Unguzo laughed, tauntingly, bouncing around like a cub as the other male swung at him. It looked like he was thrown off, one eye closed. It must be a matter of depth perception, or maybe the blow had knocked some sense out of him. Whatever the case, Unguzo was tickled by it.
"How easy it is to get you incapacitated! Can you truly fight me now? You can't even swing enough to get anything more than fur from my body. It's rather pitiful, trying to fight you now."
He looked back at Hitilafu, spotting her and growling. She was supposed to be back in the den. But she was watching, looking horrified. Unguzo felt a strange feeling in his chest that he had never felt before. Ignoring it, he turned back to Alastair.
"I'll give you one chance to leave with your life."

Alastair's ears rang loudly in his head, but he heard the last call of hope reach his ears. He opened his other eye, still unable to see, but out of natural habit. He growled and when new adrenaline pumping, he got hold of the male and shoved him off.
Feeling dizzy, he got to his feet, not as quickly as he'd hoped, and started backing up, watching the male carefully. A list of fowl things to say ran through his head, but he held his tongue for the sake of his life.

Unguzo watched him, just waiting to attack again. He could have, very easily, and he wouldn't have felt bad about it. He was a fighter, but not what most people would consider honorable. He knew how his old pride had done things: ruthlessly. He would have no trouble killing this lion, even after offering him the chance to run.
But his attention was called away.
"Daddy, no, don't hurt him!" Hitilafu cried, running over.
She was absolutely drenched in tears, trembling and miserable. She had never seen anyone bleed before, and it was terrifying. She didn't know why the two were fighting, but she saw her daddy bleeding and the other lion hurt, and it just broke her little heart.
Unguzo growled at her, angry that she was near, and moved to her protectively, like he thought the other might hurt her. He looked at the lion, growled, then picked Hitilafu up in his mouth and turned to leave.
It wasn't worth his effort, anyway.

Alastair sucked in a breath, then exhaled rather quickly. If that cub had not run up into the fray, he'd probably have been dead by now. He turned quickly, limping as fast as he could to try and find his way back out of their territory. He wouldn't ever cross the border again. He said thanks to the cub silently, and retreated into the roguelands.

Unguzo, carrying Hitilafu, did not look back as the other lion fled. He didn't need to. He knew what it would look like: a coward fleeing in defeat. He had seen it many times before, though most of his opponents weren't usually so lucky. He had just had many, many opponents to pick from.
Sniffling, wiggling, Hitilafu watched the other lion run away. She wanted to say bye to him, and felt like it was his fault he had gotten her daddy mad enough to hurt him. She didn't know how it had happened, but she knew it was her fault. She would have to listen to her daddy now. If bad things like this happened when she didn't, she didn't want to risk it.
Unguzo took his daughter back home, and did not say a word to her. He sat in the corner, nursing his wounds and, though Hitilafu didn't know why, he was purring.
