"A secret?!" Zinnia said excitedly. She dropped her spoon into her bowl with a clank as she leaned closer to listen to the secret. Zinnia never got told secrets any more. The people around the base were not like Zinnia's friends from before she joined, but now she could finally get in on a secret!
Shadow Mew, still invisible, also came a little closer to hear. She did not come near enough to be touched by Dr. Mason, but her sensitive ears were enough to make up for the distance.

The doctor smiled, completely oblivious to the mew's presence. Still, he chose his words wisely. "Well, it just so happens that I am a geneticist who works with the DNA of Pokemon. I sometimes consider myself an artist of sorts, mixing what genes I have to create wonderfully powerful Pokemon that could never appear naturally."
Dr. Mason sighed. "Sadly, I have been lacking the fund necessary to really get into my research. Sitting around at a desk all day staring at a screen and trying to find just the right data files is horribly boring. Plus, it's extremely difficult to create DNA from raw base pairs, let alone actually making the base pairs from scratch. It doesn't help that the unique physiology of Pokemon that allows them to evolve is still not understood very well. Ah, but all this science talk must be boring you!" Dr. Mason got up. "Anyway, I am afraid I must return to my lab. Genes won't go finding themselves, after all!"
The Doctor turned to leave, then turned back toward Zinnia. "I do hope you've enjoyed yourself, Zin! May we meet again. Perhaps your Mew will be in a more amiable mood then, as well."

"Uh, wait!" Zinnia said, getting up and taking the plastic bowl of ice cream with her. "Maybe we can help after all," Zinnia insisted, knowing that Shadow Mew was there. Zinnia clutched Dr. Mason's arm so he couldn't get away. "What do you mean by new pokemon? Why couldn't they appear in nature? Will your research help the pokemon in the future?"
Shadow Mew, on the other hand, was horrified. Before, she thought that the man merely wanted to do research on her genes, which was understandable for most any scientist. A Mew's DNA was very rare and said to contain the DNA of all the other pokemon in existence. But... This was just awful. Dr. Mason was creating pokemon, like some Rockets and scientists had created Mewtwo. Those projects had gone all wrong, but still people cloned mews into mewtwos. And now this doctor was trying to create even more unnatural and powerful beings? And he wanted to use her DNA to do it?!
Shadow Mew had to suppress the urge to blast the Doctor away from Zinnia right then and there. Instead, she spoke telepathically into Zin's mind alone. < Zinnia, get away from him. He must be insane to do such terrible research! >
Zinnia blinked and gave the air a questioning look. What had gotten into Shadow Mew? She normally seemed emotionless... What about Dr. Mason had shaken her up so much?

The Doctor sighed, then grinned. "I think I've said too much already. Let us say that this afternoon was most informative for me, and that you may end up being one of the people rewarded by my research. But," Dr. Mason chimed in a mysterious, almost sinister way, "you have to keep it a secret, alright, Zin?" The Doctor gave his best impression of a father withholding a secret present from his daughter.

"Oh, okay..." Zinnia sighed. "I'll see you later, then, Dr. Mason!" She flashed a smile and a wave before skipping back into the ice cream shop to eat her concoction.
Shadow Mew remained at the exit, watching the man wish narrowed eyes. Just who exactly was Dr. Mason...?
