Multiplying Spell
November 30th, 2008

Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Juniper

Today marks the Feast of St. Andrew, the patron saint of fishermen and mariners. Andrew was a fisherman from Galilee who became one of Jesus’ first disciples. He is well remembered for the Bible story where he participated in creating a feast for a crowd out of only five loaves of bread and a couple of fish. He reminds us of the miracles in our own lives whereby positive intention causes good things to multiply. Think of something you need more of in your life, be it love, money, faith, or compassion. Thoughtfully prepare a stew of fish and vegetables as you welcome the goodness and magic of St. Andrew into your home. Toast him with a glass of red wine. Then stir in the magic of multiples by reciting:

A loaf of bread,
This fine fish stew,
A glass of wine
To toast Andrew
And bid him come,
Sit by my side
And dine with me
As I confide
A wish that
At the very least
Will grow from fallow
Into feast.

State your wish.

A New Chance at Freedom Spell
December 2nd, 2008

Color of the day: Gray
Incense of the day: Cedar

Bona Dea was a Roman goddess exclusive to women. She was prayed to by slaves seeking freedom and by women who needed aid in health matters. Make a paper chain out of construction paper. Place it around an object you wish to be free of, such as a bad relationship or a job (a picture of where you work, or of the person you wish to be free of, will suffice). Around the chain of paper, fix an altar with a variety of food, and wine with two glasses. Take some deep breaths and center yourself and chant:

Bona Dea, free me,
From this [object],
Release me.
Bona Dea, free me
From these chains
That hold me.
Bona Dea, free me,
So that I can be me.

Take the chain in your hand and break it into pieces. Rip the picture into pieces as well. Now sweep these into the fire, sit down and eat. Pour the wine and invite the good goddess, making sure to toast her and your newfound freedom.

Budget Talisman
December 4th, 2008

Color of the day: Green
Incense of the day: Jasmine

By now, spending for the holidays has kicked into high gear. Try this to help you curb your spending and help yourself stay on a reasonable budget. Light an orange candle on your altar (for control) and ring it with white shells. Dress the candle with the scent of mulberries to help you focus and maintain your will to avoid spending more than you can afford. When you go out to do your holiday shopping, take a shell along to remind you of your goals. If you need extra strength, anoint the shell with mulberry oil before leaving your home.

Yuletide Romance Spell
December 5th, 2008

Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Violet

Friday is ruled by the planet Venus, and concerns such things as romance, love, fertility, and birth. The day’s name comes from the Norse goddess of love, Freya. She is ideal to invoke for winter romances. The holiday season provides opportunities to meet new people at parties and other social occasions. Use this spell to draw attention to yourself. You will need a necklace of gold or amber, two candles of pink or gold, and amber essential oil. Light the candles and hold the necklace between them, saying:

Golden Freya,
Lady of grace,
Shine your beauty
Upon my face.
Sun of fire,
Necklace of gold,
Send me someone
Whom I can hold.
Gentle goddess,
Daring and free,

Let all their eyes
Be drawn to me.

Accept invitations to all promising events. When you go, wear the necklace and a dab of amber oil. Freya’s grace will attract good attention.

Dream Pillow
December 6th, 2008

Color of the day: Indigo
Incense of the day: Pine

All things are possible during dreaming. It has been called the gateway to power and has been used to gain insight and foreknowledge for thousands of years. Dream pillows are a wonderful way to jumpstart the kinds of dreams you want to have. All you need is a small cloth bag that can be closed (or stitched) completely and the right herbs. Then put the bag under your pillow and leave it there while you sleep. For gentle dreams, place lavender, rose, and chamomile in your bag. For visionary dreams, use lavender, passionflower, and nutmeg. If you want happy dreams, try mullein, lemon balm, and elderflower. And if you are looking for passion in your dreaming, add rose petals and jasmine flowers with a few drops of sandalwood pure essential oil.

