Energizerbuni Shelcombakasfire Where the hell are the forum buttons? I'm too lazy to type out bbcode for quotes. So, Fel, IT'S ******** BALLS. I can't believe preposition 8 is leading. What the hell, California, what the hell? Who let all the bigots in? This is such bullshit. There shouldn't even be a debate on gay marriage - unless straight people also cannot get married. please language! i knwo you feel strongly but tone it down a bit please. [thanks] lol. Made me laugh. I feel like I should maybe be reprimanded a little more often.

you must understand I am for gay rights.. I belive everyone should have that right to be married. I was explaining what people who saying yes , were using here and really what they would have taught in the schools. I dont know what people are afraid of. I did not mean to offend anyone just to clarify both sides.

Quote: prop 8 got voted against because the Morman church and other churches put up more money..Than the other side. Not everyone in california vote for the prop. So of us belive in tolerance and love your neighbor.. I live in California. They used fear; fear that your children will be taught in schools about marriage.specifically gay marriage. Religon in the schools in california are presented with each religon and what they belive. No write or wrong answers. If gay marriage were taught in the schools in would have been generalized look theres different types of families grandma and grandpa raising children, single parents and children.. etc.. No write or wrong answers. People don't vote on sensitive issues like that based on who had more money... When it comes down to two political candidates who are very similar, yes, they're going to vote for the one with more effective advertising. However, people aren't going to randomly change their opinions on something that most feel as strongly about as same-sex marriage just because they see a television ad. Or whatever.
In general, prop 8 received enough media attention that most people in California knew what it was. However, very few voted on it at all. In all likelihood, those who would have voted against it thought it was a frivolous thing and didn't even bother taking the time, while those who were for it thought it was very important indeed.
I am extremely angry about it. But four and a half million people are not a representative sample of California's massive population. If only two and a half million or so voted for it, there's no way that was in any way a product of the various churches spending money on it.
Also, I feel a bit put off that you make it seem as though all churches are for prop 8. I'm not religious, but I went to church for the most part of my life, and the Lutheran church I was at not only tolerated homosexuality, but treated it as equal to any pairing between two different sexes.

i think it's just wrong that they passed it. So what if gay people wanna get married? They should be allowed to do so. That whole teaching kids about it is probably just a myth. Have we become so morally uptight that we should just walk all over their right to get married and don't care if they a mouthful of dirt and blood? I'm just saying that they should revoke prop 8 and never bring it back into existence again.

(if there are any gays here please dont be offended) but i think prop 8 shoulda been passed because gay marriage is a sin in the bible... yea i understand that gays cant help the way they feel bout dating the opposite sex...kinda like how straights cant help the way they feel about dating the same sex..i understand all that...but God makes final decisions and he says its still not ok so i would also be doing wrong too if i was supporting sin...

If you're going to go the religious route about this:The Bible only demands procreation. If a gay guy gives to s sperm bank, I'd like to think he's absolved. Also, the key element of the Bible seen throughout the book as opposed to just in a singular passage of implications would be the policy of "acceptance". Judging others and telling them how they have sinned is acting in place of God and therefore a far greater sin than that of allowing people happiness. Moreover, if you're already convinced they're going to burn in hell anyway then why make their lives on earth so miserable? I find it a far greater sin receiving gratification and glee from others' unhappiness. And like you said, you can't help your feelings for someone. If it were so great a sin would God have allowed it to happen? Seriously. Moreover, THE BIBLE HAS NO PLACE IN POLITICS. America is a country that allows freedom of religion, so the bible shouldn't even be mentioned thus making your point moot, anyway.

It's like you've completely ignored the entire conversation we've all been having on why banning gay marriage is unconstitutional. You're basing your decision on your religion, but not everyone believes the same religion as you. Many people don't believe in the Bible at all. In fact many people don't believe in God at all, and in the US this is perfectly allowed. The whole reason they have that part about separation of church and state in the constitution is to keep a religion from pushing it's religious beliefs onto people who don't believe the religion. I don't think being gay is a sin, so I don't think you should be able to tell me I can't marry just because you think it is. That's absolute bullshit, and if you can't see that then you're more of an idiot than I thought.

I heartily agree with Krego, and should point out that unless I'm very much mistaken, he's religious.
I, on the other hand, am pretty much the opposite. I was raised a Christian, and the rest of my family still is (so don't tell me it's because of the way I was raised), but I came on my own to the conclusion that I do not believe to be a God. I'm not going to go into why here, as that's well outside what this particular discussion is about and as it's about beliefs, it's not really a point that can be argued.
However, the United States Constitution quite clearly states:Quote: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Which I believe any American should recognize as the first amendment. Now I'd like to point out that first phrase, as it deals more specifically with religion. A law banning same-sex marriage for religious reasons (and that's really the only reason anyone would want to ban it) would clearly interfere with my right to exercise my religion (or rather, my total lack thereof). It would also establish the three major religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity) as a basis for morality, which is also against the Constitution.
In short, I don't really give a damn about what your personal beliefs are. However, I don't think that anyone has a right to blatantly disregard the Constitution. (By the way, that's called felony.)

That was kind of my point. Banning gay marriage is unconstitutional. Just because you believe it is wrong doesn't mean you can tell other people they can't do it. Religion is the reason you think it is wrong, and religion has no place in politics. And I didn't actually cuss in my last post. You, on the other hand, cursed twice. Unless you don't count the one where you quoted me. I've cursed quite a bit in the past yeah, but I don't recall you being much better. Are you just trying to be a goody guy now since you're using religion as your argument? And yeah I did use the word idiot, but it was conditional. You're only and idiot if you think that gay marriage should be banned because it says so in the bible. You're only an idiot if you think your religious beliefs should govern the rights of people who aren't part of your religion. You have every right to believe that gay marriage is wrong, but you have no right at all to ban it. Now if you can wrap your head around those politics, and realize that banning gay marriage would be unconstitutional, then you are not an idiot, but until you understand that truth an idiot is the only thing you can be. Edit: Here...let me give you a new example that might apply a little more to you. My new religion believes that being black is a sin. We've decided to vote on a proposition to ban black people from the US. Does that sound at all constitutional to you? Keep in mind that this isn't so much about race as it is about religious belief. Also keep in mind that in the bible you refer to there were specific people who had their skinned darkened because they were evil. (Hopefully you can see how painfully obvious it is that the bible is a terrible reference for decisions in politics.) If you need any bible references I'm sure I could find quite a few.

i agree with Shelcombakasfire. I'm Catholic, but i believe that we've twisted the bible to our own purposes. We should accept gay people and not deny them their rights. Have we really become so bad that we've denied average humans their god-given rights? It's like saying we should just take all legal Mexicans and ship them off to Mexico. If we're going to deny the gays rights, we might as well deny others their rights, right? I know that someone is going to say that all their other rights are protected, but we should give them full rights. We shouldn't freak out over a little thing such as marriage. Like Shelcombakasfire said, they still are fulfilling their marriage commitment if they go to a sperm bank. Men will give the sperm and then the lesbians would use that sperm to give birth. Let's just accept them and treat them as equals.
