Manny nodded, taking it as a sign to stop pressing the issue. She hadn't thought much about exams herself, if she were to take them now she would fail. For a moment she cringed, hoping that they would make allowances because of her absence. "I don't know what I'm going to do about exams," she admitted, sketching over the line of a sleeve that was irking her, "I missed so much, but if I don't get them taken by the time grades close I fail the year."

Ophelia put down her sandwich and fished around in her lunch bag for a bottle of water. "Your teachers will understand, though, right?" she asked, sounding a bit concerned for her new friend. "I mean, they can't exactly hold it against you if you were sick. It wasn't your fault or anything." "You could find someone to help you study?" she suggested.

Manny nodded. "I was hoping to ask Antony," she sighed, "But I doubt he really wants anything to do with me anymore. I kind of shrugged him and Riley off when I got involved with Harper and then... Well..." A few tears welled up in her eyes and she wiped them away with her sleeve, "I just don't think he'd care to see me much, Riley either, and I don't really know anyone around here anymore. It seems like everything's changed." She shrugged, looking over the papers spread around her. Even her designs had changed.

Ophelia shrugged apologetically. "He might," she said. She really didn't know any of the people Manny had just mentioned besides Antony. "I don't know him too well, but he seems really nice? And he's really smart. One of the best in our class, I think."
Her best friends, meanwhile, were Wisp and Casca, and neither of them were exactly National Merit Scholar material.
"You never know until you try, right?" she added hopefully - Ophelia was ever the optimist.
At that moment, the bell signaling the end of lunch rang.

Manny smiled, starting a bit at the bell. She began to tuck her drawings away back in their case and hobble about putting the supplies away. Unlike Ophelia she could dawdle if she wanted, the teachers tended not to care so much if she was late. "You're probably right," she admitted, "Things have just been weird lately." She let out a breath, straightening her back as she scooped her bag up, "Where are you heading after here?"

Ophelia had strayed a bit and was hurriedly packing up her paints and stripping her easel. The paints themselves were a personal set - they closed up into a neat little pine box with a few mother of pearl stars inlaid into the lid.
"Remedial math," she said quietly, and made a face. "I'm awful with numbers."
She tucked her art supplies into her knapsack and packed her lunch back into the paper bag. "So, I'll see you around! Ask him! Good luck!" she said happily, and gave Manny a quick wave before hurrying out the door.
