L'thor chuckled softly and looked up at his dragon. "Well? Can he?" Of course she would say yes; Raith loved to be made a fuss of. She was just as vain as he was, but somehow it seemed only right for her to be that way. Of course he himself had no intention of changing but he could see what the trait might annoy people. Not in Raith though. She was a beautiful, wonderful dragon. Vanity in her was not vanity; it was merely recognizing and acknowledging the truth. He liked to think the same was true of him, but the fact was that people's tastes in men differed; he was not universally attractive and could admit that. Raith was. Raith was lovely.

The sleek green gave a rumble of amusement and dipped her head briefly. "Of course he may," she said to her rider, "it's only natural that he should want to."

Of course it was. L'thor chuckled again and turned his attention back to Nehren. "She says you may," he nodded, "and as for when I take you, well, I don't much mind; my duties don't keep me occupied all day at present so I can come for you another time if you prefer." If it were him, he knew he'd want to know right away rather than mess about with fish that he might never have to sell ever again. Then again, he knew himself to be one of the least patient men in all of Pern. Some people could wait to find out even such pressing things as whether or not their family would release them to a Weyr.

Nehren waited patiently peering from Andals side, waiting with baited breath from the answer from the rider having some idea that the man would have to see the dragons permission in this but like most people that didn’t share the connection with a dragon and weren’t bonded through their minds he could not truly understand what passed between them, but maybe he would soon and that thought stirred deep excitement in his gut and made him feel slightly sick. But as permission was granted he broke into that smile again, that the green would allow it pleased him most, it was conformation that they were telling the truth that he might have a chance to impress.

He walked forward and past the dragon rider, the greens shadow falling over the head of shaggy brown hair and then completely engulfing his form in the cool shelter, it sent a shiver up his spine but he held resolute and moved closer pressing his fingers gently to the dragons leg at first, watching that majestic head and eyes for signs of her reaction as he pressed his hand down, slowly spreading his fingers down and out untill his palm rested flat against the green hide. Smiling as this seemed to not cause any negative effects he rubbed along the leg of the green, It was smooth for the more part but he could feel a few small bumps and patches of roughness, some of the dust that she had stirred up on landing had also clung to the lower parts of her leg causing different texture, but he rubbed that off as much as he could.

He was forced to crane his neck somewhat to watch the greens head but he didn’t mind, and he got the impression that the dragon was rather pleased by the attention just in the way she held herself, he was normally good at telling animals emotions, a few in the small cot had other heard and runner beast which he occasionally tended when he was younger and the same body language could be applied to people and animals most of the time. “Thankyou.” he told the dragon lowering his hand but staying where hwas he looked back at the rider and his brother. “Can we go now?” he asked, he wanted to tell his father about this he realised, he wondered if he would be proud of him and see his worth through the dragons eyes, although he knew his father had never shown any thing put pride in his sons he didn’t openly show it an any obvious way to the boys themselves.

But he looked at Andal and saw he wasn’t surprised by the request and he walked back towards him. “you don’t mind do you Andal?” he asked awkwardly, at the same time he caught sight of the cook and his assistant over his brothers shoulder, the mountain of a man looking ready to burst a blood vessel, his face red with anger that the boy he had thought to lay the blame on for the accident to the cook was most likely to escape. Hah. He stuck his tongue out at him, unable to resist enticing the enraged man knowing he wouldn’t dare come closer to the dragon.

Andal followed his gaze and shook his head. “I guess I don’t have much choice look after yourself Ren.” he advised and ruffled the kids hair in an affectionate gesture, which only caused the boy to frown and reaching up to straighten it again (not that it made much difference.) But then he gently reached up and hugged his sibling, a quick and fleeting slightly awkward embrace but he knew that he wouldn’t see him for a while. Andal knew it to. “Look don’t think about it to much Ren” he advised wisely “I’ll get Da to send Flick for a message once your settled.” (flick was he dads brown Flit.) Then both sets of eyes, brown and hazel went to L’thor. “So can you take him now Rider?” Andal asked “I can’t imagine that it will take longer than a short flight for your dragon.”

Raith's eyes whirled a stronger blue as the boy stepped back. "Tell him he is most welcome, Mine" she said with a soft, deep croon. "I think he'll make a good rider you know. He knows how to respect a dragon already."

