Lakshmi laughed. "I haven't actually tried talking to the waters, but I'm sure they would protect you if they knew how I felt about you." She looked away quickly, a little embarrassed at being so open about this, but hurried on, lest he ask and she really embarrass herself. She managed a smile again. "I don't know if it's my most unusual blessing, but what did you mean by 'aside from?'" The unfinished sentence intrigued her.

Abhyagni's mind skidded over the phrase "if they knew how I felt about you" and left him in shock. No, no, good things of that nature didn't happen to kirin like him. She meant as a friend, as a herd mate. And yet...
He blushed furiously, unsure what to say. Somehow, "you have a lovely neck" didn't seem to quite cut it. "Y-you're kind," he stammered, "and gentle. Everybody likes you. It's a gift, Lakshmi, a gift of yours."

Lakshmi smiled. "I'm sure that there are those out there who will not care for me, and I won't mind that, if you don't...if you don't..." She swallowed, really embarrassed now, and whispered, "If you don't hate me, you know...if you feel the same way about me as I do about you...if you love me." She stood silent for a moment, wishing she could melt into the river for being so forward about her feelings, but it was the truth. It was how she really felt, and she couldn't hide forever.

Down, down through the river and earth went Abhyagni's heart. He stood, stunned, speechless, headless of the water tugging at his feet, splashing on his coat. He was empty, hollow, gone, just a shell anchored to the ground with nothing to hold him there except four simple words.
"I love you too," he said, the words coming to his ears from a very long way way as he soared now, he flew and danced among the clouds and he was the earth, he was the clouds, he was the fire and the water and he was Abhyagni, beloved of Lakshmi.

Lakshmi's heart skipped a beat as Abhyagni said those four short, simple, beautiful words. "R-really?" she asked, startled and overjoyed beyond words. She wanted to dance on the waves like a lotus blossom on winter snowmelt, she wanted to sing like a nightingale, she wanted to laugh her joy to the Goddess herself, and yet...and yet...she was too happy to do any of those things.
A soft laugh broke from her as the fiery joy she'd sheltered deep in her heart at being with Abhyagni burned through the vast sea of her heart, warm, bright and beautiful. Lakshmi smiled and nuzzled Abhyagni, her own beloved Abhyagni, as she felt certain the rising river and the burning blaze in their hearts met and danced together in the joy of loving and being loved back.
