She sighed softly and pushed away from Vahn. Not in rejection, but just to put enough distance between their bodies so that she could see his face and he could see hers. Placing her hands firmly on his shoulders and squeezing slightly she shook her head.
"Vahn, there is a saying that I have heard from the humans-- 'If we don't learn from our history, we're doomed to repeat it.' Are you familiar with it?"
Nobility? Once upon a time, she had been a princess, betrothed to a prince. It sounded nice, sure. The beginnings of her very own Happily Ever After. But it was not so-- For it was staged in a kingdom of corruption and treachery. Inked in blood, her history was a tale of tragedy. She had been stripped of her royal rank long ago. HE was the only one she allowed to call her princess now. Though to her it was more a term of endearment rather than standing-- but perhaps, she wondered, he thought differently? It felt as if through the years, he had constantly grappled with the gap that he thought there should be between them. Looking for reasoning to promote, to convince himself (and her, though he never succeeded on that front) that she was beyond him. Had he forgotten, that he too was born of noble birth? That he was every bit as noble as she? And even if he were not, it wouldn't have mattered. Titles were nothing more than words. It was actions that mattered, that proved character and the quality of ones self. But still, he seemed desperate to create a distance between them, even as he clung to her. She had no desire to be placed on a pedastool.
"If you wish to right these wrongs my love, real-- or imagined-- Then promise me. Promise me that you will first change the patterns that lead to that very doom. Do not repeat our cursed history!"
Her eyes and voice were pleading as the pain of the years apart filled her.
"Please..."

"A dream..."
He closed his one good eye, smiling to himself as he spoke softly. "This is like a dream...except I don't think I've yet to experience such a good start as this." She was right, of course.
Brash and quick as wildfire he was to condemn himself for every wrong there was-- she was steady and unyielding as the light from a signaling flame, keeping him focused and anchored.
"To repeat...that...any of that...I would sooner throw myself into the Undying Fire...yet, I still don't understand completely...how..."
He gestured around her, still confused as to how this all was possible; even if it was as Walter said, through much trouble and planning.

Leaning up on tip toe, she pressed her forehead to his and closed her eyes.
"Some time ago, when I willed myself to vanish... my soul retreated into the depths of darkness. Little did I know, that there was another being who dwelled within those depths, who heard my cries. From that encounter, many things came to pass... you have met one of the products of that day, I believe. Teira?"
She paused to give him a chance to register the name before she continued,
"Teira was born of my soul and spirit, but she is not me, as you've probably noticed if you've met her-- Her personality is unique unto herself. While she may have inherited some of my knowledge or abilities, that child is her own person, with her own family. She has found a place in this world, and a home with those who bear the name of Darkness. It was they who also helped me..."
She smiled and leaned her cheek against his shoulder as she spoke softer now.
"This vessel is temporary, a gift from Mr. Dark. It exists only on this isle-- To exist outside of this veil, then my true body must be recovered. For now, the solitude suits me, but I cannot ignore my responsibilities. Ra'kar'shei'lian was never meant to exist on Gaia... And her ambitions threaten the balance of this world. I will face her, and I will end this. But I would ask your help, my love."

"...True body...."
He couldn't quite believe what he was hearing. All this time he had been focusing on the wrong person... lashing out and thinking he saw the solution.
But.
All this time... the answer lay with..Well, I can't exactly say I didn't have some feeling of the sort...
...I may have... maybe tried too hard...
...to justify myself...
"I see.
I..hope she can forgive me then, for all the grief I caused her. I just wanted...
I just wanted you back."
He looked up at her.
"Sierra..."

She glanced up at him and raised an eyebrow as she scrutinized him, concern plain on her face.
"Forgive you? Why-- what did you do?"
Her hands slid down from his shoulders to slide around his back, her arms wrapping around him.
"Heh, perhaps it is as they say, you don't realize what you've got 'til it's gone."

"I didn't believe she was meant to exist in your stead..you have to understand.
I was desperate.
I wanted you back...no matter what I had to do. I...I just didn't fully understand what it was I did have to do..."
He lowered his head, shaking it once. "It was stupid of me, and I don't think she'll ever be the same around me again."
He squared his jaw, even as he clenched his teeth. "I shouldn't have listened to anything he said.."