L'thor smiled up at the green and stroked her shoulder fondly. "She says you are most welcome, Nehren, and I feel now is as good a time as any to set off." He spotted the youth's gesture towards a large man in the crowd who looked about ready to have an apoplexy out of sheer rage. "A pity I must tear you away from whatever pleasant plans you had for the rest of the afternoon," he added in amused tones, giving the pair of men a pleasant smile and a wave.

"In any case," he went on, nodding to Raith to dip her shoulder. "Time we set off." As the dragon lowered her stance and extended her forearm, L'tor cast a last glance over at the fuming man and chuckled to himself. Shaking his head, he stepped up to his usual perch between Raith's neck ridges with practiced ease and secured his riding straps before extending a hand down to Nehren. "Just step onto her arm there and take my hand," he instructed, "I'll pull you up in front of me."

The boys pleasure at being addressed by a dragon even indirectly was clear and he was having trouble holding that stiff mask with everything that was happening and it was cracking more and more, that’s why he had been so brass as to wind up the cook’s man more, although his brother didn’t seem to be impressed either he let its pass. Even though it would most likely mean he would have to let the cook have his way and accept a lower price for the fish to prevent their relationships from turning sour. And seeing he was one of their main points of the trade they would need that.

The brothers exchanged their last goodbyes between each other, exchanging a few privet words, some reassurances. After all Ren would always go back one way or another and it wasn’t goodbye forever, and Andal promised that he would attend the hatching if he could and offer support. And even if Nehren was not to know it Andal also had his own reasons for allowing his sibling to go back before work was done, no brother to tend made it much more simple to find a whole different sort of companionship for the night and he knew a few girls of the hold that were quite taken with the handsome youth.

So in this parting there were affections exchanged but both found it hard to feel deep sorrow in the leaving of the other for it was time that Nehren found his own way. And it would stop him thinking such melancholy thoughts about the two missing members of their family.

Not wanting to keep L’thor waiting to long and focusing his mind on the thrills of actually flying! On dragon back no less he hurried over to mount the green, he stepped onto the outstretched leg and curling his fingers round one of the straps instead of the outstretched hand he pulled himself up, it was meant as no snub to the rider, Ren was just not one who was exactly comfortable with physical contact, partly through his reserved manner to strangers but as well as that it was a lack of tactile communication growing up. A masculine working environment didn’t exactly breed such close relationships.

So he sat forward on the dragons haunches clinging tightly with his legs, trying to remember what he had been told about riding bare back on runners. And he actually held a good seat, if a little stiff. He might be built with coltish angles and long limbs but he had shown he still held agile movment in the way he had climbed onto the dragons back. He looked over his shoulder at the rider, and then down at the people below him who had started to emerge now it seemed that the dragon was leaving, a few even waved him, wishing him good luck, and a few maybe in relief that their own offspring had not been searched. But it was nice to be leaving Keroon hold with good feeling. Nehren lifted his hand slowly and waved back. The last time he might ever do so.

L'thor smiled faintly, approving of Nehren's independence, and secured the boy with the riding straps. "Just lean forward and hold onto a neck ridge," he said as Raith shifted herself and raised her head to look up into the air. The sleek green shifted then, bunched her muscles and flung herself into the sky. With a few beats of her wings she was above the buildings, and then she found a thermal and spread her pinions wide to spiral up into the air.

"Right then," L'thor said with a grin, "which way should we be heading?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 29, 2009 12:36 pm

Nehren shifted slightly after the straps were secure making sure that he had the most comfortable position available to him, it was very different from riding a runner or a heard beast, for once there was no saddle and he could feel the bone, muscle and ligaments moving beneath him as the dragon shifted ready for take off he dropped forward to grip the neck ridge tightly with both hands. Feeling sure the great rush of wind would knock him off the broad back, although the air pressure as they rose in fact secured him more firmly.

