Kane sniffed the lever, eyeing the helix as he started circling him. Instinct told him to protect his back but reason countered that protection now was almost impossible. He pawed at it then decided the humans probably stepped on it with their big feet. Which meant he would need a good deal of weight to pry the jaws open. One front foot wasn't doing the trick.

He stepped on it with a back foot then put all of his weight on that foot by lifting his other legs. It was a very awkward position. It was practically sitting on the trap and didn't want his tail bitten off. His ears rotated as he listened to the other male's voice. He certainly wasn't ignoring him.

The lever shifted downward, opening the jaws a fraction before the helix lost his balance and fell over. The jaws snapped shut again, biting deeper. A small yelp was his first sign of pain, along with a fresh ooze of blood from the cut.

Hope now fighting hard against the emotional barriers he struggled up and tried again, pressing his tail against the ground to help stay up long enough. Wiggling about he stood all his weight on his back foot again, on the lever. The jaws opened again, not all the way but just enough for him to tug his injured limb out of the trap.

He quickly licked the wound clean, then carefully experimented by putting weight on the limb. When pain didn't shoot up his leg he breathed a huge sigh of relief. It wasn't broken, just a flesh wound he would need to watch so that it didn't become infected.

He was also now trapped from his home in the North until it healed. The threat of frost bite was real and without fur the wound was vulnerable to freezing. He didn't mind too much, he had been traveling around the other territories to learn, and learning he was!

He stood up and stared at the murderer, his savior. He blinked, not really knowing what to do. Should he thank him? Or just leave? Should he be angry? Scared? Happy? He didn't know he was just....confused. His eyes weren't bored anymore, they were questioning.

He now couldn't properly judge this helix as either good or bad. The good and bad lines were blurred and mixed together. He wasn't black or white, he was a gray area, an undecided. Blinking he said the only thing he could think of at the time to show his gratitude as subtle as possible.

"Advise taken."

He still had questions though. "Why? Why did you spare me when you could have killed me? Why did you risk releasing me? Why didn't you leave me there to die? Why?"

There were mountains in the East that were in the northern part of the Eastern territory, ( Benita's territory. ) and a river in the southern part. ( Sorrel's territory. ) The mountains were just now visible because the clouds moved out of the way. One mountain seemed slightly bigger than the others because it was slightly closer. It was also green with thick bamboo and woodland forests.

After the chase, a brush with death, and licking his own blood from the wound, blood that was now dry in his throat he found himself parched. He needed water, he smell some south of here. First he was hoping his questions would be answered though, so he didn't wonder about it years from now.

Though he was only an adolescent (albeit almost an adult), Verdauga seemed older. He sat back on his haunches and watched the young Northerner sharply with his single blue eye and debated on how to answer. Perhaps this fellow would learn his lesson, as he had a rather painful reminder for a while.

"There a reason Ah should'a?" He asked in a rather nonchalant tone. His fleeing was momentarily forgotten as he faced Kane. Oh yes, he would have to run soon...

But he would make time for this other adolescent. From his behavior he must of been a Northerner... And acting that way often ended up alienating other helixes at times. Plus what was good in sparing him if he just got himself killed a little later on.

OOC: Not really! Just gotta pace yourself! Kane and Ver are fun, so it won't be too hard! <3

Kane opened his mouth to say something, then closed it without saying a word. His ears flattened, relaxed enough to droop, as if sad, then stiffened and flattened against his head again as if in anger. His muzzle even scrunched up as if in a growl but still not a sound came from him. He was mentally battling himself. He was two-sided. Split.

His Northern half mentally screamed "Yes! You are a fool! I could attack you later once I heal! Risk taker! You should have killed me, left me to die...." While he wasn't suicidal at all it was just how he was raised before his abandonment and somewhat afterward. Survival of the fittest. Death to the weak. Death to those who risk their neck to help the weak. It was unnatural to be kind to others not even of your family or pack. Even worse if it were an enemy but was he still an enemy anymore? Kane was the weak, he was injured, he had fallen prey to man's predator catcher. He should by all rights have been killed.

