And draw a deep breath through her nose, nodding vigorously and instantly regretting it. The air was a bit stale, and she coughed in her throat to keep from making too much noise.

"It smells very weird," she choked out, her eyes watering from the effort. She would have laughed at herself if she wasn't so busy trying not to make a sound. Shaking her head, clearing her throat a couple of times, she swallowed hard and nodded, recomposing herself.

"Curiosity is a good thing, I think. If there's danger around, I think you're supposed to find it. Avoiding it doesn't do any one any good: because what if it just comes to find you? A good person would go out there and get to it first, and maybe do some... good." She nodded, thinking out loud more than making conversation.

She stopped, hearing a growl deeper in the den. They had been making slow, steady progress down the surprisingly deep den, but now it was opening up and it seemed that there was, in fact, something sleeping inside. She stopped abruptly, bristling.

"Maybe we should go back..." she whispered, another growl meeting her ears.

Maha herself was starting to choke with the stale air. However she followed Kita's example and tried to make as less noise as possible.

"Right, you should always be aware of the possible dangers around you." She said quietly with a nod. "But it wouldn't be terribly great if you got killed from being overly curious, would it-" Maha's words were cut off by a sound that reached her ears. She whipped her head in it's direction, freezing in the middle of her step, ears drawn back.

She slowly turned her head in Kita's direction. "Mmhmm." Her fear showed clearly. She tried to calm herself, but had little success.

And turned and pushed Maha with her nose, ushering her on first. Once she got behind her new acquaintance she started pushing her head against the others butt, to make her go as fast as possible. And felt responsible, so she went second. If the growling thing came after them, at least Maha would have a chance, right?

They were out of the den before too long, and there was no sign of the growling creature. She sighed, her fur sticking in every direction and her eyes still wild with fear. Her heart was thundering in her chest, filling her ears and making it difficult to hear anything beyond her racing pulse.

"So maybe we shouldn't explore here," she said, cracking a grin with her sarcasm, as if to disarm the situation with a poor attempt at humor. It was her first defense in any situation. "Doesn't seem like a safe idea."

Maha tried to get to the end of the tunnel as fast as she could, fearing that whatever was in the den was going to get Kita. When she saw the bright spot of the exit her pace increased even more. She leapt out in the sunlight. Once she was out she turned sharply to see if Kitandiko had gotten out. When her eyes fell on her green and black form she gave a giant sigh of relief. Her legs gave out from under her and she sat down, shaking from the adrenaline rush.

She laughed at the other cub's remark."I hear that!" she said once her breathing had evened enough for her to talk properly. "I'm definitely not going down there again. Ever."

She stoop once she started to feel her hind legs again and shook her fur to get it in order. "Well, that was quite the adventure."

And laughed, nodding, and trying not to feel too guilty about it. She knew she would be dwelling on this later, but for now the rush of not being killed was too much a focus for her. Any regret about being the one to suggest the place from the start would have to come later.

"Yeah it was," she said, shaking her head, "I think it was enough of one, for one day. I also think collecting shells is a lot safer. Maybe I should go home now... and you should, too, I guess. Though, I'm not going to tell you what to do."

She offered a smile, not really knowing how to say she wouldn't mind hanging out again sometime. She had no friends, so communicating with them was a bit out of her range. So she didn't bring it up, thinking maybe she would see the other around the pride or something. Besides, what if Maha didn't want to hang out with her now? It was safer not to assume they had made any kind of friendship.

"I am kind of sorry I put you in danger," she said, her ability to be truthful and insulting at the same time emerging once again as she emphasized 'kind of'.

Maha nodded in agreement. She too had had enough excitement for today. She wanted to rest a little and feel the safety of her family's den again.

"Home sounds good right about now. Collecting shells is safer, but I don't think I want to be alone on the beach right now." Maha admitted. "Maybe another time and then we can dig around the sand for some together?" She offered.

"I think I kind of put myself in danger. I could have just stayed outside. Don't worry about it." She said, making it clear that she didn't blame And for anything.

"I'd like that," And said, finding herself oddly sincere. She didn't have a sarcastic response ready for this moment, which was unusual. She supposed she really did want to stay friends with Maha. It would be nice. Maybe they would be able to get into more trouble together. She grinned at the idea. She frowned thoughtfully, realizing what she was agreeing to, "I mean, so long as we dig... away from the water."

She smiled and nodded, relieved to hear Maha say that she wasn't blamed for the events of the day. In retrospect, And was sure, it would be a fun story to tell their siblings about. For the moment, however, it was still a bit too fresh for her to consider bragging rights just yet. Sighing, finally steadying her racing heart, she turned in the general direction of home.

"Well, the next time you want to do something dangerous I'll be right with you, so we can even the score. I'll see you sometime soon, okay?" She sounded unsure, almost uncomfortable, and she didn't look back as she spoke. She didn't want to see something that told her she wouldn't. Bouncing off, she wondered vaguely if she should dare a glance back, just to show she was serious about being friends.

But she didn't.

The end! (?)

Maha laughed. "Of course. Far away from the water. I promise." She was grinning widely, happy that And had agreed. For a moment she thought she wouldn't. The way she saw it, Kita had showed that she enjoyed her company. Which was good because the spotted cub definitely wanted to learn more about her green friend.

"As soon as I think of something, I'll let you know." Maha said cheekily. It was good to know that she had someone to back her up next time she ended up in trouble.

Maha watched Kitandiko walk away without turning back. After a few moments she shook her head with a smile and headed for home. This Kita...she was a very interesting friend to have. Maha wondered what trouble would they stir up next time. She looked forward to it.
