It was what he didn't hear that nagged at him. True it was the changing of the seasons, but still. The night life, such as the crickets and other insects should have been out on such a clear night nothing would stay inside unless there was good reason to. Pace still at a walk, but it was brisk, Nikolas wanted away from there and quickly before whatever was lurking about came out of its hiding place.
"Trees do make wonderful sleeping places, but their cover only lasts for so long until there's need to find a new place until the tree has recovered." Nikolas said as he remained on the edge, if anything, he could get her to flee when the time came. "Also you should keep tight hold of your memories, for someday you might wake up without them and wonder what ever happened to it."
Stopping he looked back before off to one side, ears flicking atop his head he listened. It was quite, too quite, even the winds seemed scared of whatever it was that was out there. Soon something moved, something just behind them on his side, the soft steps of paws reached his ears as they softly rustled the grass. a sort of hiss escaped him as he started walking again, keeping an eye to the side, while also trying to keep Yazmina near. Need be she could fly, he could only remain in the ground and hope to out run whatever it was.
"Don't look back, whatever it is, sounds like its following." He whispered, "Don't look back and don't get too nervous. It will sense your fear and use it to its advantage." He knew that he himself was getting nervous, but he could use it as strength and fight whatever it is that follows.

Don't get nervous? It was far too late for that. If he was nervous -- and yes, she could tell -- then she had no hope of remaining completely calm. She wasn't a predator, never had been and never would. She had no fangs to defend herself with. Yes, her horn might serve as a decent weapon and yes, she could lash out with her hooves and fight back if she had to, but she'd never been in that sort of situation. She didn't want to be now.
So she stuck close, eyes always moving, ears swiveling toward even the smallest sound. "Don't look back," she echoed in a whisper. Of course it made her want to. Her back itched at the withers as if she could feel whatever it was staring at that spot. They were both so bright against the nighttime that they'd be easy to track and follow. But she wouldn't look back.
"Would you--would you live off of the tree? Eat its leaves? Is that why it wouldn't last, do you think?" Conversation would help keep her calm. Calmer, anyway.

Nikolas always gave uneasy glances to the side away from Yazmina, before looking forward again. Ears twisting themselves backwards he remained silent for a time. He could hear their pursuer, they were close and getting closer. There was more then one now, their dark forms hidden within the shadows biding their time until they had encircled the pair. Keep moving, that was all he could think, keep moving and don't stop for anything. That was what they were waiting for, for Yazmina and himself to stop giving the advantage to them.
"I wouldn't eat the leaves from the tree, nor would my brother. But those we care for would given if there's nothing more to eat along the ground." He answered, black eyes straying to the side again. "But there's other things that would make the tree lose its charm as a shelter. Heavy winds and rain could shred the leaves and leave the branches nothing, but twigs over head. Also there's the change in seasons, when the spirits around here are said to put the trees to rest until the warmth comes back." Not that he really believed in these spirits, perhaps they were what followed them.
Stopping he looked back, something sounded in the distance, a howl. One that wasn't quite so canine, nor did it sound very happy. Turning his head from side to side, the shadow's started to grow faster in their paces, they were here. After him no doubt, or after the mare, he didn't know. Lost in his own thoughts, another howl ripped him from them to side step a leaping figure that came to a crashing halt where he had once stood.
Careless, he snorted to himself before nudging at Yazmina to run. His own pace picking up to more then a trot, but not quite a full out gallop. Behind him he could head the howls and barks of the wolves that followed them. "Get ready to fly, one of us is getting out of here. I haven't the luxury of flight, but at least you will get out unharmed." Nikolas said between breaths.

He had a good point. The changing seasons and the weather that came with it would make a tree a less than ideal living space. In spring and summer, when the worst that came was the occasional rain, then maybe it would work better, but not now with snow and ice and bitter winds.
Then again, she had her reasons not to be thinking clearly. They were being stalked. Chased and herded. Her hide was twitching with the urge to be in the sky already. Still, Nikolas hadn't abandoned her, so she'd return the favor unless things got really bad.
Like a wolf leaping out of the darkness at Nikolas. That sudden movement and sudden stop made her squeal in alarm and rear back onto her hind hooves briefly. When she came down again, she didn't need Nikolas' prompting to be ready to fly. Her wings were more than ready. She ran after him, keeping her attention on the beasts coming behind, but if they leapt at her, she'd be skyborn in an instant.
"I'll get help," she promised as she ran. "I'll come back, if I have to go!"