His newer, still quite unknown and unnamed side argued that issue. "You didn't see the trap, didn't have a chance to avoid it. This doesn't make you weaker, just the injury is vulnerable and it'll heal in time. Through this helix's speed you should remember that disabilities don't make you weak unless you let them, those can be overcome. You have changed much since leaving the North for this short while. You have learned. You and Shadow saved Nani. Now this helix has saved you. Nani now has a chance to grow up and become strong, and now you have that chance too. Helping each other is okay....it's good to help out." He shook his head, wondering if the southern territories had rubbed off on him. Maybe he should return home soon...but not before getting a drink.

"I...." Kane shook his head, trying to choose which side to listen to. "I don't know!" He huffed then took a deep breath, trying to calm his inner turmoil. He had judged too quickly before knowing this helix. He thought a murderer wouldn't mind killing again, it's not like anyone would really care if he died. He had no loving parents or pack. Perhaps he to rethink things, even though he had killed once he was merciful enough to spare the life of one who attacked him.

"What's your name?" He didn't just want to know, he needed to know. That way he could put a name to the helix who fought his Northern attitude with kindness and taught him very valuable lessons. Being he swung both ways he wasn't sure if he'd ever have pups but if he did he would tell them this story to teach them too.

"Verdauga..." His reply was short and simple as he continued to study the young male before him. From Kane's expression and posture, he could easily see that the male was confused, much like himself.

"An' you?" It wasn't exactly like knowing the name of the red and white male would make much of a difference. He might see this male in the future, but then again he might not. He could of shrugged it off, yet he held a mild curiosity. He would have to take off again, soon... He would certainly warn this male to do the same, as his own scent would be all over him.

"Wot they call you?" Perhaps it would be useful, if not it would at least seem polite to ask.

"My name's Kane." He answered simply, sitting up straighter. He had to snap out of his own thoughts, it wasn't polite to ignore someone talking to you by staring off into space. Besides he could sort out all of his thoughts later.

His tail curled around his front legs, crimson tail tuft matching the red bands around his legs and the color of his eyes. The teen shrugged more to himself than to Verdauga. "Just thought...I might as well know your name, ya know? Better than calling you 'Hey you!' or 'It.' Might meet again, might not." He cocked his head to one side. "Got any more advise for me?" He asked, curious. "I'm all ears."

"Thouth th'same thing." He mumbled as he studied the younger adolescent with a mild interest. It was best to know, after all, just in case. Hopefully this male would not lead any other helixes onto his trail. He was running big risk just letting the other male walk away...

"Y''learn a bit if y' watch yer opponent. Try to find a weakness afore you strike. Sometimes it ain't best to attack first, 'specially if y' don't know much about yer opponent, y'know?" He suggested as he sat back on his haunches and wrapped his own tail around his paws

Kane nodded his head. "I lack battle tactics. Was never taught really." He looked away and shrugs his shoulders. "I'll probably learn the hard way through experience. No one will teach me. No parents." He explained shortly, with the same trained Northern indifference. If his parents didn't care enough about him to keep him then that was fine, he didn't need them! He'd proven that by staying alive past puphood by himself.

"No parents?"

The tone of this particular helix only confirmed his suspicions. This male had to be of the North, why else would be he so indifferent? "Y'learn mostly though 'sperience, really. Mah ma' taught meh a bit, but it shies 'n comparison t'what Ah ended up learnin' on mah own." He replied quietly. His heavy ears tilted in the direction of the West. He could hear them, their howls. He couldn't stay too terribly much longer.

"Sparin' wi' others'll teach y' a bit. Mayhap someone y'own age." Verdauga was an adolescent, but he was teetering on the edge of adulthood. "That ne'er 'urts, y'know."

