i think your ideas about hair growth are a little off. While we black folks do have thick, wavy hair, it does grow like other races of people. The rate at which hair grows has nothing to do with race, it has more to do with genetics. The only reason a lot of black women don't have "long" hair is because they perm it and do all kind of unnatural things to it, i.e. perms, weaves, etc. If we started wearing our hair in more natural styles, then there wouldn't be so many of us with damaged hair.

More natural styles as in nappy? When my hair gets really nappy and I go without perming it, it starts falling out or breaking off when I comb it. No matter how many times I wash or condition it it'll fall out. I'm also tender headed so combing it everyday doesnt really do anything, but give me a headache.

[i don't agree with all of that. sure, our hair grows. we're mammals, right?
many of us feel we have to go through or actually enjoy the thrill of the hunt for a perfect solution for making our hair "long." it's something we either stress about or we don't. other ethnicities on earth have their own "race-specific-physical-appearance-related-issues" as well.
some black folks believe and have actually noticed an increase in hair length when they take out braided-in weave or extensions. my hair personally has a cycle it goes through (depending on how well i take care of it) where it's noticeably longer right after i freshly relax new growth, then it grows a bit more as more new growth starts to appear after 6 weeks of being relaxed. 3nodding my hair is constantly growing and is getting longer each time i relax it, depending upon how long i go between perms. i'm not going to deny though, that some damage occurs as well. after all, nature never intended "perms." xd
the point of that story is that once you're born, that's your hair: gender and genetics are out of the way. you're now a female or male with the genetics you'll have forever. from that point on, it's how you take care of your hair that makes it (grow) or breaks it (off). xd YOU have to find something that works for you. If you hate the look of natural hair styles (or your hair hates natural styles), if you think it looks nappy, then what's wrong with that?? reach for that no-lye super home relaxer kit in the black-haircare aisle. if you like dreds, rock dreds, man. i personally love that we (meaning humans) have so many different ways to wear our hair. especially these days: when white girls can rock cornrows and white guys can wear dreds; black guys can headbang with shoulder length straight locks while black girls can toss back long strawberry-blonde tendrils.
and this isn't limited to black and white, kids! smile ]

[edit: i would make my own topic on this, but who needs more than one topic to discuss the "hair thing"? perhaps the creator of the thread could just change the title...?]

Mrs. Isley
Friday night while i was in a store on campus buying dinner a girl came up to me and asked me if my hair is real. Now, grant you, i do have what could be considered long hair that i wear in braids. But, the way she reacted when i told her my hair was real was really disturbing. After i said yes, she said wow, i've gotta get some weave so i can keep up. Now, am i wrong for being slightly disturbed or am i just being insensitive?

Answer to my question
Reaction the situation
Do black girls obsess to much over hair?
Why is it such an issue still?
Random thoughts

[this reminds me of a book discussion i saw. i can't remember the author's name, but the book had something to do with "rent-a-negro." mwaha. i'll try to find more info to share. 3nodding ]
[also, to answer the question: nah, i don't think you think you were being insensitive, do you? and who am i to tell you that you're wrong for being "disturbed?" what am i to do? tell you to suck it up and go do some push-ups or something?? xd ]
