Eyes closed and mentally prodding at his own uncertainties Darkside did not immediately catch the blush or even the elevated level of nervousness that radiated from Pearl for a moment. Her comment about him being her "bestest" friend did in fact cause the corner of his mouth to twitch in the beginning of a smile. It warmed a cold place inside of himself that he hadn't truly been aware of before. But it was after that, when her utterance about love echoed so closely his own thoughts not a moment before that he cracked his eyes open and honestly took notice of Pearl's slightly agitated state.
And she had something she felt she needed permission to ask him about? Though there were clues scattered about that he normally would have been able to pick up and piece together at the moment his mind seemed befogged and muddled, refusing to fully function, and though the realization that there might be more to this conversation than he had originally though was creeping up on him it would not likely arrive in time to rescue him from putting his foot in his mouth due to suprise if Pearl did in fact queery him about his feelings and/or admit her own.

She wasn't sure how to say it any other way other than to say it straight out. Even so, she couldn't help but feel nervous about this. Any normal being with feelings and the faintest grasp of love would understand. But to Pearl it was different. Darkside was different. It could be said about many couples, but to her he was different...dare say...they were different.
At first she was a shy, socially anxious little pearl lost in the vast ocean of strangers, but thanks to him she warmed up a bit to most and even started trusting strangers. They were baby steps, but she was proud of those steps and thought of them as giant leaps instead. Perhaps he too, was proud of her accomplishments thus far.
I know...You are my friend...And I am yours...But I wanted to know...Just how...you felt about me...? Her eyes adverted from his, staring intently at the ground. For a moment all she could hear was the pounding beats of her heart as she waited for his answer.

It actually felt as though his mind froze for a moment when she finally uttered what it was she wanted to know, and it was the turning away of her gaze that got it moving again with a mental sensation that was both like being burned and having a bucket of cold water dumped atop him all at once.
She wanted to know... SHE wanted to know? Pearl was... Did Pearl have feelings for him? -I...- He blinked slowly, certain that were he a normal kitsusagi he would be blushing furiously and stuttering up a storm. -I was just thinking that over, actually...-
What should he say? What, indeed, could he say? She had asked a question and he had promised an answer, and he would always do his best to give her as honest and complete an answer as he could.
-I... love you, little Pearl. It is akward for me... not because of you. As I said earlier... I have little experience with such things. Before I came here I did not really have the option to have so much as a friend, much less more. Before I met you I did not actually realize what it was I was missing in that regard...- It was his turn then to stare at the floor, tapping his talons somewhat nervously on the surface. A second chance at a life he found he truly wanted seemed to be staring him in the face and yet a part of him worried it would vanish like some fractured beam of light... beautiful for its one moment of glory but forever after just a memory.
Still... he had to reach for it at least a little. -But... why do you ask, little Pearl?-

Her heart seemed as if it would burst out of her chest from nervousness as she clung onto each one of his words carefully. It always seemed uncertain to her that Darkside felt anything more than just friendship with her. He would protect anyone in need of his help. The proof was the time when he helped the little Lupin femme when she was here with the large Nitemare.
Um...well... She wasn't entirely sure how to answer his question after all he said. It might be obvious to other normal Kitsus she felt the same way about him, but to the two of them, especially to Pearl it was much less obvious. Like you said...You are my first...and bestest friend in the whole wide world...as you know...I don't have many...friends...And I'm really...appreciative of your friendship...But um...Is it...Is it okay if...if I love you...?
Most would not ask for permission when it came to these types of things. Love was simply something that happened, permission granted or not. Though to Pearl it seemed like something that needed permission, kind of like going outside when it came to small children. Only this kind of permission was much more grand.

No, most would not think they had to ask permission for that sort of thing, but he found it warmed him in that way only Pearl seemed to and he found it incredibly endearing. But to think that she would want to! Perhaps... anything really was possible in this place. All that really mattered right now, however, was Pearl.
He shifted himself forward a bit and tucked the foreleg that was on Pearl's side of himself back against his chest, allowing the one facing the room to stretch out. He then reached over to gently nuzzle her paw with his nose before resting his head on the floor next to it. -Of course it is all right, little Pearl. And it... makes me happy.-

Even though Pearl would shrink away from the slightest touch from anyone, the moment she and Darkside shared was more precious to her than shrinking away in fear. In fact, there was no reason for her to shrink away from fear. He was her first and best friend, and he always will be that and more. His touch had a certain warmth to it...a warmth that warmed her very heart.
Shortly after his nuzzle, she lifted her paw lightly and softly petted him on the head. His fur felt cool and sort of...illusive? It was as if it was there, but not entirely there at the same time. The feeling was weird but somewhat comforting too. She liked this feeling...of touching and close contact.

It was strange. It was nice. And all the confusion and unsurety and inability to pinpoint what it was he'd felt like he'd been missing so much seemed to just melt away when Pearl reached up to pet him. For a moment, for this moment, he was happy and content and there was no other thing in the world that seemed as if it could be greater than just being here with her.
It also decided some other things for him in regards to why he'd been sent here and who he'd been sent by. Mostly that he was going to follow through with throwing all of that aside. For now... he would just be, and do it with Pearl.
His wings stretched once, a slow motion of down and back up to rest once more where they had been in the fashion of a butterfly. -This is... nice.- Part of him wanted to move to where he could curl up beside her, but he was unsure if she would be ready for that even with what had just transpired. He could ask, but he didn't want her to feel obligated to aquiesce if she was not yet comfortable with the idea. Perhaps if he worded it properly?...
-Would you be comfortable if I sat next to you, little Pearl, or would you rather stay like this?... Either would be fine with me. This is actually rather relaxing.- In fact... between the petting and the sudden relief of the day's mental tension, he was about as close to "sleepy" as a shadow-creature could be.
