Corine smiled as he spoke; she could hear the love he had for his family in his voice. His family seemed so large. Corine wanted that one day. A large family, but not one that was over run with foals. Just a nice mate, maybe some half siblings if her father met a nice mare, and some foals. She just had Gaspard and her father, and her herd mates now. She really did hope she'd find a nice stallion for her mate.

Her head tilted to the side as Bairn mentioned that one of his sisters was mated to a Kalona. "Your sister... Artemis, was it? -- is mated to a Kalona? That must be an interesting pairing," said the mare, commenting on it. She wasn't friends with Kalona, and tried to keep it that way, but she supposed that Kalona taking grounded mates was rare. Didn't they have like a hate for everything except their own kind and those vile pelted Skinwalkers?

Large families were good since there was so much love to go around but they could, and Bairn knew this, also be slightly bad. A good example would be if someone were to run into a soquili they never met before, come to find out said soquili was their niece's child. How many other soquili roamed the land that you were not aware of? How many others didn't know you existed?

It was all just confusing, interesting when said soquili was found, but confusing. Luckily Bairn hadn't met a ton of his extended family yet but he knew they existed. Word from various familiars, including his own, who would tell him of the births.

He smiled when Corine questioned Artemis's choice in mate. At first that was his thought too, but as his years grew in age he learned not to be so foolish. "It is, but Thestral is kind. You know, there are a vast number of Kalona's out there who aren't as vicious as one might think. Sure they eat meat, sure they kill but they are still capable of falling in love. My sister and her mate were meant for each other, whether he liked it or not."

Remembering all the Kalona he met in the past, that sentence really didn't seem to bring out the real truth, but he didn't say much more. All the Kalona's he met were rude, but they didn't attack him, they didn't threaten him. He learned that Kalona's know their place, Skinwalkers may be a completely different story but eh, there were tolerable Kalona's out there.

"Take Windflame Bloodrider for example. Nice guy. Friendly. Taught me a lot about my decisions in life. Heard he went absolutely crazy and is now an insane bloodthirsty lunatic but that's not the point. He wasn't always that way." Bairn smiled, wondering how she would take to his description of his longtime 'friend'.

At first, Corine stared wide eyed at him. Her mind tried to comprehend what he'd said, and when if failed, she just gave up trying. "That's rather... um, interesting...? That probably wasn't the right word... uh..." she said, faulting at what to say. She grinned sheepishly, and would have scratched her neck if she'd the limb to do it with.

"I'm glad she's happy. I think that's what matters most," said the mare, giving him a small smile. To be happy... that was her hope. If she could be stronger than her mother, and stay with her young, she wanted to be happy with her mate. Very happy.

Oh so perhaps not the best reaction, but he honestly expected nothing less. Bairn believed strongly that Kalona's were misinterpreted by everyone who thought they were 100% deemed evil. Hell, they acted just like he did sometimes....the only difference was, they ate meat!

Others could say that he was just being ignorant of reality, but whatever...he didn't care what they thought. Thestral was living proof not all Kalonas are evil creatures. "It's fine. Interesting is a good word, it takes a lot of thought."

He grinned back at her, acknowledging the awkwardness that his words provided for the poor mare. "Yes, it is. Happiness is really the only thing that matters. Love and happiness. True love will last through anything. True love is true happiness, so yes I'd have to agree with you!" He knew what it felt like to be 'happy', but he didn't know what it felt like to have true love. A few months ago and Bairn would have told you he found true love, but that wasn't the case, he just found another reason to grow up.

Another chapter in his book.

So he knew that his true happiness was still out there, somewhere. Waiting for him to sweep her off her feet like a knight. Well, if they expected that they had another thing coming. But heck, if his true love was out there, she was supposed to love him no matter what.

Especially for his imperfections.

"Tell me about your brother and father then, Corine. What are they like? I for one have never known what it's like to have 1 parent and 1 sibling. I find small families fascinating."