Nikolas wasn't really wanting to keep his mind on much, but getting out of there and away from those that pursued them. A black eye always looking back then looking toward Yazmina, asking himself why he hadn't left her behind. Not his nature he guessed, he wouldn't have left his brother behind, nor did it seem that he would leave this one behind either. Swerving to the side, the looming shadows seemed to thicken as more black figured raced along within them. Grinding his teeth together he broke off from Yazmina for a moment and drove his hooves at the nearest figure making it yelp and back off before his route brought him back to where he had been a moment ago.
"You should go, now!" Nikolas said as he came back to be near Yazmina. "Don't worry about me, Like I've said, I'm merely a shadow." There was a grin before he snapped at Yazmina's ankles to try and get her to lift off the ground. "I will lead them away, and drive them back into teh shadows where they belong."
Breaking away from Yazmina again, not knowing what she would do, he could only hope that she would get out of there. Leaping through the shadows, his coat still a blazing white spot amongst the blackness, he wove through the trees that had appeared near by. Behind him he could hear the snarls, yips and howls of the wolves that followed him. Glancing back he noted the eyes that flickered through the shadows like the stars in the sky.
"Good, follow me you mangy things." Nikolas shouted at the wolves as he turned sharply and headed for the farthest edge of the grove and breaking back out into the open, trying to bide time for Yazmina to get away from the danger...

She went. Unfolding her wings fully, she gathered herself and sprang upward, avoiding getting nipped by Nikolas or a wolf alike. Wings beating powerfully and stirring the air beneath her a bit, she drove herself upward into the sky, out of the range of predators.
But she didn't abandon him. She was out of danger unless the wolves likewise had wings, but Nikolas wasn't so lucky. From above, it was harder to see the sleek, dark shapes the wolves made in the nighttime, but Nikolas was impossible to lose, so she flew with him, over him, keeping watch so to speak.
If nothing else, she could dive at the wolves if they didn't break off on their own.

Glancing upwards, he noted that Yazmina remained over head, well, at least she was out of reach of the teeth that were nipping at his own heels. Kicking back he managed to make one of the wolves yelp before it was replaced with another that got in a n** at his legs. Others were ganging up as he was slowing slightly, sides heaving some, he dodged and wove. Trying to lose his pursuers, but they were relentless in their hunt for the glowing white stallion, though some probably thought that the mare looked more tender if the stallion hadn't gotten her to leave. Weaving again, his footing caught and Nikolas nearly ate dirt, a couple wolves spring at his back. Deflecting one, the other reached it's mark on his back.
"Alright little wolf, lets see you hang on." Nikolas hissed as he bucked, the wolf's claws dug into his already pale sides. "Very good, but time for you to leave."
Charging himself forward he rolled knocking the wolf off and it laid motionless for a moment one the ground before picking itself up and dashing the other way. What was left of the pack gathered around Nikolas, hackles raised and teeth revealed, they seemed ready to tear him limb from limb. Rearing high, Nikolas really did wish he had the gift of flight, or at least something other then just his hooves to fight. Coming back down, the wolves closed their circle all leaping at him at once. Ok now he did wish his brother were there, kicking backwards he managed to knock away a couple wolves before three landed on him.
A cry erupted from his throat as the fangs of one of the wolves dug into the base of his neck, another into his shoulder. Shaking them off he escaped their circle only to be followed again. Crimson stained his white coat and the scent was in the air. Black eyes flashed as a lust deep within them seemed to be awakened. Turning he came to face the few wolves that were left, head low and a hoof pawing at the ground. Nikolas didn't seem like the same Stallion he had been a few moments ago. Eyes darker and his stance more predatory, Nikolas looked ready to kill...