"I'll need to find others to spar with I suppose." He sighed, he still wasn't much of a social helix, if you couldn't tell. "Guess I'll be learning on my own too." He resigned himself to that, he wasn't part of a pack yet. He was still learning how to trust packs since they had been less than helpful to him when he was a pup. "Let's start heading East, we'll split off when I get close to the river." He offered, standing up, ready to limp away from the direction of the howls. He knew they weren't after him but he was injured and they were a pack bent on hurting someone. Right now he trusted Verdauga more than he did the helixes whom were probably after him.

"Righ' ... At th' river, be sure t'wash yer scent well. Ah dunno, but they migh' head after ya if they pick it up." He told the slightly younger Helix as he turned to face the direction he had been running initially. It wouldn't be too far, now, and hopefully Kane could keep up well enough, despite his injury.

"They prob'ly won't, but s'hard t' guess. Anyways, don' want y' t'get caught up in it." He padded forward slowly and glanced back at the red and white adolescent with his single blue eye.

Kane grunted, getting up stiffly. He was limping but it wasn't too bad, he looked forward to washing the wound in the river. "I know how to disappear when I need to." He rumbled, remembering all the times as a pup when he had needed to hide from the packs that kept bothering him. Had he been told as a pup that he'd want to join a group someday he probably would have laughed himself silly.

He followed after the male as fast as he could, ears flicking backwards to listen for Verdauga's pursuers. "Pay back sucks." He commented dryly, meaning it in two ways. Sure, they were trying to get Verdauga, but in a way this leg injury might be pay back for all the times he had been a mean, cold, suspicious stereotypical Northerner. The rest of the territories never had such negative attitudes. "Well, I doubt anyone would want to follow you up there." He answered, pointing his nose up toward the mountains nearby.

"S'what ah'm 'opin' for." He rumbled quietly as he pushed himself forward and his legs and peg worked together to carry him quickly. He thought he could hear them, but he was also in a worried panic and his mind could of very well been playing tricks on him. One, now two, against many was certainly unfair and he wouldn't stand a chance at the moment if they were caught.

"It's either up th' mountains or up North, y'see. Ah'd rather stay where it's a smidge warm 'n wet, like 'ome."

Kane flicked his ears back, listening to the sounds behind them nervously. If he was caught with this bloke he'd be guilty by association. He wasn't arrogant enough to believe he could take them all on while injured like this. "I don't know, I've heard some mountains are cold. Never been up one though. North isn't too bad." He defended lightly, it was his home. He'd grown up there by himself and turned out fine. "It wouldn't be good for you though, you would make very distinct tracks for them to follow." He thought about that peg leg, it would probably sink in the snow unless he attached something big to the end of it. While snowfall covered tracks his would still be easily followed. He'd find no peace among suspicious northerners...
PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 3:16 pm

"E'zactly, mate. Ah'm 'opin' it'd be warmer 'n 'eading up there. Ah'd probably freeze t'death, an y'can quote me on that." He mumbled as he pushed himself further. There was a river not far, now, and he could smell the fresh, running water. If there was any way to hide their scents, it would be to soak and follow the water a ways, perhaps north a bit, then head further into Eastern territory.

"Wot y'doin' so far down, any'oo? Travelin'?" He struck up light conversation as they moved, trying to calm the wavering nerves that had balled up in his stomach. No good to panic, now.

Kane nodded his head yes. "Yeah, I'm traveling everywhere in hopes of becoming an Alpha or a Beta someday. I grew up alone in the north, packs kept trying to take me in. It was nice and all but back then I had no idea about ranks, why others considered themselves better. I wasn't good with authority. Some packs stole from me so I hated them. I also wouldn't call anyone mother or father, I knew who my parents are. Abandoned by them during tough times, plan to thank them for it someday. Finding enough food for a pack up there is hard, finding enough for one small pup is much easier." He explained this all without a hint of sorrow, as if he were simply talking about the weather.

"Now thanks to a friend named Ravenfall I learned more about ranks. Thanks to another pup named Nani I learned that others didn't do so well in the snow. I've seen the roughest of life and I'm ready to take on responsibility. It'll be nice not to be lonely anymore. Maybe I'm just going soft huh? Need to return home someday. Got to meet one of each rank though, and a God or Goddess."
