For the first time in her short life Never was literally frozen in fear. Her jaw opened in a kind of awe as it's yellow eyes fixed on them. Adrieal had the sense to crawl away, but Never did not. It wasn't until Adrieal cried out that the spell on her was broken. Suddenly she could move again and she scrambled, trying to hide herself against the roots of the tree. But it was too late; the bird already knew that she was there. Even her dark colouration wouldn't help her.
The next thing she heard was a horrible whoosh of air. She looked up to see talons coming straight towards her. The eagle was in a controlled fall; though it couldn't spread it's wings easily in the lower branches it could still use them to slow itself. Nevermore screamed and bounded forward a second too late and the eagle pinned her down.
"L-LEMME GO!" The bird pecked at her ears and Nevermore felt something tear. She squirmed, glad in a way that she was pinned on her belly so that the eagle could not rip her open. Quickly the raptor grew tired of playing with her and lifted up one of it's claws and started pushing on her side, trying to flip her over. It was then Never took her chance. She twisted and bit down as hard as she could on a toe. It let out a shriek and jumped off of her, giving her enough time to scramble back to her paws and run for her life.

Adrieal had never prided himself on being courageous or, for that matter, very chivalrous either. Without so much as a glance back to check on Nevermore, the pup fled as fast as his paws could take him. He coudl hear the girl's screams and the hawk's squawks, yet he was incapable of slowing down. For a moemnt, heart pounding even harder, Adrieal thought she'd been eaten, but he was proven wrong quickly as he heard an extra set of pawsteps catching up. Shame flushed his pale face as he called out, "Th-This way!" and veered to the side, away from the river and deeper into the forest.

Nevermore didn't look back at the eagle, her survival instinct telling her to run until she couldn't run anymore. She hoped that it wouldn't follow... weren't birds daytime creatures? She couldn't think of a time when she might have seen a bird flying at night, except for one ghostly shape which she would later learn was an owl.
Pricking her ears to catch where Adrieal had called from, she hissed when pain rewarded the motion. Well, she would have time to figure out why once they found safety. She turned from the river and fled deeper into the forest after Adrieal, feeling something warm trickle into her ear canal.
It wasn't until her breath was positively ragged that Never tried to speak to him. "Do you think it's following us?" she managed to croak, wanting so bad to rest. If only she had stayed in the packlands... then she wouldn't be in this predicament in a strange part of a forest with this strange male pup.

"D-D-Dunno . . ." His stuttering worsened from the lack of air, and the pale-faced pup was force to slow to a halt and lean against a young sapling of a tree, sides heaving and tongue lolling. He was sure his heart was going to burst ay second now, the amount of stress that was on it now . . . "P-P-Please, p-please, l-l-let us b-b-be s-s-s-s-s-s-s . . ." And his words refused to form and had him despair further, not allowing him to even utter a prayer against the evil with wings. Oh, how Adrieal whimpered! The only comfort he had was that Nevermore was still with him, and even she could be snatched away from him, literally . . .
A spine! Where was his spine?! At length he caught his breath better, voice still in a hoarse whisper. "M-Maybe if w-w-we're quiet enough, it'll f-fly over us . . ."

If Nevermore hadn't been trying to catch her breath with whimpering gasps herself, she might have paid attention to Adrieal's first attempt to speak. Her eyes flicked around, imagining that the eagle was coming down, down... She sat by the tree with him, shaking like a leaf in the wind. At least she wasn't alone...
She lost track of the seconds ticking by as she slowly began to calm down. Her adrenaline started to ebb off, allowing her to feel the sharp throbbing to the left of her head. "Y-yeah, let's be quiet..." she whispered back, feeling a little ill.
As she spoke a flutter of movement caught her attention near the first few thin branches of the sapling. She almost cried as she realized that it was the sparrow... The same damn sparrow that stalked her during the day. If they were being chased it would surely give them away! Feeling utterly defeated she flopped at the base of the tree, squeezing her eyes shut.

It took what seemed like forever before Adrieal would even hazard so much as a twitch of his ear, and itch bugging him with hellish intensity on his back. As he sat down and slowly went to satisfy it with a few quick swipes of his back paw, the pup noticed that Nevermore seemed to be having a small episode beside him, shutting her eyes as though doing so would make . . . the eagle go away? But surely the bird had flown past . . . Or maybe she had better senses than he did.
"Y-You okay?" Adrieal whispered at length, clear eyes glancing her over worriedly as the strange girl dejectedly inched to the floor. "What's wr-wrong?"

In response to Adrieal's whispering, Never opened an eye just a crack to look at him, but not enough to really see anything around him. She was afraid to see the sparrow fluttering right behind him. After a moment, however, the skies seemed to be lacking any sort of feathered creatures. Finally, she opened her eyes again, and got gingerly back to her paws.
"I'm fine... I'll be fine," she said shortly, shaking off the episode as best as she could. She was so tired... Her head stung, her muscles felt weak and floppy from their flight, and she wanted to go home, for once. It was about time she went home... She had lost track of time, and who knows how far they had fled?
"I think it's safe now. I saw a sparrow, that's all." Her words came out meekly, though she was trying to look confident. "I want to go home now, before my parents wake up..." Never didn't try to cover the worry in her eyes. She didn't want to know what would happen if her mother woke up and she wasn't there. That she would likely be sleeping through the day, sporting the injury to her head, would be suspicious by itself.
Before leaving, she felt like she needed to give Adrieal some direction. Poor pup; she was tempted to invite him too. But she knew it was probably in his best interest that he keep looking for a home. "Why don't you keep going this way? It looks like the eagle is gone. but you can't be too careful, right?" She smiled, forcing cheer. "Maybe you'll find a good place to live." With that Nevermore turned back in the direction of the river, knowing that the water would eventually lead her home. Coaxing her tired paws to carry her forward, the dark little pup disappeared into the shadows of the forest.

A . . . sparrow? Adrieal blinked confusedly as she got up, glancing about and finding no such bird near or around them. Was Nevermore seeing things? Maybe she hallucinated when she was scared too . . . "G-Good idea," he mumbled, not wanting to have packmembers on his head for giving someone's daughter a hardtime - even if the eagle was purely by accident, really! And she stayed courteous enough to even give him a new direction, though the pale-faced pup found that his energy had been quite expended in their escape and could barely do much more than crawl to the tree trunk and nestle himself against it and the bushes for a bed. By the time he turned his head, Nevermore was barely a spot in the distance and quickly being covered up by the foliage.
"E-Er . . . bye . . ." Adrieal said, though he doubted she could hear him now. With that he slipped into troubled dreams of falling from the sky, clouds bursting past him as a shrill cry above him foreboded talons on his back . . .
