This is a pretty big delema to me. Because, I've always believed that it isn't really anime/manga unless is originates in Japan. Yet, one of my greatest dreams is to have my Ameri-manga published. Of course, if Ameri-manga isn't received well now, then there will be no hope for me later.

So then, the only way to make it would be to learn fluent Japanese(not my strong point), move to Japan(exspensive), find someone who will publish me (and most likely have to waste several years as an assistant in order to get that privaledge), and that doesn't even promise that people will buy it. So, realistically, the entire "psuedo-elope to Japan" thing is hopeless.

So basically, what happens now will pretty much shape what I do later.

You have some good dreams, don't give up yet. Life can only give you so much lemons, because it has to give some to everyone else. That had no relevance, or did it. I think Ameri-manga as a whole isn't received well, but if a manga has a good story and art, then no matter the artist's nationality, people will like it. Seven Seas is an American Manga company, and I like it's No Man's Land manga. Keep going.

I couldn't have said it better myself comrade.

Just like you Epsilon, Mago and I have our own business we need to start. But we'll save that story for another time.

American 'manga' isn't manga.
Manga=Japanese word for comic.
Comic=English word for manga.
Let's keep it that way. But notice that most of the manga-esque cartoons suck horribly. Like all that 4Kids and ABCFamily crap.

I meant their original ones. But they should die for those, too.

Sorry if I'm misinterpretting, but that makes it sound like comics and manga are the same. If that is what you're saying, I'm afraid I disagree.

Manga and American Comics are different. Sure, they're both written in the same basic format, but they have some huge differences. For one, most comics are in color, while manga is in black and white screen tones. On the less concrete side, manga focus much more on emotion and identity as a society, while comics focus on strength, courage, and identity as an individual. There are, of course, exceptions. Hellsing is a manga, but it's pure a** kicking. Not message at all. But just the same, Spider Man has a lot of emotional and idealogical elements to it. No one rule defines all, but for the most part that's what I think.

On a more positive note, 4Kids should rot in hell. If they were a kid in my school, I'd wire their braces to the ceiling fan and take their lunch money. And I don't usually have violent tendencies, either. sweatdrop

That's what I said. Comics and manga are the same. The are both books which use panels to portray a story. And again: Manga=Japanese word for comic book and vice-versa. I am talking about the WORD, not the STYLE.
And I'd do worse to 4KIDS. If they were a person at my school, I'd wrap their tie into a slip-knot around their neck and hang them off the school flag pole, which is about 30-40ft. off the ground. Instant death-98%, but paralysis guaranteed. We have Seifuku-esque(Japanese school uniform style {girls}) uniforms at school.

I don't think we need to think this hard, I think Japanese manga artists need to sit down with American "manga" artist and see what they think of each other. Then that would be cool.

WOw...I want ot do that!!!!!!!!!! I would totally kiss Takeshi Obata-sama's boots!!! Sugoi!!!! *starry eyed* Of course, that's assuming that he didn't think that I was an insult to the name of manga......which is always a possibility. gonk

Wow, it appears that I have missed a lot on this subject. =^_^=

To start things off, when I said anime and manga, I didn't mean the substance of anime and manga. In general I think most people have acknowledged that anime and manga aren't just animation/cartoons and comics, but are an artform of their own. I believe it was in 1993 or so that anime and manga was declared by the international Arts Archive (something along those lines. They're big wigs who dictate the world of "art") an official art style/genre. It is an art benchmark such as Picasso, Romanticism, and Realism (you can look up those art styles on your own time since I'd rather not get off subject).

Although I agree that mangas are comics in a sens, the word "comic" is also a very broad art style that is distinctive just like anime. To put bluntly, it all depends on the view you take on it. If you translate literally (not only word for word but as in writing, etc.) then yes, manga and comics are one and the same. If you take a more artistic approach to it, manga and comics are on two very different spectrums of the same world. The way I think of it is this. By race I fall into the Asian-Pacific Islander Group (Filipino-Samoan-with a pinch of Irish). Now a friend of mine is African American. We are two very different looking people with very different mindsets of the world, however we are people none the less. Applying this to manga and comics, both are works of art that use a combination of artistic theatrics and panels to tell a story, however none the less, BOTH ARE COMICS.

We could debate this all year long but really, it is a very opinionated subject. It depends on how you take things. Are you artistic or are you literal or could you be a rare breed of both? Whichever the case, everybody is right.

Oh yes. About meeting an anime/manga artist face to face, I would be nervous but not as much. The one person in the industry I would like to meet are the writers of the stories. Where does the inspiration for such captivating pieces come from? Such as Shin Takahashi (which is actually both the writer and artist of his works) or the writer of .hack and Ghost in the Shell (yes they are the same person and I feel ashamed for forgetting his name). But definately, Hiroaki Samura. I would give my body to a year of hard labor to have an interview with that man.
