The afterglow could be anti-climax depending on how bad the sex is. I hear truly bad sex is indeed possible.

I don't know. Painful doesn't necessarily mean bad, especially if you're with a particularly skilled partner. I suppose truly awful sex could come of a lack of experience of both parties, but then, if you have no touchstone to judge its badness, how bad can it be?
It's like that question, "if a tree falls in the middle of the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

Because there's always someone around to hear it, to paraphrase the great Terry Pratchett. :'D
To extend the metaphor, sure, you might not have TEH OTHER SEXES to compare it to, but you can still identify a sensation* as pleasurable or, like... not.
*Latex on skin, to choose an entirely random example.
