Desmond looked toward the bush, ready to protect Dove whilst she made her getaway. He sniffed the air, but found no trace of enemy smells. Maybe she's nuts, he thought.

"...Maybe it was the wind? Nothing seems to be out there" /he smiled reassuringly.

Just then, the bush moved again and a small nose peeked ever so slightly out of it.

User ImageSilanthria was staring dreamily at the sky, taking breaks to nibble at the grass. The sunlight was bright today, brighter than she could remember it being lately. It seemed the rash of bad weather must be stopping. Shaking thoughts from her head, she hopped forward through the bush in front of her, and little by little, into the open field. Maybe today was the day she'd find another rabbit and try this friendship thing...maybe.

Squeaking in terror, she saw a huge male rabbit and turned to run back through the bush into her burrow. Unfortunately, she tripped over her own feet and tumbled to the ground.

The kitten had scared her half to death but even so she did not forget the buck's seemingly willingness to protect her. Shaking her head she made her way cautiously toward the young rabbit.

"It's okay..we aren't going to hurt you" she hoped her voice sounded reassuring, the after shock was still rattling inside her. It was clear the poor thing was alone, Dove didn't see any other rabbit around.. "Where is your mother little one?" she asked, nudging the little one back up on her feet.

"She...She's gone..." It seemed that was all the information on the subject she was willing to offer up to strangers. Yet there was a sadness in her eyes that betrayed just how long her mother might have been gone.

"Who are you?" She accepted help to her feet and stared at the two new rabbits trembling slightly.

Desmond watched the two, not sure what to say. After all, he hadn't been around kits since he was one. Perhaps it was best he kept quiet, but then, when had he ever done what's best?

"Well then, your father must be around?" He asked, smiling gently, "Surely a small kit like you isn't out her all alone."

If she was, then it was likely she'd survive long, after all, what would a kitten know of watching for predators. As he said it he knew they'd have to do something about the kit. He wasn't going to be responsible for leaving her on her own.

Gone..Dove knew very well what that meant. Turning slowly back to look to Desmond for some kind of advice..anything really, she wouldn't be leaving this kitten alone. The little ones sad eyes opened up a flood gate of memories Dove didn't want to relive.

They flashed across her eyes like a movie screen. She'd been so helpless when she watched her parent's die at the paws of a brutal fox. They had been snug in their burrow when her father had jumped up, telling her and her mother to wait there..something was digging at their burrow he told them. She watched her father leave, and her mother follow..he mother had always been stubborn and fearless.

Dove squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself to forget the awful moments that proceed from then on..she could hear the pained squealing and then the deafening silence...When she crawled up the burrow hole to look for her parents, she spotted a fox and her mother being dragged away.

She shuddered violently, and made up her mind. "you're coming with me" she said perhaps the first time ever being forceful in her entire existence.

Silanthria looked at the doe, a question in her eyes. Going with her? Why would she want me to go with her?

"Where? And what's your name? That guy is kinda of cute, is he your mate?" It seemed, that when nervous she asked questions, and wasn't ashamed of it. "I'm called Silanthria"

Nervously, she hopped in a circle before looking back at the two rabbits. Maybe she wanted to be friends, maybe friends went places together. It was all so new and confusing. Her tummy rumbled and she nibbled grass, one eye on the buck, since he was the most intimidating of the two.

"To my burrow, you can't just stay by yourself little one" She hoped the young kitten wasn't old enough to think she was patronizing her. Dove wasn't entirely sure what she was getting herself into, she could hardly take care of herself, she was afraid of her own shadow and couldn't go 3 feet from her burrow without undergoing an anxiety attack..this would be a challenge.

"My name is Dove, and no..I just met him" she shifted her weight, feeling embarrassed by her last question and anxious to move along and eat breakfast..her stomach grumbled watching Silanthria eat.

"Would you stay with me?" she asked her, not so sure she was going to take no for an answer..surely Silanthria didn't have a prayer if she was to stay by herself.

"Of course she will, she can't be left out here by herself. And I'll help you take care of her." He smiled, not wanting Dove to think he was irresponsible. "My name is Desmond, by the way, and that gorgeous bit of fluff is Dove. Just met, hmph, we met yesterday, that's a bit more than just!"

He wasn't sure why he cared what she thought, but he did just the same. Besides, he couldn't have her raising Silanthria all timid and frightened. No, that wouldn't do at all. He's just have to stick around and keep them both out of their shells, so to speak. How hard could it be really?

"Let's go both of you, food waits for no rabbit!" Chuckling, he hopped on, making sure they were behind him.

Giggling softly, Silanthria nodded at Dove. She'd go, it would be far better than living alone, never knowing how she'd handle the boredom and loneliness. She knew her mother wouldn't return, it had been far too long. Many nights had passed, and her mother had been overbearing at the safest of times.

"Thank you" She said softly.

Following Desmond gave her time to think about what had just transpired..She knew what gone meant, right when the young kit had said it..The sadness was evident even in her voice..and despite how she tried she couldn't keep the flashback from happening.

After all she too had both her parent's at a young age, and it hadn't even been quite that long ago. It was a cold rainy day, just like yesterday as a matter of fact, and she and her parent's had snuggled up close to keep warm. It was late in the evening when they heard the scratching of dirt at the top of their burrow hole.

Dove could never understand where her cowardice came from when her parents were such brave rabbits. There was nothing that could have saved them from the fox that night, they had sacrificed their lives for hers and she was wasting it away by trapping herself in her burrow all the time..

When they reached the grassy area filled with yummy plants to eat, Desmond smiled and winked at Dove and the kitten. After sniffing about for enemies, he waited for the does to eat and began to nibble.

We probably shouldn't stay long...now that we have a kitten It was as he though this that Desmond realized he liked the idea of kittens, especially where a lovely doe like Dove might be involved.

Maybe It's time I settled down, but then, that just could be mating season talking. Sneezing once, he shoved the thoughts from his head. This wasn't the time to think of such things, the day was too beautiful.

"Ooo!" Silanthria set about to bouncing around, somehow managing to get a nibble or two in through her jovial playing.

"I've never been up here, what's this!" She nibbled at each new plant that smelled delicious. Her antics were cute, but clumsy. Falling and tripping as she bounced about with a care in the world. After all, it had been a long time since she'd been able to drop her worries and fear and just play. No more cold lonely burrow for her!

Watching the cute kitten play made her anxiety escalate as some kind of strange new feeling surged through her...Motherhood was an alien thing to her, even as she was certainly old enough to be one, it wasn't something she had ever really considered. After all, Dove was afraid of her own shadow and adding a few kittens to the mix..well overbearing might be an understatement.

She just managed to swallow back the urge to scold the kitten for hopping around so carelessly. This was a nice day and she didn't want to ruin it for them by being ridiculous..she could tell that Desmond was standing watch anyway. She nibbled quickly and quietly..she was hoping that they were going back to her burrow after this..she'd had enough excitement for one day.

"We should head back, I daresay we've eaten enough" Lazily, Desmond loped over to the kitten and bumped her towards home, they had been out too long and he didn't want to run into one of the thousand.

A contented feeling went through his body as he herded both the doe and kitten toward home. It was nice to feel as though he had a family again, he hadn't realized he was such a lonely ole buck. Maybe this was going to be good for him as well as them.
