Tbh, here's how I've always looked at it. (my mains a mage and always will be)
Frost is brilliant for learning instances as survivability is second to none, unless your group is struggling on dps and you know the instance fully, or at least have a very good idea of how it goes. At which point survivability goes out of the window, as you shouldn't be doing anything to get yourself killed.
When that happens, spec frostfire. I was churning out 1.8k dps in frost, self buffed and without pots, and with the same gear I'm chucking out 2.6k dps+ self buffed without pots and that's in a sustained 4 minute fight with no mana issues.

personally, im a frost mage at heart. the improved bliz + frostbite=nothing can touch you, and deep freeze pwns in pvp. the instant fireball is also nice as well, but nothing compares to the water ele. but i plan on going fire for raids since wotlk made fire spells more mana efficient. i will miss the ice barrier tho crying

Scarele To be honest, I never thought about mages all that much. I know our main mage stacks haste and spell damage. He misses a lot but when he hits it's hard and fast. Crams out over 2k dps at level 74. (granted, this is group buffed) one problem with this philosophy. haste is the gift from the gods for healers, but ain't as useful to magic dps. i'd say to pump hit and crit, then spellpower, then haste if any. that way u still hit hard, but never going to miss. it is extremely rare to find gear with crit and haste, other than tier 7 xp

Screw spell damage and other stats until you're capped, because if you're not, your dps on raid bosses takes a massive hit. Then it depends on your preferences.
Personally because I'm going to be specing ffb, I'm going for crit as my secondary stat followed by spelldamage. I haven't done the calculations but I'd believe with the procs and ffbs reliability on crit, points of crit would add more dps than points in anything else.

AceHigh Hit (until cap) > Spell damage > Crit / haste no, no, no hit>crit>spell power>haste mages are made for critting, especially frost, but the other stats count for nothing if u cant hit a single thing mrgreen

the benefits of crit vs haste greatly depend on if you are using frostfire bolt or fire/frostbolt.
if ffb: crit if else: haste

In case you were wondering, Frost is the best spec for PvP. I don't know how someone could say that the best spec for a particular area of the game sucks no matter what, unless they were extremely retarded.

that isnt true. a good arcane mage with the same gear as a frost mage will get trucked by the arcane one.

Wait, what? A good arcane mage with the same gear as a frost mage will get trucked by the arcane mage?
So the arcange mage will get trucked by the arcane mage?
BTW, PvP isn't "1v1 lets see which spec is better".

AceHigh Neltharion4 AceHigh Hit (until cap) > Spell damage > Crit / haste no, no, no Hit (until cap) > Spell damage > Crit / haste mages are made for critting. Frost sucks. mrgreen Fixed. hit is worth more than spelldamage, that's where you're right. spell damage is worth exactly one spell damage. nothing more. spellcrit is worth a lot more than spell damage to a frostfire bolt specced mage. you will get more damage out of CRIT, than spelldamage. here's what i mean. Item one: STATSSTATSSTATS Equip: Increases spell crit by 2% Equip: Increases spell damage by 40. Item two: STATSSTATSSTATS Equip: Increases spell crit by .40%. Equip: Increases spell damage by 75. Item one is better. HOMEWORK: Find out why that is.

i know and i don't even have a mage.
frostfire talents give it +150% raw crit damage bonus (meaning crits hit for 2.25 times normal damage).
crit always wins out in situations where it is actually giving you pretty much extra spell damage just for critting. more crit chance, more overall damage no matter what.
