Suddenly, Gideon's smile was tight, briefly painful, and he poured himself another glass, draining it all in one swallow. "Ah, my mistake. I meant it in the past tense. I had a wife. She only died recently." The tall man shrugged, as if to move on. "I can be considered an eternal bachelor now, though." Setting the glass inside his desk, he pulled out a small wooden box, and placed it carefully on the dark wood.
"I highly doubt it's simply a theory." His large hands went to the lid of the box and he opened it, chuckling as he raised an eyebrow at the blonde. "Perhaps this will help you stay in touch with yourself." A murmur, and a bright butterfly flew out of the box, heading to its new master. Micajah.
"Consider it a promotion gift, and welcome to the school of magic. We'll just say that's your familiar."

The butterfly flew over to Micajah and quickly turned to a soft shade of white as it drew close to his cheek, mimicing the obvious color that decorated the poor boy's face.
He hadn't meant to bring up a sore topic like death in the manner that he had, he hadn't meant to at all. What had seemed like an innocent question had clearly caused someone else pain on his behalf, and normally Micajah would mark it up to learning to be social...but for some reason it made him sad and a little taken aback. The butterfly clearly showed this by the way it went from a white to a softer blue, almost a baby blue, and the youth watched it with wonder.
"I...I will be going then, I don't want to be much of a bother any longer to you. Thank you for the butterfly, I'll treasure it."
Micajah slipped to his feet silently and made his way to the door, only looking over his shoulder to stare at the teacher one last time. His chest hurt again, though not like before, but he knew what this feeling was. He'd felt it many times before when thinking of others, though never about himself. A feeling like burning, only cold.
Pity.THE END
