"I has a brother," she said, smiling. It was almost the same thing! Maybe. At least from what she'd seen on TV it seemed to be. "He HUGE and have long tail and walk on all four! See? He like doggy!" And he ate anything and he played with her, too!
She had no idea how strange that sounded.

Darsh made a face, sticking his tongue out as if something tasted bad. "Yuck. Brother. I have a brother, he's icky." As far as Darsh was concerned, Warren was a big fat attention-grabbing mind-reading threat. Darsh was the one with blue skin! What did that pink-haired twerp think he was doing, having blue skin too? AND only one eye! It made him cranky just thinking about it.

"My brother bestest brother in whoooollleeee world!" Carmel said. Then she paused. "Cept when he eats all cookies," she added honestly. "He have HUGE tummy and eats lots and lots." Which was frustrating to a sweet lover like herself.

"Maybe s'cause you're a girl." Darsh pondered. "Maybe sisters are better than brothers?" He looked at her thougtfully. She seemed to like her brother, so it wasn't likely she'd trade Chris for Warren. And her big brother probably wouldn't trade her for Warren either. Which was really too bad, since she was a pleasant person and Darsh would much rather live with her than the drooling cyclops he had at home. Then again... "Where did your brother come from? Mine came out of space." He added. Maybe space-brothers were different in the bad sort of way.

"He came from Scoo!" she said with a nod. That's where he always came from, after all. It was always "Wait until he's home from school," or "Chris is going to school now, but he'll be back!" She looked at the door, her internal clock kicking in. "He be from Scoo again soon!"

Unfamiliar with "Scoo" or where it might be, Darsh let this one slide. "I came from a cabbage." He said. With guardians like his, the whole baby-from-a-magical-veggie thing was made much of. The whole "gift of the earth mother" thing.

The word sounded familiar, then clicked in her head. "Carmel too!" she said happily. "Carmel cabbage! It smell like chocolate. But was Carmel."

"You did?" Darsh's face broke into a grin as bright as the sun. "We're the same, then!" Kind of. Kids that came out of cabbages had to stick together. "Are there more of us?" This wasn't something the boy had bothered pondering before and he wasn't sure what he wanted the answer to be. On the one hand, he liked being unique. On the other hand, there was strength in numbers.

"Uh huh!" Carmel said. "Chris from cabbage, Rayne from cabbage, Jordi--" and at this she made a face. There was obviously bad blood between the two girls, "from cabbage. Rory from cabbage, Wisp--" She stopped, her eyes watching something over his shoulder. Then she yelled, "CHRISSSS!!!" and bounced in the water, splashing everyone.
Chris snorted, stopping at the edge of the pool and sitting down. "Hey, Caramel," he said in those duel voices of his. "Darsh."

"Oh!" Darsh's eyes got biiig as Chris knelt by the pool. "You're her brother?" He grinned at Carmel and then at Chris, although he was still rather in awe of the huge boy with the beautiful voices. "We're doing arts and crafts together." He informed Carmel.

"Carmel didn't hatch until after the sign ups were over," Chris said as he pulled his little sister out of the water for a very wet hug. He didn't care, he wasn't wearing a shirt, anyways.
He got a squishy kiss on the cheek, too before he put her down in the water again. "Chris good at everyt'ing!" Carmel declared proudly. "He good at cookies and cake and fudge and--"
Chris inwardly sighed as her obsession with food showed yet again.

"Cake!" Darsh chipped in. "We're doing cakes." He splashed excitedly, absolutely positive that their cakes were going to be the best most popular thing at the fair. After all, Chris was apparently an expert and Darsh's confidence in himself knew no bounds. And Fish's sister was on their team too. That totally set them up for success. "We're gonna win the fair." He added importantly.

"I don't know if it's actually something that can be won," Chris admitted, "but I think we'll do fine." He glanced up as the teacher announced that the class was over, then reached down and picked up Carmel again. "Time to go home, Caramel."
"Car-mel," Carmel complained. "Bye bye, Darsh!"

"Bye!" Darsh waved back at her before surreptitiously checking that nobody who might want to drown him had shown up.
