well, perhaps, she was just a little afraid.

"Doxy..." her voice came out as a whisper as she looked into his haunting gaze. He was so different now that night had fallen, but still, Mei was more frightened of darkness than she was of Paradox. She didn't know why or how, but she just knew that she couldn't be scared of Paradox. Even if he chose to eat her... she'd welcome it, if only because he'd be showing her some form of affection and attention. ...Maybe I'm a little twisted, too...

"With you here, Doxy, I'm not scared," she finished her whisper, drawn even closer to the stallion. Now it was warmer after they had walked into his home, but Mei still felt "cold," so she pushed herself ever closer to Paradox. Something in her--instinctively--told her to get closer. She had to. She must. But Mei Xiu wasn't sure what spurred her actions on in this course. She shivered again when Paradox murmured his offer of guidance, and Mei was compelled to obey.

It wasn't a matter of choice--she had to. She wouldn't have said "no" anyway. When he mentioned the beating of her heart, Mei inflamed a nice, bright apple red on her face; redder than it already felt, as it were. Paradox was inciting some incredibly different feelings within her, as well as her body, but Mei Xiu didn't want to think too hard. She was far too enchanted with this night-time Paradox.

"...I'll stay with you."

As if she could have made a different choice. Mei Xiu was caught deeply within Paradox's spell, and deep in her heart, she didn't want to escape.

Could spells ensnare the caster?

Paradox was as deeply ensnared as Mei was, his Kalona instincts running rampant through his blood, tempered only by his ironclad decision not to kill this sunset-colored mare. As she blushed even more fiercely, his bloodlust, already awakened, caught in the back of his throat, making him gasp.

"Maybe you should be scared," he said, his voice strained. His eyes displaying the reddish ring of bloodlust, a family characteristic, he waited out the agonizing seconds for her escape or surrender.

As she made her decision, he reached out and pulled her close again. "Oh, Mei...I had hoped you would say that," he whispered darkly, burying his nose in the soft flesh of her neck. "Forgive me," he murmured, his voice muffled by her fur. Then, he gave into the burning ache within him and sank his tiny fangs into her soft skin, drowning himself in the taste of her blood, the forbidden wine of this spirited mare.

This was not what he had planned when he had met Mei, but he couldn't say he wasn't pleased with how the night was unfolding. He pulled back before he bled her dry, resting his velvet nose on her neck, licking at her puncture wounds to stop the bleeding--and maybe also to savor the last few drops of crimson ambrosia.

Bloodlust sated, he curled up against her side, a wing across her back. "I suppose it's only fair to allow you whatever liberties you'd have with me after that display," he said softly, tracing the contours of her muzzle with a wing tip.