She could do it. She had to. There was no one else and too many wolves and Nikolas was already bleeding. Oh, this wasn't at all the way she'd wanted the night to go when she decided to go starwatching. She hadn't expected an attack. She was lucky Nikolas had come out when he did or she'd have been the one down there bleeding.
So she could do this. She took a deep breath and gathered up all her courage and tucked her wings against her sides, diving toward the attacking wolves. "Leave. Him. Alone!" she shouted at the beasts as she swooped closer. She struck out at the nearest, clipping in the shoulder with a hoof. She touched ground for only a second, then leapt up again, ready to circle around and go after the next.

Nikolas snapped at the wolves that came closer to him, his own fangs drawing blood from the beasts he could get a hold of and toss a good distance away. Most yelped and ran, others came back for more punishment. When Yazmina dove and clipped at one of the wolves, others started turning and leaping toward her when she came close enough to attempt to grasp a hold of. Growling himself, Nikolas reared back and came down on whatever happened to be beneath him, with a few more yelps, the rest of the pack halted their assault and fled back to the trees and the shadows from where they had come from. Nikolas was left standing over one of he wolves that didn't make out of there alive. Sides heaving and blood still seeping from the wounds on his back and sides, he still didn't look like himself.
There was still a fire in his eyes as he looked down at the dead wolf at his hooves. Retched thing, didn't even deserve the death it got, he wouldn't find a meal with that one, the blood was already growing cold. Worthless, stepping away from it he looked back to Yazmina, his tongue appearing from beneath his lips the lap at the blood that stained them. Looking away he turned to lick the blood away from his wounds. Shivers ran through his as he swayed a bit, the scent of blood still hung thick in the air around him. He had to leave that place before the wolves got the courage up to come back for another round. He wouldn't survive another round if it was as bad as the first. Turning away from the blood stained area, Nikolas proceeded to leave that place before anything else happened. Willing himself to move, and control his urge to kill anything else that came close...
If he could at least. He know his brother would have his head for this one for sure. "You know, you could have just left." He muttered quite loudly so that Yasmina could hear him unless she had landed and was walking with him again. "Perhaps you should have..." There was some strain to his voice as he was still trying to control his need, the wounds would heal in due time, but his hunger wouldn't be as patient...

She hadn't really thought the whole diving thing through. She realized that far too late, when she'd drawn the wolves' attention and put herself in harm's way again. She'd meant to scare them off, maybe drive them away, but not make herself a target. Still, she'd acted. She'd done something rather than just hovering safely above them while Nikolas fought and bled.
She let out a surprised squeal when one of the wolves caught her, scoring a long scratch on her flank. She flew higher sharply, then turned back and down. How dare they?! She wheeled in time to see Nikolas' last attack that trampled a wolf under his hooves and to see the rest of the pack dash away, either to retreat or regroup.
What they were doing didn't matter as long as they stayed away. When she was certain they'd gone, she landed lightly and headed toward Nikolas, concern in her eyes, ears twisting and tipping, as constantly on the move as her eyes.
"I couldn't leave," she told him. "I wouldn't just leave you alone, not with so many. Not with you fighting. And you're hurt!" She fussed, stepping closer still. The sight of him licking his wounds didn't trouble her. It just made her all the more glad she'd stayed. "It would have been wrong of me to go. She hesitated very slightly before saying the next thing, which was, "Not when I might be able to help."

Nikolas stopped after a time when his shoulder ached too much to go on any longer. There was also the scent of another's blood in the air, he could tell it wasn't his own. Looking the mare beside him over, he noticed that Yamina had suffered a wound from that fight. Pesky wolves and their always need to kill, but that was how they survived like everyone else around that place. Eyes transfixed on her wound, he hadn't noticed that he was hungry, not that badly at least. Until now... He broke away from the scratch on her flank as Yazmina's voice broke his trance.
"These are nothing." He said looking over his wounds, noticing that she was starting to fuss over him.
Bite wounds marked his back, ankles and neck. It was a wonder he didn't collapse soon after he had been injured. His coat shivered ever now and again as he tried to keep standing, but ended up having to lay down. His hunger had to be sated later. He didn't think he could move for at least until the next night. Maybe.
"Besides, how can you help?" he asked looking her over noting the horn that was on her forehead. Oh, that might be the way.

