Synerda bit her lip, he spoke as though they were his pack. "Some... like them." Though she was really thinking of her uncle describing the early days of contact with men. Tricking them into thinking they were getting rare, magical items when they were really home-made beads and minor trinkets. "The... humans... are outsiders. They came on larger ships than we had ever built, saying words we did not know and with strange customs. Many feel they should have left on those same ships rather than settle our islands."

Baron looked a little upset by that, "I'm glad they didn't...if they hadn't stayed, I'd probably be dead." He looked up, towards the ocean, frowning, "Do they live on the other islands too? The humans? Or do they just live here?" He paused for a moment, "How far away is your island?"

"No, none on Meon Garan," she said quickly to avoid the subject of death. She couldn't stop the twinge of curiosity at what must have happened to his pack, or at least his parents. "Well, this is actually my first stop and I'll be going to one other human settlement and stopping at Draiocht - humans call its inhabitants cattaurs - so in all it'll take a few days. It took one and a half to get here though, it's my first stop." She realized she'd rambled about her shipping schedule for long enough.
She wasn't sure what else to say, though she felt so many questions tumble in her own head. "Have you ever thought about.. trying to find your family?"

One and a half days...that island must be far off. So...how did he get all the way over here, away from his own kind? He looked puzzled, staring down at the grass for a moment, then looking up sharply at her question. "Oh, no...No. Never. Mother, and Uncle George, and Delaine are my family." He smiled weakly, ears lowering, "And I mustn't have been wanted by my taur family if they left me on a completely different island...Finding them never seemed worth it."

Synerda's ears flicked in agitation. "I find it more likely you were taken from your pack. It might not have been the humans, and whoever did it clearly ran afoul of something for you to have been left alone..." She looked out across the town with troubled eyes. Baron's position left her feeling sad and angry at the same time. He should be with his own kind.

Baron looked unsure, "Why would someone take me?" he didn't sound skeptical at all. For all he knew, it was completely possible. He had no idea. He looked towards the ocean again, frowning, drifting into deep thought. When he snapped out of it, he looked to her, and said in an uncertain voice, "How often do you come here..?"

To the first, "I've heard some humans are so enamored by old tales of creatures similar to us that some simply want to 'have' an island-dweller. Sometimes just a friend, sometimes as a pet. Sometimes to raise as their own child..." She left out any of the sinister rumors she'd heard. For one she had no confirmation on any of those, and she didn't want to scare him without reason. Besides, he'd been well treated so far, or least thought he had been. "I'd say about... two to four times a year. Usually with the new season to bring in fresh trade goods. Why?" She felt unsettled by his unsure voice, as though he might question her of something.

He frowned at what she said, but chose not to comment. She seemed like she didn't trust humans, but he didn't want to challenge her opinion. It wasn't necessary. Shifting slightly, he once again looked very unsure, "You're making me...curious. Maybe, if I were to go to visit my own kind...I would need a way across the ocean." He didn't know how often anyone else came here, so she was the only person he could ask.

Synedra was proud of her own restraint that she didn't take him by the hand and run back to the boat that very instant. "I'm certainly not the only trade ship in these waters... though we tend to have the same route. The faster ships don't stray from home much, they're for race and show." She looked away in thought. It wouldn't be fair to push her own desires on him, to make it sound like he simply had to come right now. "My crew and I leave tomorrow..."

Baron looked very unsure at that, "And...if I were to say...go with you....How soon could I be back here?" his voice had gotten quieter, and he sounded very nervous about the whole idea. He didn't want to leave, but...he figured that he should go visit his people, at least once. See what he could learn about them. Even if he was scared, he was also horribly curious.

She had to consider... would she be willing to make a private trip back? Perhaps two or three years ago, before her uncle's health began to fail and ownership of the trading company became a huge question in her family. So... "One season, maybe two. Early winter at the latest." Half a year. Would the humans let him go?

Baron's ear lowered, but he still seemed to be considering it. He stared down at his crossed paws for a moment or two, then looked up slowly, "Will you come with me to my house..? I may need help explaining my leaving to them." He had to know what it was like there.

Synedra flicked one ear, she didn't like the idea of meeting these humans and doubted she could keep her feelings about them from showing. She also didn't like the idea of perhaps trying to convince them to let Baron go. Would they be amenable to it? "If you think it'll help," was all she said.

"Well...it will help me, you can stop me from backing out at the last minute," he said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "You don't need to say anything to them, just...make sure I don't chicken out? I feel like I need to do this, but I'm nervous. Really nervous."

Nodding eagerly, Snyder quickly said, "Yes, I can be there for that." She assumed she'd also have to answer some questions, if the humans had any care for their charge. But to give moral support, she'd suffer through just about anything the humans could throw at her.
