Would you change the finale?
  Definitely! 100% rewrite.
Yeah, I'd tweak a thing or two.
  No way - it's perfect.
What difference does it make? :/

I though, "Aww, that's not so bad - pretty sunset, cute hug. Subtle and age-appropriate." And then it zoomed back in and they made-out. o.O

I agree! I could have dealt with that part if the make out scene hadn't been thrown in like that! Aang's like a middleschooler! A simple hug would have sufficed or the two of them gazing at the sunset would have worked too.
in some places he'd still be in elementary school. he's like what? 11? 12? that's 6th grade. when my niece was in 6th grade, she was an elementary schooler.
Either way, it still seems pretty unreasonable. I mean, I know things have gone a bit crazy and there's probably elementary kids having sex now, but that doesn't mean it's okay for ATLA and its creators to buy into the over-sexualization of everything else. I think it would've been better to show that, "Hey, they're still young. They should take things slow and have an innocent relationship." Playing tonsil-hockey with your first girlfriend at age twelve doesn't seem like the most positive image they could be sending out. :/

Agreed so much. gonk At first, when I saw that scene, I though, "Aww, that's not so bad - pretty sunset, cute hug. Subtle and age-appropriate." And then it zoomed back in and they made-out. o.O

I didn't really understand why they needed to put the whole Ba Sing Se part there anyway, I always thought it would've been a little better if they ended the show right after Zuko asks Ozai where Ursa is. There wasn't much need for it except maybe to fill time.

Also agreed. I think they did it further 'prove' that Zutara and other ships 'would never happen'. By having Aang and Katara kiss, rather than just having subtle hinting, they sort of eliminated other possibilities (though, we fans find ways around this. 8D)

Personally, I would've preferred a heart-warming reunion between Zuko and Ursa. :/ Would've felt a bit more final and important (and it would've taken care of one of the many 'wtf?' moments).

Honestly I think the last half of the movie is pretty much a complete do over with the excetption of the battle scenes. Those were cool. But the lionturtle, the who anti-climatic ending to Ozai and Aang's battle, the OTB reunion of Zuko and Mai, that slopplily placed and creepily Oedipal Kataang kiss...yeah, where's the re-do button when you need it? But luckily there's fanfiction ^_^.

The battle with Azula? yeah, Katara dies. that's how I'd change it. If you look at my RP, you can see exactly how I changed it.

But Katara would die in Zuko's arms...like...

((Azula screams in the background, chained to the grate. Zuko lays in the middle of the arena while Katara staggers to him, to slow to dodge one of Azula's attacks.))

Katara lies down next to Zuko, panting heavily as blood puours from a wound.

K: Hey...

Z: katara?

K: Good luck, running the world...

Z: Katara? Katara! No no no don't leave!

K: you'll make...a good king, Mai*cough hack bleed* will be, happy.

Z: No, Katara, I don't want her...i want...I want you...Katara!

((Katara dies, and Zuko is captured sometime later, holding tight to her corpse and weeping. He is executed by his family for treason.))

and that's my finale. tragic and sweet.

Agreed with much said in this thread! Also, Violetta, that would be tragic, but I'm sometimes a fan of tragic.

Anywho...what I'd change....

1. Of course, lets just get it out of the way first...AANG. He lost nothing. He decided nothing. He progressed nowhere. First, he got anxiety over killing things. Seriously? After 3 seasons of battling, going apeshit in the AS and potentially killing several Fire Nation/Dai Li/Whoever else, NOW, he's getting anxiety of killing the most evil bugger of them all?? I can understand the whole Monk mentality, but Continuity is awesome. If this were to be one of his little bothers, I personally think it should have been set up ages ago.
Lion-Turtle. WTF, really? It's obvious they were planning on him from mid-book 2, why not give a little more hint? Draw him in a little better so it doesn't look so out of place!
Mary-Sue powers. Seriously, spirit bending?? Like I said, Draw it into the story better. It was just horribly out of place and literally like Aang pulled it out of his a**. I get the kind of thing they were going for, with the spirits keeping order before the Avatar or whatever, but Jeez. It had less foreshadowing than the Lion-Turtle.
Most importantly, the Easy-Button has GOT to go. It was a giant loophole and a cop out. Aang didn't even intentionally use it, it just happened, when he was being blasted from his little hidey-hole of a rock. He just ran away and dodged the entire fight until the easy button did the job for him.
He made no thought to giving Katara up, which was carefully and repeatedly outlined. He gave no thought to his behaviour...especially when he'd just yelled at everyone...AGAIN...earlier in the movie. He had no repurcussion for being a little brat, nor did he sit down, think about it and say, hey, I was wrong, I'll do better next time. I mean, it's not even so much about letting Katara go, it's about him being a little brat for much of the show and never owning up. I hate that.

