The fan now folded across her back, held there by a strongly-woven gold braid that slung across her chest, Absimiloith was on one knee on the springy turf, holding the blue-black nestling to her and alternately scholding him and cooing over him.
"Don't you do that again!" she said, shaking the fluffy nestling slightly; unfortunately, he rather seemed to enjoy the bouncing movement, and Mili frowned. "I mean it, you! You've gotten into a lot of scrapes but this one takes the cake! A HYBRID DRAGON, I mean... How did you manage that?!?"
Elandri, his tail wagging, only grinned cheerfully up at Mili, his ears perky. < That was fun, huh Mili? > he asked, his fur still damp but apparently not dampening his mood. < Rio'll be happy we found one this far upriver! >
"Rio's gonna go crazy that you got into this," sighed Absimiloith, her eyes closing for a moment. "And you're gonna get in trouble. And probably me too."
Elandri's tail immediately ceased all movement. Trouble wasn't good at all! (Although apparently he got into it a lot.) Elandri's eyes suddenly became wide and wet... He was wibbling.
Mili took a moment, looking at Elandri in silence, and then bowed her head in defeat. "Don't do things like this, okay?" she said at last, scratching behind the cub's ears as she looked away. "You just worry me AND Rio. What're we supposed to do if you get hurt? You're just a little nestling, after all."
< Am not! > was Elandri's immediate response, before he reconsidered. < Well, maybe. But so's she! > And he gestured with his nose towards the approaching nestling, his tail now waving happily as he chirruped a greeting. < And she's really really tough! Yeah! Hi-Person-I-Don't-Know! >
((Ah, thank you. ^^))

Van hopped out of Sonja's arms and made her way over to the Graced and the random cub. She'd thought this girl would be interesting, being a Graced and all, but it seems she was just anither silly girl, the way she cooed over the dull cub. Still, she figured this might be worth investigating. The worst that could happen is that she be wasting her time, which wasn't that severe, since she had no other appointments whatsoever.
Van sniffed the feet of the odd girl. She was inclined to bite, to see what she'd do, but held back to avoid further damage. She backed up a bit, gazing up at the male. She crouched and suddenly jumped, her small jaws snapping a foot away from the nestling. She landed and only nearly stumbled. Wagging her tail she contemplated the height, it was quite an achievement.
"I apologize", Sonja said, "I have no doubt it was the fault of our own Vanguardian." Signy said nothing. Van turned in surprise at the silence, perhaps she'd gone just a bit too far... "Sorry", Van said in english, she wasn't really, not yet. But better safe then sorry. No knowing what this nian Graced would do. Besides, the picnic was ruined, she was hungry still. Maybe this nian had a home, one with food stored in a pantry. She had a taste of sweet, now she craved salt. Something like bacon, even if it did give her dog breath.
Van felt giddy at the prospect of food. She looked up at the nian and gave her most innocent smile. Better safe than hungry. Even Signy couldn't ignore this fact, Van felt her eyes wander over to her and the Graced. Sonja gave an annoyed huff. Good ol' Sonja was back. Now she just had to win Signy back with her utter cuteness.
She's so conceited! D8 She's turning out to be eeeevil!

< Van! Van! Van! VAN-GAR-DEE-EN! > said Elandri, trying the name out as he wriggled free from Mili's arms, all four paws touching down on the sod once again - If he was bothered at all by the near-miss, he didn't show it. More likely, Elandri thought the other nestling was just showing off her jumping skill.
< Wow, that was a high jump! >
.. Yes, that was it after all.
< And what a name! It's kind of long, yeah? You're still kind of little for it. VanVanVanVan-- >
"Landi, stop it."
With her fan once more in hand, Absimiloith absently bopped the Nian nestling on the head, square between the ears; though not overly hard, it caused Elandri to whine with something between annoyance and plain old 'hey, what was that for?' as Absimiloith stepped forward slightly, her tail just barely brushing along the ground.
"Apology accepted," she said, slinging the fan back onto her back once more, "but don't worry-- I'm sure Elandri did his part." She shot the nestling a look and Elandri curled up into an improbably fluffy ball, eyes growing larger beseechingly. Absimoloith ignored that.
"I am Absimiloith," she said, bowing sharply from the waist, "and I apologize in turn for Elandri's part in all of this." Glancing up the slope at the ruined picnic, and at Elandri brushing bits of crumbs from his fur, Mili went on, "Look, our camp is just a little while up the road, so to speak... I'm sure Riordan would want you to join us for dinner, to make up for the inconvenience and to thank you for looking out for Landi."
< Oh yeah, dinner! > Elandri was, once more, distracted, his thoughts now focused on delicious, savory food. < You should definitely definitely come! > he said, turning to Vanguardian and her two humans, tail wagging. < Rio's a really really good cook! And he just went today to the market, which is why Mili was supposed to be watching me, so there'll be plenty of food! And also we're supposed to have venison! Mm, venison! I like jerky, > he added, on a semi-related subject. < We have that too. >