As they drew higher into the air he looked down at the shrinking hold and had to look away again quickly a little worried he might throw up at the sight of the faces watching him becoming no more than specs on a wide and open landscape. Green stretching on to a gold line and then blue…the sea. And his home was right on the cost, considering it took them half a days walk from the small cot it suddenly seemed that they were hardly more than a few flaps away from the wide expanse of crystal blue, only a few boats bobbing on the horizon. The ships would be coming in now, storm season was on its way and it was dangerous to be on open water during that time, even the coast edge could be treacherous as his mothers untimely death had proven, but he couldn’t even really remember her anymore. Even though he knew he should missed her he was realistic in the fact that he most likely missed the idea of her and having a mother than the women herself, even her face now blurred and changing in his memories.

But that was not occupying his mind at the moment and if it was then it was only a fleeting thought, he was looking over the elegant arch of the dragons neck at the land below, trying to gain his Barings from up in the air, but as he focused his eyes he found that it wasn’t hard to do, below them he could just make out the dirt track that the generations of his family had trodden for many years to go back and forth to the hold. It was a scar of dusty brown in the otherwise flawless covering of green, trees and grassed invading the land around them, a few farms and farm houses outside the main hold were the only other signs of life directly below them.

“There.” Ren pointed it out, the faint trail “that tack leads directly to my home. All you have to do is follow it.” He turned his head back to look into the distance his lose strand of hair whipping his cheeks with such force they stung and the rush of wind so far up trying to steal the breath from his lips so that it had been hard to breath. But it was wonderful, he felt alive and utterly free. And as his confidence grew and they started to move he took his hands of the dragons neck ridge and stretched his arms into the air letting the wind batter his skinny frame and then lowered them out either side of him, stretched out like he had his own great wings.

L'thor smiled as Raith set off above the trail of her own accord. He remembered well the thrill of his first flight. The world looked so very tiny and you felt so... perfect. He had anyway, still did. This, more than anywhere else in the world, was where he belonged. His first flight with Raith had been even more incredible than the trip with that blue rider. Minds, hearts and souls joined as they swooped off the ledge and then soared up above the Weyr. Perfection they had been, poetry in motion, strength and grace embodied.

He didn't bother to speak to Nehren; the lad would be too busy enjoying this to pay much attention he was sure, and the wind of their speed would tear his words away anyway. Instead he too spread out his arms, and he closed his eyes with a smile. "You are perfection Raith."

The green flew on above the trail, her sharp eyes already picking out their destination. "I know I am," she responded, "I have been perfect since the moment I found you, and you have been perfect since the moment you found me."

He didn't respond to that, didn't need to. She knew everything he might have said in any case.

"We draw near," Raith said after an indeterminate period of silence. I shall land close to the dwellings, unless the boy wishes us to land somewhere else?"

L'thor nodded to this as they began to circle. "Where should we land?" he asked of Nehren. "Anywhere in particular?"

The boy peered over the side of the dragons neck again as they neared his home, it had seemed to take no time at all and his practical mind chirped in to point even regular day chores would be so much easier with a dragon with no need to spend such time travelling from one place to the next but able to take it all in from the air. Including his little cot which now looked nothing more than a childs plaything.

There were several homes constructed around a centre square where a tall tree was built, long branches stretching out to shelter the homes around it and leaves glittering with jewel like drops of sea spray which was carried like rain by the harsh water wind. Trees had also been planted carefully around the houses like a wall to help shield the community from the harsh elements and hold the land together and stop it crumbling into the sea, around them where farming fields with sherries and heard beast and a few runners, barns for the animals had also been constructed outside the circular protection of trees and down from the plat form where the cot rested was a long stretch of pebble beach.

A wooden Jetty shot off the end of the beach and into the water and was home to several boats bobbing in the water, three larger fishing boats and several smaller vessels were currently moored to it.

But the whole place had a sense of peace to it and homely familiarity even for those that had never seen it before, the path cut through a gap in the tree wall inviting you into the embrace of the community and the chimneys puffed smoke merrily into the air carrying smells of cooking and hot Klah. A good thing to as the waves hitting the jetty looked to be growing bigger and the rain had started to speckle the ground. The wind was also picking up.

Luckily Ren was still to enthralled to notice the cold and the sudden bite in the air but he pointed out the spare fields below them “Any of those will be fine.” he told the rider, “or that one has a spare barn which might be big enough for your dragon.” he pointed out the empty field with the brown mud brick bard with the packed roof, it would be warm and dry in there at least.