2. Shipping. Seriously, when they zoomed out from the hug, I thought it was done. I thought it was over, and the book had lied, and the creators had picked a very artful and beautiful way to get their point across and end the show, even if it was Kataang. But then it zoomed back in, and there was that horrid kiss. Honestly, I would have been FINE with just the hug. Even though there was Maiko floating around and it was still Katara and Aang, I could have accepted a hug for being the beginning of young love and an actual relationship of growth between them. Buuuut, no.
Personally, I would have just left the ending slightly open, with just a small hint of romance to indicate which way I wanted to imply. And Honestly, if it'd ended in Zutara, I'd have liked to see something indicitave of a budding relationship, but not over the top. As how the last episodes of the show turned out, I'm afraid this would have ruled out a kiss, but I don't know. There would have been something, like a look between them(maybe one that could parelell their glances at each other in the cave at Ba Sing Se) or something in the Agni Kai scene that would just set it off.
But 12 year old tonsil hockey would be out of the freakin' question. >.<

3. Toph/Taang...I really thought there was something to that dream in Nightmares and Daydreams. If I had the finale my way, that episode would have actually had significance, and something would have happened to Toph. I don't think I'd want her to get killed, though it would have been a change from the "everybody's on crack happy!" feeling you get from the finale. Something would have happened to Toph, and Aang would have to ignore his thing for Katara and help her. Meanwhle, The Agni Kai would ensue. I'm not even sure how I'd arrange it, but yeah. either way, Toph and Aang would have important stuff going on together.
And as we all know, that, plus Katara and Zuko bonding in the Agni Kai would nudge everything on to a Zutara ending with a hint of possible Taang in their futures.

4. Mai Lee. Mai and Ty Lee should have just stayed together, seriously. They had SUCH a great thing going at the end of TBR, I don't know why the creators didn't just continue it. It was not only an artistic ending for those two, but it brought them closer together. And now Mai's back where she can shower all her attention on Zuko. *bleh* They are split up, and this is not right.
I would have had them at the party...But I'd have Mai see Katara and Zuko, happily together, and be able to read between the lines. But as she grows sad/angry, Ty Lee puts a hand on her shoulder or gives her some gesture, and Mai realizes that it isn't so bad, and at least Zuko is happy.
And thus Ty Lee and Mai skip merrily off into the sunset together.

5. Ozai needs to die. Are you kidding? there are going to be assassination attempts out the rear on Zuko. Ozai no doubt had fellow political whackos on his side. This story really isn't over because of that. I say we give Zuzu a lovely Waterbending body-guard, all in favor?

6. Ursa. NEED I SAY MORE?
Though I heard they're making a new miniseries about Zuko finding her. I don't recall if it was someone here, or on DA, but someone has said that Mike and Bryan's redemption depends on who goes with Zuko to find her. Iroh is neutral territory. He is plain awesomesauce and would be delightful to have more of. Mai would mean their dooms, because it's continuing Maiko and probably the horrid off and on/make-out heavy relationship they have, and if he chooses Katara, well, Mike and Bryan get a few years taken off of their sentence in purgatory. Lol. If it's Aang then what the Hell, I'm so tired of that kid, they die nao. ...If it's Katara AND Aang though...Hmm, that might provide some interesting love triangles...>3 If it's Toph, that'd be random, but kind of cute especially since...

7. Toph should have gotten her field trip with Zuko. D:

8. Nothing ever became of Tokka, one way or the other.

9. Ursa should have been with the White Lotus, IMHO. >(

10. Minor, but I kind of wanted the Prince crown that Iroh gave Zuko to show up again. sad

11. I can't think of a number 11. :0

((Damn, how is it I'm still able to write this much on this subject?!))