Van didn’t wait for the Graced to point the way, she up and headed the way she saw the small one appear. Her humans and the two nian followed close behind. She may be brave, but she was still small. Therefore, she didn’t get very far before Sonja caught up with the tiring nestling and scooped her up into her arms. Van curled up and pressed closer to the girl, reciting a poem she once heard, an excerpt from a book she forgot the name of… “We are small but we are many, We are many we are small, We were here before you rose We will be here when you fall.”
The rhyme and the rhythm playing in her head almost lulled her to sleep, but she suddenly caught a scent in the wind. Food—meat hopefully. Vanguardian dragged herself out of her trance-like state and straightened up, still in Sonja’s arms. She perked her ears up and turned her head around like an owl, taking in her surroundings. Not much to take in, nothing new that is. There was a fox den, a bird nest, incase she felt like a midnight snack.
Van opened her maw wide in a yawn and something zipped right into her mouth. “Gah! Bleh!” Van hacked and coughed until she forced it up her throat and managed to spit it out. A bug, the nasty, crunchy kind. The Eastern nian may enjoy the little fliers, but Van couldn’t eat one if she were starving to death. Their innards weren’t even the right color! She suddenly had no appetite.
She began so wiggle out of Sonja’s arms, who decided to let go of the nestling before she began to use her claws. She grabbed the tiny cub by the back leg and put her down on the ground slowly. Van’s tail was wagging before she touched the ground and she was off like a cheetah as soon as she had. A magpie had the fright of her life when she awoke to find a nian licking her awake. Van grabbed the birds wings when it flapped away. She was left with a few black feathers with bloody roots, but no toy. She climbed down and went looking for another tree dweller to pick on.

One 'dweller' was certainly in a tree. But most likely not meant to be there. A smallish Nian nestling was curled in the crook of one of the branches of a tree. He was - as of yet - unbonded, and out here on his own. However, that wasn't to say he was not curious of his surroundings and such. Far from it, actually. He'd climbed up here last night to escape an owl, and here he had remained. But now was not the time for sleeping, it was the time for waking, and wake he did. Giving a stretch or two, and a yawn, he crept down the branch he'd been curled on, and hopped to the ground. It wasn't that far of a jump, and he used the branch's springiness as a bit of a booster. Happily, he started off once he hit the ground... coming nose-to-nose with another Nian - as he wasn't really looking where he was going. He gave a miao of protest, and landed flat on his rump, a sore look in his eyes. ~You did that on purpose!~ the nestling hissed, arching his back. ~That's not fair!~ But then the hissing died down, and the coughing started. It didn't stop the nestling from glaring at the female in a sour manner until he was finished, though.

