[ P U R C H A S E R P ]

Previously, Adrian had thought that returning to Cyrus City meant only the continuation of a dull, boring life.

Perhaps he was wrong.

The surprise had started right off the bat when he was idly resting in Cyrus Park, abandoned by Alice. As was the usual when he was left on his lonesome with sketchbook in hand, he began to lazily draw rough sketches over the strangers in the park.

This process would have continued for the rest of the duration, but that was until the arrival of those two, little brunette May and snarky Tango. Their meeting had been the catalyst for everything. After exchanging retorts and compliments, the seventeen-year-old finally managed to wheedle it out of them.

They weren’t just mother and son, the son was born from a scent. Now that was a shocker. Born from scented oil? That was ludicrous.

Yet he actually believed it. He could surprise himself sometimes. When Adrian returned home he immediately searched about this supposed shop – it was actually real. That was surprising, because for a moment he thought that he may have possibly dreamt the whole meeting and that he might have to go the loony bin or something.

The same day he discovered the directions to this obscure shop, Adrian also slipped about his meeting with May and Tango. Bad move.

Just imagine a scene where a brunette woman hugging her younger brother to death, his face in her chest, and screaming “ADRIAN BUY ONE OF THOSE SCENTS TODAY!”

. . .

Embarrassing and awkward.

As such, the lad was now wandering the streets of the city, casually flitting through the shops with hands in his pockets. Even though the brunette had been sent on an errand to purchase some scented oil from this mysterious place, he could still take his time. After all, Alice never said when he had to get it, as long as it was done today.

That was when his olfactory senses picked up a plethora of scents. He pulled his hands out and adjusted his glasses, pondering this startling change. It must definitely be the work of the scented oil shop!

Occasionally sniffing the air, his nose led him to a quaint little shop with the sign ‘Solace Scents’ placed on the front of the building. Cautiously he grasped the door handle and pushed it open, hearing the tinkling of bells to signal his arrival.

Immediately he heard the sounds of bounding steps and a young woman came running down the stairs and into the shop, curls bouncing. Grey eyes gleaming, the supposed owner of the shop sent him a friendly smile. “Welcome to Solace Scents! May I help you with anything?”

“A-Ah. No, that’s alright. I’ll just look around for a bit,” he replied with the tip of his hat, eyes observing the woman carefully. She seemed innocent enough and there was nothing particularly suspicious about the shop. Her brunette hair was shades darker than his and she smiled widely.

“Okay then. Take your time.”

He did. Letting the door thud closed behind him, Adrian walked over to one side of the shop. It didn’t particularly matter which side he went to, for they were nearly identical. The walls were covered with shelves that held a wide array of candles, each emitting a unique smell.

Adrian came here with the intention of buying a scent, but now the question was which one. There was a variety of scents, each unique and catering to a different type of customer. He leaned forward and sniffed the odors coming from the oils. Some were pleasant, some where alright, and some downright disgusted him and made him shy away from it, but nothing that caught his eye.

The brunette retreated to the other half of the room, obviously done with looking at that side. He sighed and scratched his head. Would he be able to find a scent that was to his liking?

Bending down on his knees to examine the lower shelves that was when a green and brown candle had his attention. Long fingers wrapped around the glass and he picked it up, holding it up to nose to catch the scent better. ‘Mistletoe.

Instantly reminded of the holidays, nostalgic memories entered his mind and he wistfully smiled. Those had been the days.

This was the one.

He stood up and took it to the counter, where the smiling woman stood. “Chose your scent?”

Smiling, Adrian replied, “Yup.”

Coins clattered against wood and he walked out of the store, grinning.

[ L I G H T I N G P R O M P T ]

Adrian stares at the candle innocently laid before him. How long ago has it been since he purchased the scented oil? He can still smell the sweet scent of mistletoe wafting into his nostrils, but he knew that it would pale in comparison once he lit the damn thing.

Sighing, he languidly lifts a hand and gently wraps slender fingers around the smooth, cool glass before pulling the object even closer to his face. That was the problem.

As soon as he got home from buying the oil, he had meant to light it – really, he did! It was just that certain things always seem to come up when Adrian finally remembered about the green-and-brown candle. Adrian, can you go out and do the groceries? Adrian, don’t forget to do your homework! Adrian, father needs you to help out at the clinic right now. Adrian, you need to study, your finals are coming up soon!

Now was perhaps the sixth time the brunette had recalled the fact that he had yet to light the scented oil. This time around, however, it seems that there were no distractions to disturb. Yet, with all the past attempts to light it, he ruminates about lighting it.

That was probably a silly thought. Why bother buying a scented candle in the first place if one was going to decide not to light it? It was a better choice to abstain from purchasing it. But alas, it had been a request from his older sister, Alice. Adrian isn’t the type to disobey his elder sibling, especially because of her kind and innocent nature. Just the thought of her naïve demeanor made him protective of her – even when she wasn’t in the room!

He shook his head. No! He could not let that useless thought dominate his mind. This candle was in his possession, thus his responsibility. Leaving it to collect dust would be a waste of money and the nostalgic scent that fondly reminded him of Christmases past.

Indeed, before his resolve weakens any further, Adrian decides to light the candle for the first time days after its purchase.

