Next year I'm planning on starting a compost pile. My parents are really looking forward to gardening, so I'm going to join in. My goal is to start with some simple herbs, but only use compost to fertilize them. No MiracleGro crap.

Well, this past year I did reasonably well with my back porch potted herb garden- I think I'll get a few boxes to hook over the railing to add a bit more space, and a few more pots (hope the next-door neighbors don't mind as I start encroaching on their side of the porch xd )
So I'll need to replace the herbs that didn't make it inside, grow about four times as much basil as I did this past summer, and maybe try growing some peas, and some zuchinni, and maybe tomatoes?
And hope those strawberries bear more fruit this year now that they've had a chance to grow smile

And in the meantime I need to find a decent indoor spot for my worm compost bin. Actually it seems to be doing fine in the kitchen- no repeat occurrences of the Great Worm Escape of '07, so perhaps I can keep it right in the kitchen all winter long.

Well, this year me and a bunch of other good people are gonna work to try and start up an organic student-run farm at my university.

Yep, the irony is that we're an A&M university, we should be friendly to the idea of having an on-campus farm, but we do run into our mess of obstacles.

But it's happening, you better believe I'm gonna see that through, it's my job to see it through.

Hopefully we'll be getting a house this year and having a big enough yard for a garden is a must. Luckily, we'll be moving May or before, so maybe I can get started planting a few things for the summer if the soil is good enough. Or maybe start a square foot garden and be easy on myself 3nodding

i went to whole paycheck [aka whole foods] to get some basil [among other things] for a vegan artichoke & pasta dish i was making, and the only basil they had there was live basil. it came in a bag with water and soil, and you could see the roots poking out. considering the basil plant was just as expensive as the packaged-in-plastic, not-so-fresh basil leaves they sell at randall's [grocery chain where i live], i decided to get it.

today i planted it.

which is a big flipping deal, since i don't garden whatsoever.

i went to lowe's and got some seeds for other plants. i'll plant them tomorrow, which is imbolc [i'm pagan, teehee] and that's a imbolc-y thing to do. imbolc celebrates the return of the sun and the first signs of spring, among other things, like the start of sowing the first harvest. tomorrow i'll bless the seeds in the course of the ritual and then plant them in the new pots i got for them [:

are you in college station? i have a bunch of friends that are going there next year for school [i'm a senior in high school]. they're not eco-friendly people, unfortunately.

anyway.
i plan on doing the same thing wherever i wind up going to school if there's not one already, which there probably will be, seeing as the colleges i applied to are almost all in the Northwest [aka Land of Tree Huggers]. XD

If you need some help with your water garden, let me know. We've had one for 15 years. The start-up time can be pretty frustrating, but mostly it's a lot of hurry-up-and-wait while the system balances. You will love it!!!!

I just got done planting my orchard.
I have two crab apples,
two apricots,
one ranger peach tree,
two Georgia peach trees,
one peach tree that I started off from a pit from Wal-Mart XD,
two medley plum trees,
one wild plum tree,
one green pear tree,
a pecan tree
a black walnut tree,
a hazelnut tree,
a granny apple smith tree,
a dwarf surcrop nectarine,
four cherry trees,
a brown turkey fig tree,
a kadota fig tree,
a golden apple tree,
and a red delicious apple tree.

I still want more trees, I love them!

heart

I also have four blueberry bushes, I saved them from Wal-Mart.

Also I'm in zone 8 in North Texas, you can grow pretty much anything, too bad I cant grow any oranges or bananas though.

zomg that IS an orchard!

i'm so impatient for the 4-5 year wait for fruit trees to bear.

we planted a peach tree last year.

Homegrown fruit is good.....my blueberries, started two years ago, are slowly ramping up. The deer decided my raspberries were food last winter so I might not get very many fruit from them this year...except for that giant thorny blackberry....they didn't touch that.

Quince bushes are flowering!

I like watching my trees grow.
=D
there like my babies, ok that sounded creepy.
XD
I still want to plant tons of grapes, black berries, raspberries, and dewberries along the fences.
I also want a persimmon tree and a pomegranate tree.
Now that would be awesome!
