Orli squeaked momentarily and hid behind her taller friend. Slowly, she looked at the witch again. She didn't look like she had any Star-cutting knives hidden anywhere.
"Okay," said Orli, a bit hesitant.

The witch smiled, revealing missing teeth, and pulled out a worn set of cards, dealing them onto the blanket in front of her.
She looked at them for a long moment, frowning thoughtfully before she spoke. "You need to guard your heart, little star," she said. "For those that would take it aren't always willing to give their own in return."
"We ain't paying you for that," Polly said straight off.

Orli shrieked and ducked behind Polly again, taking longer to peer out again this time. What if... What if she really was a heart-eating witch? What if...!
Then again, maybe it was just figurative language. Orli felt foolish, but at the same time, she was terrified. Maybe this was the meaning of 'scared silly'.
"Polly," she whispered, "I don't like this."

"We can go after she takes the curse off of me!" Polly said, intent on doing what she came to do. "So take it off!"
"Only you can break that curse, child," the witch said. "Learn to control your temper!"
"Take it off!" Polly demanded again.
"You will no longer be cursed when you no longer lose that temper of yours!"
"Take. It. OFF!" Polly bellowed, her hands fisted at her sides, her hair starting to spark with her rage. It twisted and writhed with her rage, becoming a living thing.
"You will hurt your friend if you don't calm down," the witch said mildly.

Orli shied away from both of them now, eyes narrowing in confusion. What was this? Polly had mentioned a curse, but...
The witch really was a witch. That much seemed clear enough. So then... the fortune? Was that true, too?
Orli debated the merits of ditching Polly and running all the way home, but she seemed to grasp that Polly would be mad if she did that. Still, she didn't want to intervene. All she really could do was watch.

Polly took a deep breath, turning to look at Orli with horror in her eyes. "I didn't burn you, did I?" she asked, obviously distraught. Somehow, behind her the witch seemed to fade, as if she would disappear at any moment into the shadows.

Orli shook her head. "No, I don't think so," she said, but she checked her hands and arms just in case. She didn't feel burnt...
At that moment, she happened to glance behind Polly.
"Hey!" she exclaimed. "The witch is gone!"
As if she hadn't been freaked out enough already.

"Yeah, she does that," Polly said irritably. Then she stopped, two little pendants on the ground catching her attention. The first was silver, and shaped like a star. She picked it up, then handed it over to Orli.
The second was gold, and shaped like a bird. She pocketed that one, thinking she'd put it on a chain or an earring. "Well at least she didn't make us pay this time," she muttered.

Orli took the charm from Polly and and fiddled with the clasp on her bracelet until it slid onto the chain, clinking lightly against the shards of glowing crystal. "It's still weird, though," she shrugged, her terror passing. If the witch was gone, she couldn't cut out her heart. And maybe she'd meant something else by the fortune. Maybe it had absolutely nothing to do with cannibalism.
She hoped so.
"I should probably get home," she said.

"Yeah, me too," Polly said, sighing. She kicked a rock. "Sorry bout that," she added before walking away.
Once the two were gone the shadows seemed to open up again, revealing a handsome blonde man in a white tux. "That one," he said, thinking of Polly, "could be quite a problem."
Then he was gone in a sprinkle of sparks.
