What are gnome houses?

What are gnome houses?

Uhm. Fairy houses? You just go out and collect sticks and materials from the woods and make little houses for wood sprites. razz

People make gnome houses in order to find things which they have lost, or to gain good luck, because they 'watch over you' when you do good things for them.

Like, I gave them tobacco and wine one night, (it's what I had on me) and made a house. The next day I had some really good luck. >.o

I'm a big fan of superstitions.

I've come across similar things, but I've seen that some had a bit of a warning about how it was kind of a commitment and they might not be too happy if you just stopped. I've seen more emphasis on the whole getting to know things around you, nature, whatever, then on the benefits (good fortune). Might have been less emphasized so it'd be a perk for sincere people vs greedy one.

Actually they do get pissy when I go out in the woods and don't build one. Usually I give them tobacco and pot when I make the homes, or other small gifts.

I think the primary belief in it is that you respect nature and the spirits of nature and build them things as a gift and a thanks for the times they are near, or allowing you to have an enjoyable experience in their forest.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I only make the little houses for good fortune. At my college, you basically hang out in the woods, there's no malls or any sort of civilization around here. So we respectfully build homes for them in order to thank them for the times we may tromp through their forest, or if we aren't being LNT and leave beer cans and s**t behind when we have bonfires. :C

Oh... I'm not sure I've ever done that. I'm not sure I haven't, though, at some point.

The only thing I do that sort of relates to that, I guess, is how I talk to aspects of nature. I thank the rain for coming, the wind for its dance, the sun for shining through or the clouds for a blessed relief... on rare occasions, a flame for being beautiful and warm, or for doing as I ask it, or a house (or other shelter) for standing firm and protecting against natural, unatural, or human elements. The moon... for personal reasons. *shrug* I don't build anything for them, of course, but my thanks is sincere and has what power I can muster behind it.

The wind and rain, at least, often respond. Especially the wind. ^_^ I love the wind. *hugs unhuggable wind* I cannot express that feeling well, but... when injured and on crutches, how many times did the wind rush by a heavy door, pulling it open just enough when I needed help? The wind is special. A hot wind when I needed a push, a cool wisp of breeze for comfort, a tiny hint of rain on my nose or hand when there was no water for miles? This is the wind, and it loves me. I have no other explanation, because I love it back...

Hah. That's awesome. When the smoke is blowing in my face, and changes directions I thank the fire, that gets me a few odd looks. Then again, I am the person who makes everyone in the car lift their feet up while going over railroad tracks.

*silent laughter* Yeah, I've done that, too. I wonder sometimes if I would be more comfortable or less if all the world did the same thing and there were no funny looks. More comfortable, I guess, but I can see myself as the one giving funny looks if the culture switch was sudden.

Or worse--a fad. *shudder*

Railroad tracks? A superstition I don't know about? The only railroad ones I can think of are about smashed pennies and about ghost lanterns.

there is actually a myth i read about that is very similar to the cracks in the road story. suppossedly if u drive over a railroad and dont lift your feet up as u go over, everyone in the vehicle will have bad luck i think it said for like 6 months or sumthin like that. anyway ive never really believed in that stuff. for example the black cat issue. i have never had anything but good luck from them