Corine smiled, and flicked her tail. "Well, Gaspard and me have always been close. He went off on adventure when we were foals, leaving me with my father and my mother. He's a little on the reserved, detached side of things, much like our dad. While he was away, our mom decided to run away with another stallion, I presume. Dad was always a little more guarded after that happened. They are my only family, and my life. I would do anything for my brother, including inspecting prospective mates," she said, chuckling a bit. "Gaspard is the only one who I can be my real opinionated self around, at least at the moment. My father raised me by himself till Gaspard came home, and him and I went off traveling. I owe my father a lot because of that. I love him with all my heart." Corine gazed off at the horizon for a moment. She wondered where Gaspard was now, and who he'd befriended or fell for. She worried that her father would always just be the lost, guarded stallion who never truly got over her mother. She hoped not.

Corine really wanted her father to find himself a nice mare, one that wouldn't disappear this time.

"As for a small family, its really nice. Me, Dad, and Gaspard are really close, despite our rather... stoic and detatched personalities."

He nodded as he listened, taking in every word. Sounded like a real family, a part from the whole mother-thing, but it was her loss. She was the idiot. "I'm sorry about your mother, I really am. It probably killed your father more not that he lost a mate but that his children lost their mother. It still kills me, but mine are grown and gone, long before she left."

Following suit in her chuckle, he let out a small one when she spoke of her brother's choices in mates. "And you're his sister! Imagine when you get a mate, he will probably turn into a blood-thirsty beast! Not literally, I presume, just figuratively. Just don't bring home any losers, or any hot-shots. I know that's what the mares are going for these days though. The young, conceded stallions." He made a face of disgust, for he knew he hardly stood a chance in getting a pretty young mate. The kind of ideal mate. Might as well go for the older, washed up ones.

Hey, though there was nothing wrong with an older mare. But for Bairn, he always like the younger ones. They were a lot easier to deal with. A LOT easier. "It's good you and your brother are so close. It's good to know you have at least one creature in this world willing to die for you. Uh, that is, IF he is." Bairn stammered, "and your father probably loves you. Why did you leave him? Is it just because you grew up and wanted to explore the world on your own? Sorry, I am asking as a father...I know I too am a son, but my Mother and Father don't live together....they live in different teepees they hardly ever see each other. So my Mother didn't want me to spend all my time with her....she wanted me happy."

That got him thinking, as to whether or not his Mother truly cared that all her kids save for one took off never to be seen again. Mahiri wasn't the type of mare to honestly care, she always let others make decisions for herself, but did it sadden her? Most likely yes considering it saddened Bairn that his own took off.

Ack, that meant a visit to Mother was a necessary thing now.

"No matter the personality, a family member will always love you! I imagine the 3 of you are closer than I am to any of mine. Just because it's only been the 3 of you. I've had many, many shoulders to lean on."

And BOY did those shoulders help.

Corine shrugged a bit, shaking her head. "It was my mother's choice. I'm sure it did... though he hid it well from me." Her father had always been one to dote on her much more than on Gaspard, and that may have kept him from showing so much pain to her.

"Trust me, I don't need flashy males. Someone who is kind, simple, and is fine with me rambling from time to time and seeing my eyes glaze over will work perfectly. And one who will love me, not just use me to increase the blood line." Much like you would, I'd assume, Bairn, she added silently, much to her own surprise. Yes, there were probably a bunch of stallions who could sweep her off her feet with their words and appearance. But Corine didn't need any of that. And age didn't matter, so long as they weren't so young they were foolish. Maybe an older mate would be nice...

The mare raised an eyebrow. "Why does a young sparrow leave the nest? Why do cubs separate from their mothers and wander off on their own? I grew up, Bairn. I wanted to see the world, and I wanted to spend time with Gaspard, who was already on his own journey. My father, too, wanted me happy, and to go off into the world would do that. He knows, as I do, that we'll see each other again. We are bound by blood, we can not be far apart forever." Corine gave him a knowing smile and gazed back off into the horizon. She thought for a moment, and turned back to him, her mouth in a smirk.

"Besides... my would-be-mate has to get past Gaspard, and my father," Corine chuckled, nodded with his last statement. "That we are."