Raith began circling down towards the indicated field only a moment later. "I shall stay outside," she said to L'thor, I'd feel like a heardbeast, going inside a barn." L'thor chuckled and nodded as they continued their leisurely decent; he could understand that, and the mental image was quite amusing really.

Some moments later, they landed smoothly and once he was sure that Nehren was still well balanced, L'thor released the lad from the riding straps. It was nice place here, he considered as the green once again extended a forearm to allow her passengers to get to the ground. It was - he fumbled free of the straps himself as he pondered, but didn't move to dismount right away - it was a peaceful sort of a place. He'd never really been anywhere like it before; his family had never troubled to stop and trade anywhere so small.

"No crowds to scatter this time," Raith commented, sounding half amused half disappointed. "I'm sure there will be plenty of people rushing over to investigate us soon... or creeping as close as they dare anyway."

L'thor patted her neck and smiled to himself. "Yes, I imagine they will. I hope Nehren's father is happy to release him. It would be a shame not to be able to take him back to the Weyr; I like the lad." He already found himself hoping that Nehren would Impress quickly; it was natural to want that for those you Searched, he supposed.

The first one to greet them did so by alighting atop Raith’s nose. Small claws gripping the hide as he chirred a greeting at the newcomers. It was of course the brown fire lizard that had been mentioned previously. A good sized and good natured flitt who had been a gift from his fathers friend in the Southern continent, that meant his father was on his way most likely. Flick normally stuck within a short distance of him, and indeed people had started to appear from the trees, walking across the field all curious as to what a dragon rider would be doing here. They did not get many visitors let along dragon riders. Dragons even passed over them on search the cot was just to small to take much note of.

At first it was the kids that came charging across the field, their parents had never considered dragons to feature much in their lives so had not told the children anything but the old stories and Harper tales of the dragons as protectors of Pern, and they had the childish freedom of curiosity that over rode fear, they had spent their youth chasing tunnel snakes in the sea carved stone and stealing wild wherry eggs. It was the same up bringing Nehren had experienced and it built into a reckless abandon of such things. In the small community children were watched but allowed to play as they wished, allowed to be children before they were introduced to the hard labour that would take up their adult lives. And then they would learn to be more careful, and learn the price if they weren’t.

Nehren scrambled down to the grass as soon as the straps where free to greet them only to get bombarded with a million questions. What was the dragon doing here? Had he been flying? Was that his dragon!? And so on. Nehren just tried to shush them with gentle hand movements and flushed a little caught up ore by their excitement combined with his own.

A couple of the children even ran under the greens legs recklessly. They weren’t afraid. The adults hurrying after them however were more weary of the dragon and hung back slightly, however there was not a man or women among them who locked delicate or would be mistaken for any lord or Lady of the hold, they were powerful and prideful having to keep their retreat protected from the occasional holdless and providing almost entirely for themselves they were not to be trifled with. And at the fore of the group was a man who locked like a heard beast, his arms and chest where so broad. Although he had developed a little pudge around his middle and his dark hair was being invaded with streaks of grey his dark hazel eyes were quick and intelligent. They were eyes that matched Ren’s almost perfectly.

He stepped forward and clapped his hand on Ren’s shoulder in greeting with a force which almost made the boys legs buckle. “good to have you home son.” he gruffed, before eyeing the rider. “Even if it is much earlier than expected” Nehren bit his lip nervously before seeking to explain. “this is L’thor da’ he…well his dragon said I have potential to be a rider.” His father nodded slowly “did he know and what makes him think that I’ll let him take my son into the danger of fighting thread?” he asked, Ren went silent and blinked, he hadn’t been expecting that.

Raith crooned a greeting to the flitt as he alighted on her nose. "It looks as though we're more popular here," she said to L'thor as the children began to swarm.
"What a lot of young ones, aren't they sweet Mine?"

L'thor rolled his eyes internally. Raith knew very well that he despised children; she was teasing him, horror that she was. Still, he could overlook his dislike for now. As a brief clear patch in the gaggle of children cleared, L'thor hopped down into it. He then had to put up with several of them tugging at his clothes and asking him if he'd swap his dragon for a shell collection. Egh. Thank goodness he was never expected to reproduce, he'd probably have driven to distraction by his offspring, and no doubt would have been a terrible parent to boot. Well, he wouldn't have to endure these ones for long. He ignored the children and turned to Nehren's father.

