He stuck his tongue out at her, though the expression was more playful than actually irritated or upset. "Eh, y'never can tell with people," he said with a nod. "Met a girl th'other day turned out t'be a boy. That was a surprise," he added earnestly, though he smiled at the memory. The mistake hadn't been funny at the time, but in hindsight, he thought it was pretty hilarious. After a moment, he remembered they were in a pet store full of interesting things and turned to look at the turtles again.

"Really?" Her lips quirked at the thought; somehow it wasn't hard to imagine Melchy making a humourous mistake like that.
She followed his line of sight back to the small animals and sighed gently. "I actually did come to buy one, but I don't have enough. So next month, I guess." She didn't get her allowance until then and the turtle she wanted would probably be gone by then, but that was life.

"Din't know guys could have hair that long," Melchy said, then looked at the turtle and back at Maddy. He had like....six dollars. He was pretty sure that six dollars wouldn't really get Maddy anywhere, but it would be incourteous not to ask.
"D'you still need a lot, 'er just a little?" he asked. "Cos if it's just a little, I c'n help out er whatever."

"Nah, it's alright." She waved off his offer with a grateful smile. "I'll save up and get him myself - it's more meaningful that way, right?" Besides, six dollars wasn't nearly enough, but telling him that would go against the politeness her mother had painstakingly instilled in her. It was a nice offer, though.

"Kay," Melchy answered with a quick shrug. He wasn't sure about how much more 'meaningful' it would be if the girl waited a long time for the turtle, but he wasn't about to tell her that he thought her ideas were bunk. Maddy wasn't the only one who had had politeness beaten into her (probably, though, Melchy's beatings were rather more literal). And even if Melchy disregarded the rules sometimes, he didn't generally try for rudeness. Frowning a little bit, he pushed up his sleeve and sighed as he realized he hadn't worn a watch. Katrina would kill him if he came home late.
"Um, hate t'bother ye like this, but d'ye have the time?" he asked Maddy, looking a little sheepish. "Looks like I fergot m'watch."
