Both boys brightened at Kaimi's idea. "Yeah!" Joshua said happily. "We'll be princes pretending to be knights!" It was a great plan! "But who will be the bad guy?" It couldn't be Vinny or Kaimi, and it certainly wasn't him.

Little did Josh know that a real "Bad guy" was lurking in their back yard. Jacen the dark elf was hiding behind one of the large rose bushes. Unfortunately for him, his navy skin tone did not blend in with the pale green leaves of spring.

"How about..." Kaimi was out of practice with the whole pretend thing. "How about I'm the princess, but I'm also secretly an evil witch and I only pretended to be kidnapped so that you'd rescue me and I could curse you!" It seemed like a good idea to her, if a bit convoluted. A flash of dark blue flickered at the edges of her vision from out the window, but she paid it no mind for the time being.

Josh would have agreed with Kaimi, but at that moment he was distracted. "That looks like Uncle Vate, almost.." He was saying. "Maybe we should let him in..."

The dark elf was indeed, trying to get inside the house. He was banging on the sliding glass door that was used to get to the garden in the spring and summer.

Vinny shook his head. "Mom said not to let anyone inside." He reminded Josh. "And Uncle Vate's spending the day with Nataya's mom. Remember?"

Glancing over at the sliding glass door, Kaimi frowned. "Boys, why dont you go upstairs to your rooms and find costumes?" She asked quietly, being careful to keep her voice calm and neutral. "I'll get the door and let him know your mom is busy, alright?" Something about this wasn't right and she wanted those boys upstairs where they'd be safer. Just in case. Although it was more likely that the person at the door was perfectly harmless and she was just suffering residual paranoia.

Without another word, the boys ran upstairs. Joshua didn't think much of getting a costume, he was going to tell his mother. "Mom!" He called. "Someone's trying to get inside!"

He succeeded in waking his father up, but Thali was another story. "Whazzat?" Ben asked sleepily. "Someone trying to get inside?" Thali had told him what the elves might do if they ever found their home in Barton, but he hadn't expected this. He hadn't believed her. "Stay up here." He told the boys, standing up and going to fetch a bat. He walked down stairs silently as he could.

When the boys went upstairs, Kaimi went to the sliding glass door and looked up at the dark blue elf who was trying to get in. She had to look up at everyone, she was so short. "Can I help you?" She asked through the glass, for some reason not feeling right about opening the door with him beating on it the way he was.

"Kaimi, get away from the door." Ben said, as he spotted the teenager. He was clearly trying to appear calm, and failing. "Get upstairs!" He went to the sliding glass door, narrowing his eyes, bat in hand. "Stay away from my wife." He snapped through the glass. "She's happy here. Leave her alone!"

Jacen didn't seem to be listening. His hands kept going at the handle, apparently trying to yank it open. "The princess needs to return." The elf hissed angerily. "She must fullfil her duty."

The dark-skinned girl's eyes widened and she backed away. Not upstairs as she'd been told but into the kitchen where she had left her backpack. Inside her fire-staff was laying, dismantled into two pieces. It wasn't terribly heavy because the girl wasn't terribly strong. But she was very good at wielding it for dancing purposes and she wasn't about to be unprotected. Screwing the two halves together, she clutched the staff and peered surreptitiously around the corner into the living room to see what was going on.

By the time Kaimi returned, Ben was on the floor, unconscious. You could tell, because his chest was rising slowly, up and down. The sliding glass door had been forced open. Jacen shook his head before heading towards the stairs.

"Foolish mortal." He muttered, before catching sight of Kaimi. "You.." He started, "You look helpful. Where is the Princess?"

Kaimi scowled. "If you're talking about Thali, she isn't here. She went grocery shopping. I'm the babysitter." She held her staff like a baseball bat, frowning. At least the lie came easily enough that she was believable. "You'd better leave, mister. You're breaking and entering and I'm gonna call the cops." Her knuckles were white on the staff. The man had taken Ben down. Kaimi didn't stand a chance. Even with Vinny and Josh helping - and she didn't want them to get put in danger. She just wanted him to go away.

The dark elf narrowed his eyes. "They told me she would be here..." He muttered. He paused, and looked at Kaimi. "You'll have to do, I suppose. Bait. She's always been fond of children..." He reached to grab her arm.

"Don't worry. As soon as the Princess returns, you will be free to go." Not a very good reassurance, but at least the elf was trying.

"Hey!" She tried to tug out of his grasp, panic lacing her voice. Seriously? This could not seriously be happening again. Kaimi did her best to aim a blow at his head and a kick to his groin, hoping something would land. She was not going to go without a fight.

The dark elf cried out in pain, perhaps this was what caused Thali to walk downstairs. "Kaimi? Are you alright?" She asked, sounding tired. As if she had just woken up. "I heard something and..." She swore in elvish.

She had just spotted the elf, who was holding a hand to his head. "Ah! Princess!" Jacen said with a mock bow. "I am glad to see you have safely returned from your quest. But why do you come empty handed?" He frowned as he realized he'd been tricked. Thali had been home the entire time!

Kaimi raised her little staff threateningly. She was unlikely to be able to do much damage, but seeing him on the floor in pain cheered the girl to no end. She'd gotten him down which made her feel strong and capable. "He broke into the house and beat up Ben." She explained to Thali. "He was looking for you so I told him you'd gone shopping." Since Thali was here now, there was no sense in continuing to lie.

Thali could only nod at Kaimi, showing her approval in the lie. She liked this teenager-- even though it hadn't worked. Ben couldn't be seriously injured, or she would have felt it. It was better for him to be knocked out now, anyway. This was too dangerous.

"Jacen, why are you here?" She asked, her tone was calm, but she said it with such a glare that the dark elf flinched. "Why are you frightening these children?"

"Ay, princess.." Jacen started, the scowl fading from his face. He went on to explain that though he knew the king had said she could stay in Barton, the kingdom needed her.
