Big miserable eyes stared up at Orpheus from the bubbles and floaties. Her arms had jerked up, partially out of the water, and the high plastic water-wings pressed roughly up against her cheeks.
"I don't think I can swim," said Emi amidst of a burbling voice. Her fingers wriggled, arms strained to get her head fully above water like she'd seen people do before - treading water was supposed to be easy! "I- I feel off balance."

Orpheus reached a hand out to take one of Emi's in his, lifting her up so that she wouldn't risk breathing in any water, not wanting her to get scared or hurt, "You said you feel off balance?" He looked at Emi's wings in a thoughtful manner, "I wonder if you should open them up so that you get more surface area while trying to float or if you should try keeping them tight to your back." It was always a little tough helping a child to learn a skill when he lacked the same limbs that they had.
"How about you try both of those out, see which feels more natural to you. You can hold onto my hand while you do so that you don't go under again if you like."

"My arms are up like this," Emi wriggled her fingers in demonstration, face stricken with her own frustration. Orpheus' hand in hers made the little girl twitch and she said nothing, did not pull away. She craned her head back to stare at the offending appendages - Emi hated those things. They made dancing harder, running harder and then she couldn't even swim properly without them getting in her way.
The swan sniffed in her frustration, eyes glazing. She shook her head and gingerly took her hand away from Orpheus. Swans swam with their wings pressed tight to their sides. Emi took a deep breath, squeezed her eyes shut, and pulled her wings in like a vice. Air and water squeezed out from between the feathers and her back, where they would've been trapped.
She didn't sink as expected: Emi bobbed, a little white thing going up and down in the water. She blinked quickly, looking down at herself.
"... Does. Does this count?"

Orpheus gave her a smile as she seemed to be quite determined, not letting it bother her that she hadn't gotten it on her first try and she instead changed her tactics and tried again. He was quite pleased to see that this time around she was able to keep from sinking under again. In fact the way that she bobbed up and down was a good thing.
"Yes, that is much better!" He praised her, giving a clap of his hands, "I would say that yes, it does counts quite well. I think that with a bit of practice you will be able to get swimming figured out." Provided that she wanted to learn the skill for more then just a grade that was.
