Shuuken frowns, her arms folding across her chest. It really isn't fair, is it? Jilan had already become an adult, become able to have fewer restrictions, and then something pulled him back into being this age.
To being ignored by a world run by adults. Shuuken snorts, glancing to the floor in annoyance for a few seconds before dropping down to sit beside him.
Of course he acts young! If he acted like an old man, Shuuken would have no use for him! She grins at Jilan before peering curiously at his book.

The boy projects something about adults having rules, too - maybe moreso in here in the Silver World than back in Gaia - but then hands Shuuken the library book. Pointing out to her where the section on alchemical terms starts, he tells her that he's found a few places already where things that book talks about seem to match some of the strange writings in the old moldy books.
... As for what it all actually means, though, is anyone's guess sweatdrop It is all like a complex cookbook to Jilan Who Can Make Stew And Not Much Else - sure, he can easily figure out that such-and-such process is involved in making a big cake, but he has no concept of what exactly that process involves. ... It would be easy if they had a Lady Nusumu of alchemy or something.
There is a quiet but sudden sound as he reaches over and smacks his palm down on one of the old moldy books, then picks it up. With a sigh, Jilan flips through all the pages too quickly to actually read them (the book smells stranger every time he does that), then settles on a random page. He is not even sure what order the books go in, if there is one, but... there is probably a lot he is missing.
And that is why Princess Shuuken is useful to him, too, he finishes, awkwardly attempting to imitate her tone. More people working on a puzzle always makes it easier.

Shuuken grins at Jilan, her hands on her knees. Shuuken doesn't know how helpful she can be; she's never liked to read, really. However, magic's kinda interesting and she's willing to spend her time on that. After all, being able to throw fire balls or manipulate the universe with one's very essence?
That's pretty cool.
Anyway, Jilan's helping her, right? She'd have to hang herself if she didn't help him! She raises her fist suddenly before moving to grab one of the books. Jilan needs to merely tell her what to do and she'll do it! He's the leader in this little excursion! 3nodding

Hopefully this wallowing in magic theory for an afternoon won't take the fun out of magic for Princess Shuuken, Jilan tells her with a soft laugh. Kumoru's human magic seems like it takes a lot of work to learn, too. ... The boy concludes that if magic was easy and simple, it just would not be anywhere near as interesting or awesome.
As for what to do, uh.... The little scholar shuffles through a few papers scattered about his desk until he locates a stack of black sticky-notes from Gaia, and some of his new gel-ink pens. The notes peel off of the stack and stick to paper without hurting it, so they're good for making notes in the old books, he tells her, and then tells Shuuken that she can pick her favorite pen to write with. He has just been going through the old books and trying to find bits that match up to what the library book's alchemy chapter says, and marking them with the black notes. And then just write in anything that seems important (the light-colored pens work on the black paper; that's what makes them so cool).
He flips through another one of the old books quickly before finding the one that already had some of the little papers stuck to the pages. As Jilan worked to find the place where he had left off, his cake analogy from a few minutes prior worked its way back into his mind-
- And then his stomach growled a little redface
... Would Princess Shuuken like anything to eat? Jilan would be a bad leader if he let her starve. He cannot make a cake, but there are some snacks lying around the house, and he can make some hot tea, too.

Shuuken peers at him with another grin, her brows raising. Jilan seems so serious about these sorts of things, doesn't he? Shuuken has to admit that she probably would find this boring in the long run, but seeing Jilan so interested by it...
... Well, it's sorta cool. She smiles at him before looking to the book--and having her attention quickly stolen. Upon hearing the growl of his stomach, Shuuken laughs before peering at the fierce beast that occupies his tummy. Has Jilan been even ignoring eating to work at this? She looks up at him curiously before defaulting to her usual way of getting things done: threats.
If so, Shuuken will have to beat the stuffing out of him! She raises a fist threateningly before pausing and placing a hand over her own stomach. It emits a low, painful growl and Shuuken's brows crease. She eyes her stomach contemplatively before glancing back to Jilan.
... If he feeds her, she'll forgive him.

Well, he had a small breakfast and then he was playing his zither for a bit after Genka and Kinkyou left, and then maybe he read for a little while before he went to meet the Princess downstairs. So... it's probably time for another snack.
As she threatens him, the little scholar cowers and covers his head, preparing to be beaten up or something. Then he giggles weakly when her stomach growls, too.
Jilan will get her food now, then, if it will convince the Princess to forgive him. He glances up at her from under his arms, then scurries from the room.