Defense Against Surprise Attack
December 7th, 2008

Color of the day: Amber
Incense of the day: Frankincense

To be ready so that gossip and verbal attacks aren’t a surprise, try this spell. Gather together patchouli incense for its protection and grounding powers, a tincture with nettle for its bodily cleansing ability and prickly defensive nature, a small glass of water, and a small black candle in a glass holder. After performing your regular devotions and asking the elements and your deities to be present, light the black candle and, holding up to spirit, chant, “Fire and black hold them back, glass so clear keep protection near.” Put a couple of drops of the nettle tincture in the glass of water and, holding up to spirit, chant, “By the power of nettle, keep me on my mettle. With water so smooth, my feelings please soothe.” Drink the water, envisioning your resistance to attack being strengthened. Thank the spirits. Allow the candle to burn down completely and bury the remaining wax in the ground. Repeat as necessary.

Pagan Activism
December 9th, 2008

Color of the day: Maroon
Incense of the day: Ginger

Today marks International Anti-Corruption Day, the anniversary of a conference against corruption held by the United Nations in Mexico, 2004. The intent is to send the message that combating corruption is the responsibility of all governments. There are traditions of Witches who have a history of combining magic with activism, and today is the day to tap into that activist spirit. What is your cause? Whether you care about the rights of women in oppressive regimes or about reducing the smog index in your own city, today is a day to take action and put some magic behind it. Write a letter to your editor, or to your representative. Make a phone call. Then light a candle and speak to Lady Liberty. Ask her to tip her scales towards justice. Place the candle in a window, where other people can see the light you’re sending out in the world.

A Yule Tree Blessing
December 10th, 2008

Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Honeysuckle

Did you remember to bless your Yule tree? Here is a quick and easy waxing Moon blessing that even children could do. To bless the Yule tree, purchase or make a gold Sun-shaped ornament. It could be rustic and handmade by the children or store-bought and fancy. Hang this ornament last upon the tree and repeat the following lines:

The evergreen is a tree
Full of magical lore,
It brings prosperity and Charm as in days of yore.
Now bless our home,
Bringing us good cheer and Solstice fun,
While we celebrate the return Of the newly born Sun.

Full Moon Messages
December 12th, 2008

Color of the day: Pink
Incense of the day: Cypress

The winter Moons are a wonderful time for divination and spiritual self-study. December’s Full Moon is known as the “Cold Moon,” or “The Moon of Long Nights.” As the light of the Sun becomes weaker, night magic and the power of the Moon becomes more potent. This water spell combined with the energies of the Full Moon will enable you to scry with better success. First set up your scrying altar in a private space where you’ll be undisturbed. Cover the altar with black cloth and fill your cauldron half full of spring water. You may decide to place a quartz crystal or a piece of obsidian in the bottom of the cauldron. Place a silver candle next to the cauldron. Next draw a warm bath. Light a few candles and add three drops of lemongrass, three drops of mimosa, and three drops of magnolia to your bath water. These oils are powerful aids for psychic ability. Swirl the oils around with your receptive hand. Lean back in the tub and soften your gaze. As you breathe in the essences, feel the watery parts of you being drawn to the Moon. Imagine the tides, the sea creatures, yearning toward the Moon. You are yearning toward the Moon. You, too, are a creature of the Moon. The Moon has a message for you. When you feel you must leave the bath and discover the message, approach the scrying table. Turn the lights off and light the silver candle. Cast a magic circle around your space, then seat yourself at the table. Keep a soft, unfocused gaze. Empty your mind of doubt and worry. Just breathe and watch. You will see images. The Moon has spoken.

Betwixt and Between Meditation
December 31st, 2008

Color of the day: Topaz
Incense of the day: Lavender

New Year’s Eve is neither the current year nor the coming year, so it’s time to find the magic of betwixt and between. Bring a party hat and noise-makers into your sacred place. Remove all calendars and clocks. Go into a meditative state and find yourself in a place surrounded completely by a swirling fog. Unafraid and with interest, you look around. Emerging from the fog are images and messages that you need to know right at this point in your life. Watch and listen. Appearing in your left hand is an item that symbolizes the year passing and will be a guide for what to do about your history. Appearing in your right hand is an item that symbolizes what the coming year will bring and will be a guide for what to do as the future unfolds. Take a deep breath and return to the here and now, in your own place and body.

