"I see." She fidgeted a bit with her fingers and then tilted her head slightly so she could regard him from under long eyelashes. "Uncle Kiet was a lawyer," she added, slightly non sequitor. Then, quietly, she asked, "Are you that anxious to get away?"
From me/us/them could only be inferred but not sworn to - chances were, this being Delilah, the first was probably the most accurate. Not that Antony would suspect that.

"No," he said honestly. "In fact, that was one of my biggest dilemmas. I don't want to leave everyone behind, but you see," he said. "We grow so quickly. I need to move even more quickly if I'm going to accomplish all that I want to." In other words he fully believed his life would be very short, indeed. "I can't stay in Liberty and get the credits I need to go to law school."

"And you've asked, I'm sure." Delilah's voice remained quiet but slow, almost as if she were afraid of interrupting the scene they were having at that moment. He noticed, for the first time, her perfume - sweet and exotic, a bit heady but not overpowering.
Suddenly, she looked up more fully and met his eyes. She smiled ever so slightly. "Of course you asked."

"My father is part of the staff at Liberty," he told her mildly. "And I had a chat with Ms. Darnell, as well. Liberty is a good school, but it's still just starting out. The college level is practically nonexistent. It won't carry the weight I need to get into a proper school and pass the bar."
He sighed. "I would like to see what else is out there, as well. I've been very... sheltered." In a way. In a way, not. But he wouldn't bother explaining that to her.

She nodded slightly to show her understanding. "Of course," she repeated. "I'm being selfish. This is going to be something important for you. I'm sure you'll do well wherever you go."

He wasn't sure, but he could have sworn she sounded a bit... no, not Del. She probably meant every word of it. He hoped. "Well thank you," he said a bit stiffly. "I can only hope that you're right. Now why don't we enjoy ourselves? This is the first time in a while that we've been able to talk, so why don't you tell me what you've been doing recently?"

"Oh, well." Delilah gave him one of her sweetest smiles, slightly crooked and shy. "Nothing as life-changing as you but I've had fun. Mama and Uncle Kiet and I had a nice Christmas together." She propped an elbow on the table and rested her cheek against the raised hand. Now she looked purely mischievous, eyes dancing. "Santa, um, was very generous. Oh, and there was the party at Twilight Designs. That was fun. Mama made a lot of treats and I wore a new dress. It was a costume party, you see. Mr. Ezra and Mystic danced with me."

"I'm sure you looked quite lovely," he said with a slight smile as the server came to take their orders. He gave his and waited patiently for Delilah to give hers as well, letting the server left before going on. "And what did you dress as?"

"A princess, of course." The barely-checked smile rang with teasing now but she maintained her slightly dreamy pose and her attention remained fully and wholly and gratifyingly on him. "It was the most lovely dress. Pale pink and gold." She suddenly looked thoughtful. "I should have thought to invite you. I'm sorry."

"I'll have to see if anyone did," she answered. Then she paused as the waitress returned with their orders. She smiled a bit at the woman and murmured a thank you for her blueberry pie and hibiscus tea. She waited until the waitress had left before she refocused on Antony. "Though I hope I can find something to wear the dress to again."

"I'm sure the opportunity will arise sooner or later," he said smoothly as he started to eat. Things were much better now that she wasn't making him feel guilty.