Shaking her head, she looked away and laughed.
"You really do have a way with women."
'Honestly...'
Meeting his gaze, her face hardened and she spoke seriously. "I trust that all your experience will help when you apologize to her formally."
'It probably won't change anything though... still.'
Something flickered in her eyes before she spoke again, and when she did, her voice was neutral.
"What-- changed? Why are you here Vahn? What's different that you came now?"

"....."
He sat there silent for a moment, her question biting deep into him.
He found himself at odds with the person he was, compared to the person he needed to be. Just what was different? Hadn't this scene played itself out one too many already?
Always realizing when it was already too late?
Wasn't that the reason why she had ended up in the state she was in now-- because of his actions?
"I had given up."
He could remember the time he had spent in frustration and despair at not being able to find his brother, let alone Ra'Kar...time spent in self-exile on the windy dunes of Barthavos...
"An old friend helped me out of the darkness that had become my life...yet again." Walter...
"I'm here because this is the turning point.
This is where it all changes. Where it has to change."

"How?"
One word.
Her face held nothing. He'd seen this carefully blank expression on he face more times than he'd be able to count. That careful mask of control that she'd been taught as a child. The one that gave away nothing.

"By you being here...Me seeing you, knowing that there is still hope to undo what was done..."
He stood up now, and folded both arms across his chest, looking at her with a fierce stare that challenged the blankness she swathed herself in now. He had spent too many nights guarding her at all sorts of affairs, to not notice when she slipped on her 'political armor'. She was carefully gauging him, afraid of letting anything show on her side...
Which meant she was unsure. Most likely not convinced.
Hell, he wouldn't be with himself either!
But this changes everything. I can't afford to keep running in circles.
I chose to swing my sword for her once before, and then chose to love and stand by her no matter what.
This isn't about me or the world anymore...
I will not let her exist like this..I will have my children see their mother again...even if it kills me!
"I'm not running directionless anymore." He gripped his forearms.
"You come first. Nothing else, Sierra. Not before anyone."

Slowly a smile slipped onto her features in spite of herself, melting away the mask. Sierra met that challenging gaze with a wry grin. Shaking her head at him, she laughed. She couldn't help it. He was just so hopeless in some ways, and yet she loved him anyway.
"Idiot."
It was so direct and so plain coming from her, but it held so much.
"There is always hope."
Her hand strayed to her face, where she rubbed a little wearily at her temple and sighed.
"Sometimes, you get so wrapped up in focusing on one thing Vahn. One thing that becomes all you can see, all you can think about-- You get so distracted by your obsession with it, be it a person or a situation, that you stop seeing everything else. You blind yourself."
She stepped back in to him, her voice softening a degree, still serious, but more encouraging and compassionate now. Guiding.
"As long as you have a goal, or a destination, you have direction. But naturally, if you don't pay attention to your surroundings and just go charging off, you're bound to get lost. Instead of seeking help, you have a mule headed habit of trying to do everything on your own."
Her hands reached up and cupped his face.
"Asking for help doesn't make you weak, Vahn. Letting your stubborn pride stop you from asking or accepting it, does."
Leaning up she pressed a soft kiss to his lips.
"Open your eyes.
And if you still find yourself lost, I will be your compass and point the way. Always."
If he was truly committed to changing things, then this would be his personal task.

He blinked, wide eyed at the sudden seriousness in her voice as she reprimanded him. "Ah---"
But then she followed up with it, leaving him with his mouth open as he watched her relax. "....." He let his mouth close, unable to refute her truths. He wasn't so good at looking at the grand scope of things... he was only able to really immerse himself into one fraction of a thing at a time-- while of course, someone like Victor, was able to apply themselves to the whole.
Just one of many differences between the twin siblings, of course.
He felt his hands clench close from habit as she stepped in, his gaze refusing to meet hers at first; faltering under her soft voice. It wasn't long before he caved in, the moment her hand touched him.
Mule headed...that's one way of putting it... He thought wryly.
He breathed her in, closing his right eye for a moment before opening it to look at her again. "My compass...all this time it might as well have seen that I was going in the opposite direction from where you would show me...
Sierra..." He clasped her hand with his, fingers molding against the back of her skin as he breathed her in once more. For this...I would have given the world...done anything to have back...but now..the direction I take has become so painstakingly clear...how could I not take it?
"I will help you get your body back...there may still be a way..." Although I may have to end up asking the last person I ever wanted to talk with...
The only other man I know with binding magic strong enough...
...a man who saved you more than I could...
...damn him.