A Time For You Spell
January 7th, 2009

Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Lavender

The holidays are over and now is the perfect time to take some time just for you. It’s a good time to think about what you wish to accomplish during the coming year. First, brew a cup of your favorite herbal tea to help you relax. Light a vanilla-scented candle. Settle into a comfy chair with your tea. Have some pretty stationery and a nice pen on hand. As you sip your tea, write a list of twelve things you want to do in the year ahead. They don’t have to be major. Just simple things, such as reading a certain book or taking a workshop on a subject that interests you, would be fine. Repeat this ritual each month and review your list. As you accomplish your goals, write a sentence or two about how you felt when you achieved your objectives.

Attract a New Vehicle
January 9th, 2009

Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Mint

Get a small toy car or truck that resembles as much as possible the vehicle you wish to own. Be realistic; don’t use a Jaguar if what you’re likely to get is a Chevy. Mix a drop of motor oil with a drop of your own saliva and anoint the toy car, saying:

Come to me, come near to me, come next to me, transport me, convey me, carry me, be my chariot, be my carriage, be my car. (Change the last word as needed to “truck,” “van,” etc.)

Wrap the toy car in a piece of cloth—preferably silk, but cotton would do. Carry it with you in a pocket or purse. Do not leave it in your car, if you have one. Repeat the anointing and chanting every three days until you find your new vehicle.

Meditation for Magical Strength
January 28th, 2009

Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Marjoram

The development of greater magical ability requires the development of a stronger association with the self. If your own self-awareness and self-development are not on track, your magical practice will not be on track either. It’s important to spend a bit of time better connecting with yourself each day. Before starting your day, take the time to do a short meditation. Light a candle (tealights work well) and settle yourself comfortably. Take “inventory” of your internal self. Focus on the colors at your main chakra points; they should be clear and glowing. If not, take time to clear and re-energize that chakra area. Next, take time to reaffirm your grounding and shielding. Strong grounding and good, elastic shielding help keep you balanced. Lastly, focus on your positive intentions for the day. Focus magical energy toward areas you feel could be troublesome. Focus energy on a day accomplished in right relation with the universe and its inhabitants. Focus on learning something new today, just for you. Take a moment to wind down, extinguish the candle, and go into the day focused, balanced, and in harmony with yourself.

Let the Sun Return
January 29th, 2009

Color of the day: Green
Incense of the day: Carnation

Winter may still own the land, but there are signs that we are moving closer to spring. Daylight lingers a little longer in the evening, and some early snow crocuses begin to bloom about now. The ancient belief is that the Sun should be encouraged to return at this time of year through rituals and spells. Here is one method. After dusk has turned to night, light a white taper candle. Open your front door and step outside. Whisper these words, “Candle burn, Sun return.” The candle flame represents the Sun illuminating the darkness of winter. Now walk through your home carrying the candle; try not to let the flame go out. Visualize each room energized by the Sun’s warmth. Place the candle on a table or altar. End this ritual by scrying as you gaze into the flame. What do you see?

Spell for Peace
January 30th, 2009

Color of the day: Purple
Incense of the day: Vanilla

We know that the very first signs of spring are just around the corner, and it’s time to breathe a deep sigh and release any stress carrying over from winter. Bring peace to your heart. Light a blue candle and your favorite incense. As you gaze into the flame, feel yourself letting go of any stress you are holding. Now you are open to bring peace into your heart for the days ahead. Hold a tumbled rose quartz to your heart and feel the loving vibrations it fills you with.

Spirit of peace, find a home within my open heart
Peace, I carry with me now, serenity finds a start

You can keep the stone with you. Anytime you have a stressful day, sit somewhere quietly and hold the stone close to your heart, remembering the magic of this peaceful January day.
