The percussionist in my band really are lazy. When our band director asks people to step up to play the parts no one stands up but me, and Justin. They all look down at the floor like they're trying to hide. I know they have the talent. They can sight read anything, they just don't want to.

Kokihi Here's an idea: DON'T TALK WHEN YOU HAVE A PART! stare just because there are a lot of rests in percussion parts, doesn't mean you get to chill and talk to your yea, i talk while i play, and then my mustachioed teacher (whose a girl) yells at us the next day

I'm in a high school band and to be honest, I don't take it seriously. None of the other instruments do either, not just percussion, so yes, I guess we are lazy. Our pieces aren't hard, either. We recently had testing and I scored perfect just by sight reading the stuff we were supposed to be practicing for weeks.
It's a slack class. Nobody really gives a s**t. And what's the big deal, anyways? (I guess I'm just saying this for the high school bands you don't have to tryout for.) Most of us are in band to get an easy 'A', anyways.

Every section has it's personality. I'm not saying it's everyone in that section, just an idea that high schools usually have. Your school might be different. Flutes - girly (oh don't want to get mud on my new shoes) Clarinet - (well mine last year was "hey, we think we are the Shiz but we're not. This year they are the alcohol drinkers of the band. Except the section leader who is quiet.) Saxophones - crazy people Brass - the competitors percussionists - lazy colorguard - preppy drum majors - unique.

Sukomo Ugh. I'm so tired of everyone calling percussion lazy. stare I mean like, in our percussion we have like, maybe 4 parts we can play in a song, and then 9 percussionists. We can't ALL play some of us have to sit out. and we can't put two on a part like other insturments. Then it'd just be too loud. And yes, sometimes we miss our parts because we're talking, but it's mostly to the other percussionists who AREN'T playing ...wait...we're not supposed to be lazy? Oh...oh God... ...I've wasted three years of band...

I don't really think a battery can be lazy... So, I'ma talk about pit! I'm a super senior pit member because I joined band in 8th grade. I was going to try out for battery my sophomore year but opted to stay in pit. With five years of experience in pit, I can easily say the following:
- A pit will not be called lazy if they behave. In my band, there are no-talking full ensemble rehearsals. You spoke? RUN LAPS!!! When you are not playing, you are standing and going over your music without making a sound. You get a break when the band gets a break.
- Don't complain about your part in front of other members. Most members would just play the music and not march, if they could.
- There is time for joking and there is time for srs bsns. Most of the time, when you are split into sectionals is the only time for some joking.
- I'm in pit. We play in an air-conditioned building during mini-camps. We have "story time" when we take breaks. We drink Slurpees during sectionals. People call us lazy. Damn straight. Stop complaining about marching and just join us. >:]
To be honest, though, the only time any percussionists in our band are deemed "lazy", is if they are in pit and they just complained about their part.

in my drumline we have 13 percussionist; 3 tenors, 5 basses, and 5 snares. i dont know why people complain about lazy lines. our line is pushed to the limit: no breaks, practice 5 times a week, 4 hrs of non-stop hard work. so if i were you, i would be in paradise, laziness, man i wish i had that. i was in pit too in 8th grade but joined drumline the year after

Your practice schedule sounds like what my band does. Most people don't believe me when I say we have 9:00 am - 9:00 pm practices on Saturdays. Does anyone else have insane BDs that schedule that?

Hahaha, as a percussion in concert band, we talk, but so does the rest of the band during rests. Our band is small, less then twenty people, and next year, so many percussionists are coming we need to have a seperate class for them.
I'm also Pit Section leader for my band, well, I'll be next year, but shiz, I'm gonna be a dictator, if they don't know how to read music i'm chucking em in battery XDDDD.
And I am not lazy, I manage to keep track of my music and I pay attention and kick the asses of the lazy bums in our class. Lol.