"A good question," he said with a nod. "I suppose you might let him go because you saw that it was his duty to try to Impress given that he can. There again, perhaps you might let him go because you would be proud to have a dragonrider for a son. Or perhaps you might let him go because he wants to go. I don't know your mind though, sir, so I suppose you shall have to tell me why you plan to allow him to go, if indeed you do. I hope you will," he went on, turning his head to look at Nehren with a smile, "he has great potential."

What an insult! The children would inform the rider, how ignorant he was and that the largest shell collections with no broken or cracked shells were highly prized, a dragon in comparison wasn’t very good at all, but when he failed to take not of this they went back to playing round the greens legs. Chasing each other round the large form and hiding behind her from their parents having caught on quickly that the elders were more afraid of approaching the beast then they were.

Flick chirped happily at the dragon, nosed her warmly a few times and flew back down onto Ren’s fathers shoulder, holding his head proudly and making self important whirrs at the rider. The flit was smart enough to work out that this man was the leader of the small community and as he was the one that he looked to that must mean he was equally important if not more so.

Ren’s father who’s name was Ulen eyed the stranger, unimpressed by the mans brash attitude and arrogant high handed tone. “the way I hear it your weyr are just about burstin’ at the seams, so that makes me think that you don’t need no more dragons, and I don’t need to loose another one of my family, we look after us and ours here dragon or no dragon.” Flick had also flown onto Ulens shoulder to join in telling off the rider in his own chattering manner flapping his wings and bobbing the small brown head, he quite clearly had little to know idea what was happening but he was enjoying backing up his human none the less and was having a grand time making sure the small fire lizard voice was heard above all others, even if he was mostly ignored.

Nehren sighed softly and reached up at his point curling his fingers round his fathers hand that was still resting heavily on his shoulder. “Da’ I want to go, you know I didn’t want to be a fisherman’s son forever, you said you’d let me go.” he pointed out.

Man and boy locked eyes for a moment and a small battle of wills commenced between the pair, his father trying to cow the boy and stare him down but even though Ren would usually so easily concede to another on this he wouldn’t back down. “I want to go.” he stressed to the man, his expression set. Ulen frowned. “I expected you to learn a craft, you’ve always had to tender a touch for this work, I expected you to be healer of herdsman.” he sighed. It seemed that was out of the question and Nehren treated those comments with what he thought they deserved, namely silence.

Ulen looked towards the sky where the grey clouds were still gathering the freckling of water on the ground was not stopping and soon it would get worse. “your beast is welcome to a wherry from the field over from this one, for now you should come back with us, theres a storm rolling in and I have Klah on the fire.” he told him as the villagers seemed to take this as a sign to move back to their homes, calling out to the children and herding their excited offspring away from the dragon, no doubt she would be the talk of the community for many seven days yet.

L'thor just shrugged. Yes the Weyr was too full, but that didn't stop queens rising, now did it? He doubted there was much he could add to influence Nehren's father, and the boy seemed to have the crux of his argument covered in any case. That was all there was to it really. Anyone in the world would jump at the chance to become a rider, in L'thor's opinion they would in any case, and it was cruelty to deny them the chance. How terrible would it be to be held back, and to forever wonder if you might have found your dragon if you had been allowed to go?

"Thank you," L'thor said with a brief bow of his head at the offer of a wherry, "she will appreciate that."

Raith rumbled her agreement to this and moved back from the her rider and the others to loft into the air and glide over to the indicated field. She swooped down and caught one of the beasts up and was away again almost before any of them had a chance to panic. "I think I might go inside that spare barn after all," the green said as she landed before it. "I don't fancy a soaking right now." So saying, she carefully lifted down the bar that held the large doors closed and nosed her way inside, careful not to knock the door frame with her wings or tail.