Finding a match is easy. The boy’s first week back home was barely finishing up and at the start of his travels he soon discovered that matches were essential.

Amber eyes spot a pack of the sticks lying by the windowsill. He gets up from his seat and leans forward to grab the box, feeling the warmth of the sun’s light filtering through the dusty glass.

With graceful ease he grazes the match against the edge of the box, hearing the familiar scratching sound and spark of fire. The warm, orange light flickers and dances. Adrian carefully lowers it to the oil and watches the candle light for the first time.

He blows the fire out and discards the used match. In this time period, his olfactory senses can tell that the smell of mistletoe intensifies in the air. Turning around, a gasp escapes his lips and he stumbles backwards, feeling the familiar cushioning of his bed.

“Is this because that the shop isn’t a normal scented oil shop?” breathes Adrian, his mouth gaping in awe.

The sight before him is unnatural. Coming from the candle are wisps of earthy green and woody brown. They lethargically swirl around each other in a gentle dance.

After the shock wears off, he grins. “This shop is interesting. Very interesting.”

Adrian’s slumped figure hovers over the candle. Face cupped in his hands, he stares at the scented oil with reluctant amber eyes. Over the weeks, he lit it often. It was a lie to say that he hadn’t enjoyed the presence of mistletoe that reminds him of better, carefree days. Times as an innocent little boy that was honest and studious. That moment in history was surely an easier time that he wishes was not over. He completely forgets that the shop he had purchased his candle from is not a regular shop. He completely forgets that in the end, he’ll be walking away with not an empty candle, but something else.

Eventually, slender fingers reach for a match. He might as well as light it if he likes the smell of mistletoe so much. In his mind, Adrian thinks that he could always go back and buy another candle with the same scent. It couldn’t be too hard.

The familiar scratching sound of friction echoes in his ears and again he carefully holds the match. Careful to avoid the flickering flame, Adrian holds it up to the burner and it lights. Shaking out the match’s fire, he discards the sliver of wood into a nearby trashcan and watches the swirls of green and brown drowsily rise into the air.

He watches the unusual phenomena for a moment before his eyes lights up with panic. “Dang it! I forgot to pick up the groceries! Alice is going to kill me.”

Adrian scrambles for his wallet innocently lying beside the table and dashes out the door without a second thought, leaving the burning candle behind.

When the brunette returns, he is clutching an armful of bagged food so high that he can barely see what’s in front of him. It’s a miracle that he manages to open the door and walk inside. He gladly places the bags on the table and notices the cracked burner and candle wax split cleanly in half.

“Well what the frick happened here?” he whispers and leans over to the side to see oily footsteps. Confusion etches itself onto his face and the lad cautiously follows the trail of oil.

The path winds across the house, but at least there does not seem to be any chances to the rooms. At least, until Adrian gets to his room, in which he finds it in utter disarray as well as a child rummaging through his possessions.

His eyes widen. “Who are you?! And what did you do to my room?” he cries out.

The girl drops the bag in her hands and curiously looks at him. She smiles brightly and waves at him. “Oh, hi! I don’t have a name, how about you? Do you have one? And uh . . . I went looking through it?” She throws him an angelic look.

Adrian incredulously stares at her and wide eyes blink back at him. His mind thinks back to his time with Tango and May and then things start to click. “Adrian,” he eventually replies and starts cleaning up his bedroom.

She casually hops onto his bed and swings her legs, watching him tidy things up. “Adrian! That’s a nice name!” comments the girl. Things go silent for a moment before she finally speaks again. “Hey . . . will you give me a name?” she asks with the tilt of her head.

“Me?” he asks as he bends down to pick up fallen clothes. As Adrian straightens up he catches the strong scent of mistletoe, no doubt coming from the girl. It is a nice scent, a pleasant scent. He thinks for a moment. “Yuuka. It means pleasantly scented, I think.”

“Yay! You’re my Daddy!” she joyfully shouts and jumps off the bed and wraps her small arms around his legs. The tackle catches him by surprise and sends him hurling to the floor.

“. . . ‘Daddy’?” he repeats in a daze.

He nearly faints.

[ J O U R N A L E N T R Y - A D R I A N ]

It has been a while since I have written in a journal, but I believe now is this best time to pick up on it again.

Ahem.

My mistletoe-scented candle transformed into a living, breathing girl!

I never believed that Miss May’s words would hold true. Despite the solid evidence of Tango, there was always a hint of skepticism and doubt that lingered in the depths of my mind. The next time I see her I need to remind myself to apologize for my doubt.

Alice is delighted with this sudden turn of events. She has always dreamed of being an aunt; I am not surprised. Even with her job and life to tend to, I’ve increasingly noticed her often-occurring presence around the house. To think, it has only been a mere few days! I do not mind, however. Being a mere seventeen-year-old, I have little knowledge of caring for another person. It is nice to have her assistance sometimes.

Still, a child? I am utterly clueless at being a “father”. I am still in aftershock. Somehow I have managed to think up a name for her: Yuuka. Supposedly, it means “pleasantly scented” in another language. Quite fitting, is it not?

She has a sweet personality. It is nice. Yuuka also likes gardening, which is not too surprising considering her scent. Speaking of scent, she still smells like mistletoe. I am not sure if I am relieved about that.