Shuuken watches Jilan as he wanders off, a smile lining her face. She obviously likes the shy little scholar; who couldn't, really? Just as she has a charm about her, he has his own brand which is just as strong. She seems to think for a few moments before she begins grabbing at the books; might as well get some work done while she's waiting.
Once Jilan reappears, he'd find Shuuken with the alchemy book and one of the moldy books. She reads through the moldy one before flipping through pages in its companion piece, a pen wiggling from between her lips; he'd see that she's already made one or two connections. After all, two black pieces of paper poke out from some of the moldy book's pages.

Jilan returns with a tray bearing a small teapot and two cups in the middle; the rest of the tray is littered with crackers and dried fruit. He holds it as well as he can in both hands to avoid spilling the hot water from the pot, then uses his elbow to clear a space on the desk for the tray.
Once the food is no longer in danger of being dumped on the floor, the boy settles back on to his chair and urges the Princess to take her first pick of the goodies. Then he picks up the book he had been working on, and looks back over the notes he has already made.
... It is interesting, right? Making all these connections is fun, he supposes, but a lot of this still does not make terribly much sense.... Princess Shuuken has not met anyone who would know anything about any of this? Jilan would ask the High Priest Kouyo, but he is not exactly around.

And her eyes move from the pages of the book and to Jilan, her fruit 'n cracker savior. She smiles softly at the scholar before she sets the moldy book down on the bed while open so she can keep her place.
In a few moments, her fingers grab randomly at crackers and fruit, and she shoves them into her mouth all at once, making her normally thin cheeks bulge. She crunches and munches, watching the scholar. She seems to think on his question before shaking her head.
Shuuken wishes she knew someone who could help; she really doesn't know anyone who is a scholar or magician. She crosses her arms as she begins tapping her foot on the ground rhythmically. Does Jilan have a tutor, maybe? Anyone who could help him understand the "recipe" in the pages?

Genka and Kinkyou have been wonderful tutors, the former teaching him all sorts of things about the beautiful arts and the folklore of the Silver World, and the latter trying to make sure her husband does not "corrupt" him too much or something like that. Neither of them know much about magic, though. Jilan has been going to the library - er, well, Shuuken already knows that - and the librarians there helped him learn to read when he first came, and now they help him find whatever books he needs, but... they are neither Priests nor Sorcerers. He had tried a few times to get them to help explain some of the magic theory books, but of course they only knew the books, not everything within them.
Maybe someday Jilan could be some great all-knowing librarian, who could explain anything in any of the books in one of the city's great libraries. In his dreams or something. He picked up a couple dried fruits and started eating them one at a time.
Where could someone even find an alchemist or whatever, anyway?

Shuuken snorts, annoyance crossing her features. One would think that getting access to magic users would be easier, wouldn't they? Are they really that scarce as to be unattainable?
She drums her fingers across the spine of the moldy book, her mind racing before she shakes her head. All they can do, really, is try to accost a Priest. The worst they can do is be an up-tight jerk; at best, they'll help give them an understanding of what is going on in the books.
However!
Shuuken raises a finger into the air as her cheeks shrink down to their normal size, her brows furrowed. However! They must find more links between the books before they do so. They will be run off if they do not have enough questions and curiosity, right?

Priests should be helpful, Jilan agrees. There are many festivals next month, so it should be easy to find priests to ... accost. Or talk to.
But yes, much more work to be done before then. They need to come up with questions to ask before they can ask them.
... There will probably be a lot of questions, though. It will probably take several priests to get everything answered. And maybe they can try asking around about alchemists, too, if any can be found in the city.

Shuuken nods decisively, her arms folding before her chest. Shuuken agrees with this idea! And maybe they'll be willing to humor them far more than than they would adults? After all, the two are children.
With that said, Shuuken peers at Jilan with big, watery eyes that she apparently produced from years of trickery and acting. Shuuken--Shuuken needs to find out all of this information! It's--it's to help daddy's research!
And as easily as the face was conjured, it disappears. Shuuken grins at her companion before nodding once more. Yes, alchemists would be good options as well!

The boy stifles a giggle, telling her that he thinks that is quite convincing, but since he knows her... it is also a little creepy.
Jilan then attempts a pleading pout of his own, pushing out his bottom lip a little. Please can the good priests help him? It's very important~
... He then laughs at himself and reaches over to pour the tea for them. That sort of crap would never work on his human father sweatdrop

And Shuuken can't help but laugh at his imitation, her head nodding furtively. Yes, yes, that's exactly how one does it! The big eyes, the quivering lip--he's a natural!
Shuuken then nods, frowning slightly. Some adults do have the common sense to not trust those wiles. However! Many do not, and they must use that to their advantage!
Adults have their own advantages that they use against them, after all!
