Thumper skated gently over towards shore.
"It's alright Peter. Just hop on!" he said encouragingly. He then proceeded in skating around in a figure eight, being careful not to get too far from Peter and the shore. He knew how hard it was to get started with the whole skating thing and he wanted to be able to help Peter enjoy this as much as he possible could.

Peter watched Thumper effortlessly gliding over the smooth ice. "Hmm....it does not seem so hard." He happily put both paws on the ice and immediately found themselves begin propelled forward. Eyes widening, he tried to to bring them back, but they insisted on going forward, and now he was moving his back paws to try and steady himself.
He pushed out with his back paws and suddenly he propelled his entire body forward onto the ice, going along on his front like a sled, his coat flapping like a flag. When he finally slid to a stop, he had ice flecks clinging to his chestfur, and he blinked tiny crystals from his eyes. "Wow..."

Thumper slid over to Peter with wide eyes. He was kinda worried with that first glide onto the ice that Peter wouldn't like skating either. He stopped himself sharply in front of his rabbit friend, holding out a paw to help him up.
"You okay Peter? 'Cause that was cool!"

Gratefully accepting the paw, Peter carefully lifted himself up, extending his small claws in an attempt to anchor his paws in place. "Cool? Actually, it feels quite cold." He grinned in spite of himself. "But it was fun; I am surprised that it would push me forward so fast."

"Oh! Blake told me it's cause there's very little f..." Thumper paused trying hard to remember the word, "Fr..fraction?" It sounded close enough, "Yes. Very little fraction so you can slide really fast all over the place!" He nodded happily, skating around Peter in a circle once he was sure his friend wouldn't fall back down.

Peter grinned as he watched Thumper skate in circles around him. "I think the word you are looking for is 'friction'. It does seem to help you go fast; a pity it cannot aid you in going slower, for beginners." He shrugged and after watching Thumper closely, he put his paws firmly in front of him and gave himself a tiny push. He slid forward about a foot, and he didn't fall down. He looked over at Thumper excitedly. "I slid and I did not fall! Did you see?"

Thumper sat on his back paws and clapped for Peter's achievement. He was glad his friend was so excited.
"Way to go Peter! I knew you could do it!" He jumped, his paws slipping on the ice when he landed. He fell backwards and was quiet for a moment then started to laugh.

Watching Thumper fall, Peter chuckled. "At least the ice does not seem to pick favorites." He shifted his paws and did a confusing shuffle-dance with his front paws before his front half flopped down onto the ice, leaving his lower half sticking up and still balanced. "Well.....this is undignified, to say the least."

Thumper stood back up and skated over to Peter, still laughing. He thought the situation was quite comical.
"This ice likes to play with us as much as we like to play on it!" he said between little fits of laughter. He held out a paw then to help Peter up.

Peter accepted the paw and carefully stood up. "At least the ice is having fun while it is still here. Perhaps it does not get many friends to play with." He shuffled once more and soon managed to do little hop-jumps on the ice to propel himself forward.

"I haven't seen many others play around on the ice like I do. I think it gets kinda lonely all by itself. Then it goes away for so long..." he paused, skating around vacantly as he thought, "Where do you think the ice goes when it's too warm?"

"Where it goes?" Peter stopped his hopping to ponder, looking genuinely thoughtful. "Well, usually when I am around there is no ice; it is too far into spring, so I am afraid I kinow very little about ice, nor have I found a reason to think on where it goes. I imagine it has a nice, cool place to rest until it is needed again, along with its friend snow."

Thumper tried to imagine the place Peter was talking about. To him it was a nice place where the sun shone but wasn't warm enough to melt the snow and ice. Where the snowflakes got to dance around in the sky all day long while the blanket of white sat comfortable along rolling hills and shallow valleys. The idea of this made him smile.
"Well the snow always visits us with the ice. Maybe someday we can find out where they go and visit them!"

"Perhaps," Peter replied. "I do think that ice and snow live North, because that is where they always seem to be. I think I also heard a story about ice in the far North that is so cold it never melts. Would that not be a sight to see?" He looked down at his ice-encrusted paws. "Though I do not imagine that it would be at all pleasant to walk on."
