With the brown 'lizard situated peacefully on his shoulder, the bluerider would hear nothing of Florian's apologies. "Oh, don't worry about it," M'zaji insisted, but kept his gaze and attention focused on the brown. The bluerider's fingers were skilled at showing affection to any draconic kind~ he had Kaedrelath to practice on! So he found a spot under the jawline that M'zaji knew Kaedrelath enjoyed immensely and began to move his fingers in tiny circles.
"Florian? And Roco? Nice to meet you!" The bluerider responded amiably. He would have offered his hand to the young man, but he was pretty occupied with the firelizard. "Ah, the Hatchings! They should be soon! When you say attend, do you mean as a spectator, or as a candidate?" M'zaji said, and this time turned to look at the Florian squarely. "Forgive me, I haven't introduced myself," he apologized with a little chuckle. "I'm M'zaji, rider of blue Kaedrelath."

Roco's crooning deepened with the bluerider's skilled ministrations, and he all but melted into M'zaji's shoulder line. Watching him, Florian sighed and decided to leave well enough alone... for the moment.
"The honor is mine M'zaji of Blue Kaedrelath, and I had hopes on standing as a candidate, though..." he trailed off again, uncertain of how much of his personal story he really wanted to disclose to a complete stranger, despite how it was eating at him internally. "Ah well, you know how it is when one has Stood before and was left Standing." He finished, managing a half-hearted smile.
Noting his person's change in temperament, Roco peered back at Florian and trilled encouragingly.

M'zaji smiled as Roco crooned with pleasure, leaning into his hand as he worked up and down the brown's jaw bone. He chuckled softly, watching the 'lizard all but melt into his hand and shoulder. The bluerider heard Florian's sigh, and turned to look at the young man.
"I can try and pry him off my shoulder, if you want him back," he said. But, in all honesty, M'zaji was not so sure he could do just that. So, he listened to what Florian had to say, and shot a reassuring smile the young man's way. "I know what it's like to be left standing, yeah," he said simply, nodding. "I'm sure you've heard this before, but, it just means that your dragon wasn't on the Sands that day. If you're supposed to be a Rider, you'll find your dragon sooner or later," M'zaji said, but looking at the young man, he wondered how old he was, and how many times he'd be allowed to stand again.

Moodily, Florian's thoughts all but stopped at M'zaji's words. If you are supposed to be a Rider... They could have sounded like a death knell and hit him harder, but coming from this friendly man.. they just rang of truth. Roco was very dear to him (despite his antics) and having been left Standing twice already (with his 21st birthday fast approaching) Florian knew at the intellectual level that this was his last chance. Between becoming too old and almost too desperate, he really was reaching his emotional level of disappointment. Even Roco reacted to the blue moods of his person with these shows of misbehavior, and to an extent Florian wondered if the situation would resolve itself by Impressing a dragon..or would the pressure in his head just get worse.
Blinking back a uncharacteristic clouding of his eyes, Florian finally managed to smile hesitantly at the bluerider and nod. "Yeah, I've heard it before, and I fall for it every time, pardon the pun." He said, his tone not as cheerful as he wanted, but at least Roco wasn't looking at him with concern.. so hopefully he wasn't being terribly obvious with his depression. "This'll be the last time though, I'm a journeyman so I should be able to jump back into service at the Healer Hall with little trouble." That was stretching the truth, he may be good at studying, but returning from the year long sabbatical was probably going to be harder on his mind then his whole time spent as an apprentice.