L'thor turned back to Ulen with a smile. "I do hope you don't mind her going in there... I can ask her to come out and find shelter somewhere else if you would prefer." Now, he realized, was the time to be polite; he didn't want to hurt Nehren's chances of being released to the Weyr. A moment later, a happy trill cut through the air, and a small blue shape came to alight on L'thor's shoulder. River crooned at his human and nuzzled his face, sending him images of food he'd been given, and shells he had collected and stored somewhere in L'thor's weyr. It had been a good day, but he was happy to be back with his human, and this new place was interesting!

"Ah," L'thor smiled and stroked the flitt's head fondly, "this is River, he's happy to meet you all." River trilled happily and sat up taller on L'thor shoulder to peer about, paying special attention to the other flitt present.

Ulan nodded, “ah that’s fine, we havn’t got any beasts here, not till the grazing gets good again.” he pointed out, and indeed the grass and plants had been cropped so short by hungry mouths that it was down to much and dirt, quickly turning to more mud as the rain got heavier. And the barn would be warm and dry, a few other farmers would now be rounding up the last of the farm stock into the other barns and shelters to protect them from the storm.

They sold things at the hold only for things that they couldn’t grow, raise or catch themselves. Otherwise everything was exchanged and traded within the small community fairly, and for the most part this worked for them, so it remained a peaceful and for the most part secluded area. And from the ground it was hard to see any other show off human habitation.

The group was lead back between the trees to the houses, single story and simple affairs, a few with herb and vegetable patched of there own and an old stone well which had become slightly overgrown. The others all separated into their homes and Ulan and Nehren lead L’thor to their own house, one of the biggest in the small huddle of buildings but nothing else to mark it’s significance. The rain was starting to lash down harder now, the kind of biting rain driven by wind that cut through even water proof clothes like miniature daggers and soaked hair to rats tails.

Inside the house though the fire was already on, having smoked down to cinders and licks if flame in their absence but a few coals added and it was son blazing warmly again. Flick had flow off the mans shoulder and was hovering round River. Circling and chirping curiously as soon as they were inside andout of the rain. After all the Flitt didn’t get to see other fire lizards on a regular basis seeing he was the only one that was resident to the community. Nehren smiled softly watching him. Flick tried to act high and mighty but he was really quite playful and couldn’t hide his curiousness with the other.

But Ulan motioned him to the fire pot and understanding Ren filled three mugs with warm Klah and set it down on the table, Ulan taking a seat and inviting the rider to take another for himself. “well it seems you have made your mind up Ren and even if the thought worries me I won’t stop you, If you are still determined to leave go pack lad.” he advised his voice heavy but resigned to the fact he would be loosing his son.

Ren beamed and hurried into his room that he had previously shared with Mikel to do so. All he had really were clothes and a few treasured but worthless trinkets.

Ulan then turned to the rider and his gaze was hard. “Look Rider,” he growled “I can’t stop Ren going with you , but if my boy gets hurt or killed because of this I’ll take you and your dragons head are we clear? Better he get passed over at the hatching than have his heart eaten through with thread. ”

He understood the protectiveness, but that didn't mean he appreciated the threat to his dragon's head, or his own come to that; he rather liked it where it was. Nevertheless, he ignored it; he vaguely remembered hearing his father and uncle growling similar things at the rider who had come to take him away. "All I can give you is my assurance that I will do my best to look out for him," L'thor said with a nod as he took the seat and cup of klah indicated to him. "This is good," he complimented as he sipped the brew. "Mostly the stuff we get at the Weyr is made up in bulk, and it's just not quite the same."

River meanwhile had hopped off L'thor's shoulder and was making an inspection of the house, with due deference to the resident, larger flitt of course. A firm pressure on his excitable little mind from L'thor discouraged him from trying to make off with anything, and so he contented himself with exploring. L'thor was quite happy to let him cause mischief at the Weyr, but this was a rather different situation. Last thing he needed was for his little friend to steal something from Nehren's family.

"Raith thanks you for the use of your barn," L'thor added as his dragon nudged at his mind, "and she says she'll look out for Nehren as well." They'd both taken to the gangly boy really quite well, L'thor considered. Nehren had the makings of a great rider, he was sure. What colour would suit the lad, he wondered? That was always a fun guessing game, and as many bets were made on what Candidates would get what colour as what was withing each egg around hatching time.