"Nothing?" That many wounds, that much of an attack, wouldn't have ever been nothing, in her opinion. Not even if Nikolas had been twice as big. There'd been a lot of wolves and only him fighting them, really. Her little distracting attacks hadn't spared him getting bitten or scratched, that she could see.
And he confirmed it when he folded his legs and laid down. That, more than anything else so far, worried Yazmina. It wasn't safe to lie down out here, not when the wolves could come back. She snorted nervously and stamped a hoof, not at him, just to get out some of the nerves. Her wings twitched and her ears hadn't stopped moving, but most of her attention was on him.
She lowered her head a bit. "I could try to heal you a little." She did have the horn, after all. "But I'm not very practiced at it. I wouldn't make it worse, though, and it might be enough to get you away from here." Out of immediate danger.

Too late, Nik was down and wasn't looking on getting back up for at least a while now. His own ears twitched, listening to their surroundings, but didn't hear anything. So he claimed it safe to himself to rest a bit, head laying on the grass, he remained still. Letting his wounds slowly stop bleeding, though would have helped if he hadn't gotten into this mess in the first place. Well so much for searching for another living quarters that night.
"This place is as good as any to sleep the day away." He muttered closing his dull black eyes. "By nightfall I will be..." Raging and ready to eat anything that walks. he thought to himself finishing his sentence in more silence then out loud.
He opened an eye and looked toward Yazmina as she stomped a hoof, she seemed more nervous now then ever. It wasn't like he was going anywhere, the wolves were gone. He didn't expect them to be coming back any time soon, not that night anyways. So he took this chance to rest, sleep and feed later on. Yazmina's voice still entered his ears as she mentioned having healing abilities, that he could have guessed from the horn on her head, but he didn't look forward to having her try... Well ok, he would have to or worse could occur to the wounds.
"Alright, but don't expect much. I don't know if I could move even if there were more wolves coming after us." He gave a jagged chuckle. "Then again, I don't expect them to be coming back. They are more then likely feasting on their dead back there, scavengers, family hardly means anything when it comes to food."

Yazmina shuddered. She didn't particularly want to think about the wolves eating anything, much less dining on the corpses of their fallen packmates. She wouldn't think about it. She'd just put it out of her mind. If she could. She had more important things to do.
Like healing Nikolas, whether he thought it would do any good or not. She was certain she couldn't make him feel completely better, but any little bit would be of benefit, she told herself. She calmed herself deliberately, took a deep breath, then stepped closer. "You'll have to tell me," she warned him, "if I hurt you at all. I don't want that. Not even a little. So don't be brave and silent.
Then she closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating on the few lessons she'd been given about finding the talent within her to heal wounds, then opened her eyes and lowered her head, touching just the barest tip of her horn to Nikolas's bite wounds.
There was mostly warmth and maybe a very faint glow, more visible in the nighttime air, but mostly warmth as she coaxed the skin to heal.

Raising his head some, Nikolas watched Yazmina as she came closer to him. He hadn't any thought in mind on letting her help him, but in his weakened state he hadn't any choice to let her try and heal his wounds. Eyes watching the white mare, he snorted when she mentioned him not being the brave and silent if she happened to hurt him. Pah, he's had worse wounds then these little scratches and n** marks. Try silver blades and such like that, those hurt worse then hell. Shifting his position away from her just before her horn touched one of his wounds.
Bearing a bit of fang, he remained quite as he could feel the warmth from her horn seeping over his cold body. The wounds were indeed slowly sealing themselves under her care, though the warmth was more then he could stand. Snapping at the air he laid his head back down as to not suddenly up snap at her intently to get it to stop. But one by one, the wounds stopped bleeding and were sealed enough to ward off infection and heal on their own.
"Pain is only a friend to me and my brother. We are not scared of it and don't let it rule our emotions." Nikolas sated quite blandly as he watched the backs of his eye lids. "So no matter if you had hurt me, I've felt worse pains then these scratches and n** marks. You could stab me with your horn and it wouldn't feel that horrid. Might sting like hell, but it would be healed quite well within a nights time."
Rolling over onto his belly once more, he pulled himself back to his hooves. Shaking out his coat and hair. He let it fall back into place before looking around carefully, though his eye landing once more on the scratch on Yazmina's flank. That was going to leave a mark, shame it didn't look deep enough to bleed. Pity for him, good fortune for her as she was somewhat safe from his hunger...
