Joshua smiled. "You pick." He said, cheerfully. Maybe he'd learn a new game! He'd like that. Or maybe they could play tag. "Do you like tag?" He asked, with a tilt to his head. Of course, she'd win. She was bigger. "Or maybe a new game?"

"How about a new game?" Kaimi suggested. She didn't feel up to running around right then. There were places she was still sore. "If we had more people we could play red-rover." She thought for a moment. "Whats your favorite game, Josh?"

Joshua had to think about that. What was his favorite game? He thought of the games he played with Ginger, Zemel, and Lucien. "Pirates?" He suggested with a tilt of his head.
"Or maybe knights? Or dragons? Or... Anything!" Josh could have gone on forever. "As long as we're good guys," He added. "We have to protect. I'll protect you!"

Unexpected tears came to Kaimi's eyes and she bit them back. A protector. She wished... ah. "We can play pirates." She said, smiling a little shakily. "Will you be the pirate captain?"

Joshua put his arms around Kaimi's knees, the best hug he could give the teenager. He didn't understand why she was sad, but he would do his best to make it better.
"I'll be captain," He said, "You be second captain, okay?" That was fair, two captains were better than one.

She sniffled a little and hugged the boy back. "Thanks, Josh. I'd love to be second captain. Shall the jungle-gym be our ship, then?"

Josh nodded, the jungle-gym would make a good ship. "We have to get on it," He said, "We're still in the water! The sharks could get us!" He took her hand, and started climbing onto the 'ship'.

She hadn't played pretend since New Years, which seemed a very very very long time ago. But it was easy enough to get into the swing of things, although she wasn't as enthusiastic as she used to be. Kaimi squeezed his little hand tightly and clambered up onto the jungle gym. "It looks like we made it, captain."

Joshua nodded, and made his hands into a seeing-glass. He put them up to his eye. "I see land!" He said, inviting Kaimi to look. "There must be treasure there!"
It was only logical, right? If there was land, there had to be treasure! That's the rules of being a pirate, right? "And you know what the treasure is?" He asked, looking at his second captain. "It's cake! The other pirates will take it from us if we don't hurry!" Cake was obviously a rare treasure.

Kaimi almost blurted out a comment about cakes being lies, but she bit her tongue and peeked through the looking glass instead. "I hope it's chocolate." Was what she did manage. "We'll have to sail quick if we want to get to it before anyone else does."

Josh nodded in agreement. "We'll go at full speed!" He decided. He paused in thought for a moment. What if they couldn't get to the cake in time? What if some other pirates took it first? "Anyway.. My Mommy'll make us cake if we miss it." He nodded as wisely as any pirate captain could.
"You could come over-- to my house sometime!" He invited. "Mommy likes girls-- she says she doesn't like being the only one in the house."

"Maybe someday she'll get you a little sister, then. I have a little sister." Of course, Kaimi's sister was kind of crazy. But still. "Then she wont be the only girl and you'll have someone to play with all the time."

Josh smiled at Kaimi. "I hope so!" He said cheerfully. "I got Vinny, but Vinny's kinda... big." He demonstrated how tall his younger brotherwas by reaching his arm over his head. "My little brother , but bigger than me!" The toddler crossed his arms. Clearly, if one was a 'little brother' they should be smaller. It was only fair.
"If I get a sister, I'll protect her too. From dragons and monsters and mean pirates and lots of stuff. Bishop gave me a sword so now I can protect Mommy too." He paused, looking at Kaimi curiously. "What's your sister's name?" He asked.

"My sister's name is Mara." Kaimi blinked when he mentioned her best friend. "You know Bishop?" She smiled. "You must be very special if she gave you a sword. I'll bet it's a magical sword."

Joshua smiled. Bishop was one of his good friends. He was always eager to talk about friends."Bishop's my friend. She plays pretend with me and I was a sold'ir. And she gave it to me for Chrissymas!" He explained, "Bishop says it can only be used by me-- cause it's white and pure and stuff. I think stuff will happen if other kids touch it. Not bad though." He didn't like the idea of people getting hurt.
"And Bishop says I gotta name it something good cause it's special! But I can't pick a good name." He frowned, remembering what his friend had said about picking the name out himself.