You pretty much summed up all my complaints. xD

As far as things like 10 and 8 go, I think where were a lot of inconsistencies in the series, both major and minor. Major is, as you already said, Aang and the whole Chakras/sacrifice/mastering AS, not to mention his issues with killing (why didn't he even think of this in DoBS? He clearly had no apprehension to the idea of killing then). Then there's things like the crown and Ty Lee wanting to stand out - the crown was never so much as mentioned again, and Ty Lee joined a group of uniformed, clone-like girls. Um... What? Seriously, that ticked me off. Ty Lee gets very little attention in the series, so I think the small amount of back story she was given should be kept in mind when writing the sunshine and rainbows ending.

At least we have the re-write, right?

there are some big things and some little things i'd rewrite about the finale. the big things: ozai would die, aang would gain the avatar state consciously by letting go of katara, mai would be let out of prison but be pissed at zuko for leaving her there for so long and they wouldn't get back together, katara would tell aang she just wants to be friends. there would be no lionturtle and no spiritbending, and no fire lord serving tea in the earth kingdom. possibly katara would kiss zuko after healing him. possibly aang would die in the fight with ozai instead of surviving.

the little things:
1. AANG: i can't just go around wiping out people i don't like! SOKKA: but you're not. you're wiping out one guy who's threatening to destroy the entire world. whether or not you like him doesn't even enter into it. your responsibility is to protect the world, and to protect the world, evil people like ozai have to be taken out.
2. AANG: when one of you comes up with a way to defeat the fire lord without taking his life, i'd love to hear it! KATARA/ZUKO/SOKKA/SOMEBODY: well that's not going to happen, because it's not possible. you can't have it both ways, aang. ozai is never going to stop. the only way to defeat him for good IS to take his life. yes, life is a sacred thing, but which is more sacred - the life of one or the lives of millions?
3. SOKKA: *cuts off melon lord's head* AANG: DDDDD8 SOKKA: oh my god, are you serious? IT'S A MELON. quit looking at me like i just disemboweled a kitten.

and nix the stupid shitty-art-effects when katara and suki find "aang" in town. t(e__et)

Your changes are perfect. Especially the dialogue ones - I'm amazed no one screamed back and smacked some sense into him.

On a similar note, I would've loved it if, when Aang said no one knew what it was like to be in his situation (AKA: having the face a serious sacrifice), someone spoke up and said, "Uh, hey, we've all made huge sacrifices, so don't even go there."

Especially if it were Sokka, I mean, come on - he watched his father leave without knowing if he would ever see him again multiple times, he lost Yue, he almost lost Suki, his mom is dead... That's a lot of letting go.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 24, 2009 2:50 pm

well, aang was talking specifically about having another person's life in his hands... which in some ways, is not true, because KATARA had another person's life in her hands (and opted not to kill him, but came damn close to doing it), but in some ways it is true, because none of them has been in the position of having the life of the most evil man on the planet in their hands. of course, if they DID, i'm sure none of them would hesitate to snuff him out, for the good of the world, which is why they were all so "dude wtf is the big deal?" when aang was pissing and moaning about it.

You know, he seems to really forget the fact that he's probably doomed a few hundred (if not thousand) people to their deaths by destroying fire nation ships, baloons, the drill thing, the funny cars that climbed up walls and hills and whatnot. He's already killed people, this is just a bit more up close and personal.

Besides!

Men are murdered.

Dogs are put down.

Good point about the other kids having made sacrifices and having had the power to either kill or let live. Aang throws accusations in the finale like confetti...I mean, Katara for one could have gotten very rightfully pissed off, she held Yan Ra's life in her hands, even Hama's! I would have LOVED to have seen her bite his head off that she's had to make the same choice, and that he needs to take the same responsibility that they all have, and that he shouldn't be so quick to say that none of them know where he's coming from.

Also, I'll point out that Zuko could have just let Zhao, one of his biggest rivals, die in season 1, but he still tried to save him(From Aang, no less).

I think the problem is that all of them grew up in war, they know what it takes, they know that war is all about and you have to make tough choices. Aang grew up as a monk in a time of peace.

exactly. in fact, none of the previous avatars, with the possible exception of kyoshi, had been confronted with the same situation aang was. and yet when kyoshi had to deal with a maniacal dictator bent on world domination, she did what she had to do to protect her people, and didn't flinch when the man's own stupidity cost him his life. i love when aang draws a distinction between killing ozai and chin bringing about his own death by his own actions, and kyoshi says "personally i don't see the difference." there is no difference. death is death, and while ozai's not standing on a cliff ledge, he DID make choices for which the logical conclusion at the hands of retributive (is that a word?) avatar is death.