Van was slightly surprised, not by the falling nestling--as she'd long ago learned what some people call "expecting the unexpected". But at the insolence of the thing! Van immediatly swung a paw at the nestling, and just as immediatly drew back as he started a coughing fit. She whimpered partly because she didn't want to catch what he had, and also because the idea of beating someone on unequal terms disgusted her.
"Sonja!" Vanguardian mewled. The girls seemed distracted--or simply ignoring her. "SONJA!" she called again, if they were ignoring her... But no, Sonja broke the conversation she was having and turned. Her eyes wandered lazily over to the sick nian. The girl's eyes shifted towards Van and she shrugged.
A while after Van giving her an acusing look and silence the girl sent over a mental message. "What do you want me to do? Van saw her girl's point. They themselves were homeless, they had no money, no set warm place at night. Come to think of it, their survival was a miracle this well up north. Which set Van's mind to either marry one of them off or head south as soon as possible.
Van grabbed the nestling, which had finished coughing, by the scruff of his neck and dragged him to the group. She really had no plans, which was rare for her. She figured she'd more or less dump him with the silly civilian folks when she and her humans had the chance. Signy was looking at her with renewed interest. Must think I'm caring or something... Van thought, mocking the naive girl.

Talbot squeaked, as he was unceremoniously dragged by the scruff of the neck to a location he didn't want to be in. His eyes narrowed, and he somehow extricated himself from the other's jaws once they were still again. He daintily arranged his paws and started grooming when he was finally free of her, not saying a word, although he had shown he was more than capable of speech. A little arrogant - or acting that way because he was afraid. It was hard to tell which. Regardless of either motive, he continued to clean himself without a word. First his right paw, then his left, then his left hind, and his right hind, ending up with his tail. Whatever was said to him could very well wait until he felt decent enough to reply. Baths weren't common in the woods, after all. And he sorely needed one.

Vanguardian watched the smallish nian wash himself with his tounge. She made a face, Must be a full course meal of dirt right there. Van would rather become a walking smudge than wash herself with like a cat. A peculiar male, delicate if anything. "Lovely," she mumbled.
Sonja came over with a comb and a glass vial containing some mixture of herbs or potion. That's my comb, Van tought. No way she'd have anyone bruch her fur with that until it was cleaned in hot water. "Will that work?" Van whispered to Sonja. The girl shrugged, "I wouldn't know, just have it. Not sure what it is." Van gave her a withering look. But again, it was all they had, just hope it was for sickness. It wasn't poison, it was in a medicinal vial. Wouldn't kill the nestling.
Sonja made to give the nian the medicine. Van watched warily. If he tried to bite her human, he'd become a sorry heap in the bottom of the river.

The smallish Nian didn't bite. Nor did he do much of anything to protest. The medication tasted HORRIBLE - but it was far better than the alternative. Once he'd had some of the awful stuff, he curled up on the ground again, and started to clean himself. The dirt wasn't very appetizing, but it was imperative - to him - that he be clean. Cleanliness, as they said... well, whatever it was next to. He liked to be that way. He didn't say ANYTHING to the two that had rescued him. And wouldn't, until every last scrap of dirt was out of his f-.... Oh. Okay, that would be the medication. He started to sway a little, back and forth. It was a lot of medicine for such a small Nian, and was causing the kitten to become very dizzy. He left off in his grooming, simply looked at the two... and collapsed. Asleep.

Vanguardian tried to begin a conversation with the other cub several times but couldn't manage to get a peep out of him. He was cleaning himself as if it were an obsession. And when he did finish, he fell asleep. Just like that. She nudged him with her paw, but she knew it wouldn't be any good. Besides, Sonja was making the next meal, whichever of the day it was, she'd lost track of the time.
"He's probably sick like that cause he licks himself," Van thought aloud. "All the germs he's eating and nasty little parasites." Not that she knew what any of those things were, she'd never seen any. But the so-called geniuses of the era spoke of it. Well, they were rich. Such successful people couldn't be too wrong. And they did manage to create a cure, so they must know something of it.

The young Nian slept for nearly three days. But managed each time, to move with the group and only fall asleep where he would be noticed and taken along if they continued on their way. At the end of the third day, he woke, hale and healthy. It must have been only a small flu or something of the like. The kittling was energetic now that he was not sick, and explored every inch of each new area near him. The cleaning of his fur was still an obsession, though - he didn't like to be dirty. Nor, apparently, did he like it when others were dirty, because he had the oddest habit of attempting to groom those around him as well. It was probably a fairly annoying habit at that, and he learned to curb it soon after. But he still insisted that HE was clean, even if he didn't speak.
