Anger had subsided to pain as she stayed silent. Palladia stared at Matilda, starting to stroke her hair again. Stupid, stupid fool. Why did these things happen to her? What had she done wrong? She couldn't be angry anymore, it was just useless. Taking a deep breath she turned to face Aubrey her eyes downcast, "...I-I want you to accept her. I want you to love her as a father should. I know I'm contradicting myself, but I just don't want her to grow up with a father who doesn't care for her." Palladia stopped, sounding weary, "I don't care if you hate me, but don't hate your only daughter. That's the only favor I'm asking you for." There. She said it.
She continued on, "I honestly wished to kill myself when I found out that I was with child. I really did. I hated myself more than I hated you. But..." Palladia trailed off, her eyes still on the ground.
Matilda took her other hand, placing it on top of Aubrey's, and pulled at his fingers. He had such big hands! She started to nibble on his fingers wondering what they tasted like.
"...Would you like to hold her?"

Aubrey's eyes were locked on Matilda as she nibbled his fingers while he listened to Palladia. Her sudden change in personality was curious, and though it made him no less angry with her, he was able to soften his voice. "So you know, my thoughts on you have not changed in the slightest. However, my feelings for you have little to do with- our- daughter. Me loving her does not require a favor, as long as you give me the chance to love her. I want her to know I'm here for her as long as she needs."
Taking a deep breath of his own to relieve his tight muscles, and to give himself another moment to simply watch the baby, he nodded. "I would." Finally releasing the grip on her arm, he slowly stretched it out to join his other hand, every move presice and careful as if he feared breaking Matilda. Or that Palladia might change her mind if he moved too suddenly like a preyed animal would run from sudden movement.

Matilda whimpered softly, reaching her arms out for her mother. "Mama...?" she stared at Aubrey's face with her innocent eyes, "Mama!" she cried out, flailing her arms and legs. Who was this person? Why was he holding her? Why is Mama letting him hold her?
Palladia restrained herself, "I don't care if you hate me or want me to die. I'm just glad that you actually care for Mattie." she watched her child, sighing as she called out for her. "Try stroking her hair or rub her back. I'm sure she'll calm down." she stepped closer to Aubrey, still protective of her child.

Aubrey froze his arms. Instead of scaring Palladia, he had scared Matilda. He wasn't suprised though, as they had just met a bit ago.
"Oh, Mattie." He whispered, stroking her head gently. "You're momma is right there. I'm not taking you anywhere. We're staying right here." He started rocking gently back and forth without realizing it, still whispering calming noises to her. In his arms, squirming and wriggling, was his daughter. His only child. Palladia may be the mother, but she was only half of this baby.
His shoulders suddenly felt heavy. Would she be able to understand when she was old enough? Could she be able to forgive them for creating her into such a life with seperated parents?
(( I have no idea. It will probably take a looong time, if ever rolleyes ))

Matilda continued to stare at Aubrey, but this time she had stopped squirming. She reached her arms out, this time touching Aubrey's cheeks. With her palms she gently squeezed his face, Aubrey's lips puckering as she did so.
Mattie giggling softly at Aubrey's face and continued to squeeze them together.

Aubrey chuckled, happy that she seemed to calm down. He dropped thoughts of Palladia for the moment and focused and keeping his girl smiling. With his puckered lips he made kissy noises, pursing them together like a fish.

She pressed her palm onto his lips, pushing them against his face, Mattie giggled her kicking wildly.
Palladia took this time to sit down by a tree. Heaving a long sigh as she did so, she continued to wonder how she was going to break this to Riome. She stared blankly at Aubrey and Mattie, her bright green eyes glazing over.

Aubrey puffed out his cheeks, blowing a zurber against the small hand. Shifting his arms so that her kicking would not result in her falling over and out, he ran his fingers of one hand lightly over her side. "Does papa have you?" He asked playfully, gumming her fingers with his lips.
He had refered to himself as papa! A warm feeling crawled up his spine at the thought.

She let out a delighted laugh, pressing her palm repeatedly against his mouth.
"Papa?" Mattie blinked, not understanding the meaning of this new word. "Papa?" she repeated again, her fingers squiriming.

Aubrey nodded as he alternated gumming her fingers and zurbering her palms. "Yes. Papa." His eyes started to shine a bit, imagining the day she would understand the word's meaning and call to him with that title.
Gosh! Why was he thinking of the future already? He brought himself back to the present, only now noticing Palladia had wandered a bit, and looked rather distracted. He only briefly wondered what the pugnacious female was dreaming about before his attention easily refocused on the lovely giggling girl in his arms.

"Papa." she said again. "Papa." whatever the word meant, it sounded similar to 'Mama'. She mimicked the raspberry sound, bits of spittle showering Aubrey's face. She laughed with glee, doing it over and over again.
The green centaur realized thinking it over was just useless. When the time came, she would just have to crawl her way through. Sighing again, she turned to pick some dust off her flank. Noting with digust she realized was still fat from the pregnancy.

Aubrey wiped carefully at his face, placing a finger over Matilda's lips. "You'll have to learn to control that a little better first."
Setting her onto the ground, he kept a hand on her back as the other searched around in his bag. "Here. You wanna see something?" Out of the stuffed bag, he pulled a square of rabbit skin with the fur. He had figure to sell it at the market. He put the furry side to the baby's chest and stroked down her belly. "See? Soft and fluffy."

Mattie's eyes went wide, marveling at the softness of such an object. She cooed, her small hands grasping at his fingers trying to pry them off the rabbit skin. Whatever it was, she wanted it for herself.
Turning around, she watched the father and daughter her eyebrow raised. What were they doing now? Deciding to leave them alone, she stayed quiet, watching them.

Aubrey brushed at her tummy a little more before she tried to grab the fur. Laughing to himself, he released the prize to the girl. He should have seen that coming... Though what experience did he have with babies? The thought sobered him down from his playful high, and he simply smiled warmly as Matilda inspected the fabric.

Mattie inspected the cloth, feeling the soft hair on her tiny fingers. She pushed the cloth onto her face, a muffled giggle came out. The fur was even softer on her face. It was irritating her nose and she let out a small sneeze, accidently dropping the fur.
