It was difficult to put weight on the balls of his feet when Anoki didn't really have them. Leaning forward only put him off balance, but he could do it-
And now he'd made the teacher come over. Wincing, Anoki looked down at the ground. "Sorry," he mumbled, redoubling his efforts. Finally he found that staying centered was the best way of not falling over, and he looked up at the teacher hopefully. "Is th-this okay?"

Of course Kuyoja was still trying to get accustomed to teaching children who were all rather different and unique unto themselves. Once he felt that the child's weight was evenly distributed he released his hold slowly. He nodded his head at the question.
"Yes it is fine." he replied as he then moved back into his own stance in front of Anoki.
"Pivoting is the first thing to learn. If you can pivot you was using the least amount of energy as well optimising the distance and readiness to turn while fighting." He instructed as he turned a foot and then shifted his body so that he turned left with quite a bit of agility.
"Now I want you to watch me do this...a couple of time before you attempt." Came his voice as he then pivoted back to the original stance.

If nothing else, this teacher was way more patient than his mother. And this was going way better than his last attempt at a fighting class. But Anoki kept his happiness under his hat (or horns) and kept watching the teacher. He didn't want to get too excited and miss something.
"Pivoting," he repeated, not moving yet. Rather than move his feet to turn around, it looked like he just shifted his weight and used that to spin. It did look easier than walking in a half-circle, and faster too. He shifted slightly, as if trying to imitate the motion without looking like he was doing anything yet. He didn't even notice himself doing it, his eyes still focused on Kujoya's movements.

Kuyoja pivoted back and forth a couple more times before he relaxed his stance and then turned to face his student. He noticed curiously that the boy had been paying quite a bit of attention to his demonstration. Pleased with such attentiveness the emotion wasn't betrayed on his solemn face.
"You seem to be getting the hang of the balancing." He noted in a ...tone that could of been praise though it sound too matter of fact.
"Now show me the move I just demonstrated." He continued as he folded his hands behind his back standing perhaps a bit too straight it looked uncomfortable.

If Anoki noticed the praise, he didn't show it. He was too used to getting only corrections and scoldings, and was pleased just to not be making awful mistakes in this class.
"Yes, sir." He had to put his weight forward, but not too far forward, or he'd fall out of position again. Then, instead of moving his feet, he had to move his weight, and let the feet turn in the right direction.
He was clumsy and not at all fast, but he did manage to swivel so he was facing away from the teacher, and back again. Not satisfied, he tried it again. Again, he came to a stop partway through and had to shift all over again to make it all the way around. "Do you have to m-move all the t-time, or j-just at the b-beginning?" he asked, still trying to get it down in one fluid movement.

Satisfied with his students progres he turned his attention to him when the question was posed at him.
"This would be used any time during a fight. It is a quick and efficient means of moving, though it is standardly used when fightin multiple opponents and close combat." He continued.
"Now we will work on arm positions," The red headed teacher moved to show the standing position with his arms up close to his body. "Having your arms arranged in this manner means you have the optimal position. You can deflect blows and strike without haveing to waste energy by bringing your arm up from your sides." He continued as he showed how to strike in the air as well shift his arms to be more like a sheild.
"Can you see that I don't waste precious energy this way?"

Anoki nodded, still trying to pivot smoothly. The teacher hadn't really answered his question, so he figured it was one of those things he had to work out on his own. He made sure to repeat the information the teacher gave him in his head, shuddering a little as he did so. He hoped he'd never have to fight a bunch of people on his own... but if it came to that, he would be prepared.
Next move already? While Anoki was used to going through material quickly, he still felt he wanted to practice a little more. But class was for learning, he reasoned, and study time for working out the details. So he copied the teacher's position, and copied the notes mentally. Close to the body, up from the sides... but how far up? It was difficult for him to judge, and he wasn't sure his position was 100% correct.
It was then that he noticed the teacher wanted him to answer. "Y-yes, sir!" he said quickly, a little louder than was necessary.

Pausing he turned to Anoki and then watched him he moved only to nudge his arms a little bit up and shift his hands only slightly. He nodded his head approvingly. He didn't expect Anoki to be good at the move as soon as he was taught. But that was what practicing was for.
"It may seem like we are rushing, but it is good to have some base knowledge and then you can always refine the technique at home." He explained. He wondered if he was flustering the child.
Sliding back into position he stood directly across from Anoki his arms up like a boxer may. He shifted the form slightly so his arm became a sheild.
"Now you try."

Oops, it seemed his anxiety was apparent to the teacher. Anoki gulped and nodded, trying to hold the position he'd been shifted into. "I'm s-sorry if I'm s-slow," he said, sounding miserable. He was used to teachers being upset with him, but being a disappointment was always... well, disappointing.
There was nothing to do about it but keep trying, though, so Anoki ever so slowly lifted his arm up, doing his best to mirror the move while keeping the other arm locked in place. When he felt he was as close as he could get on his own, he looked back up at the teacher, hoping he wasn't too far off.

Kuyoja nodded his head approving of how Anoki was positioned before he reached forward slowly as if striking at him but to give a demonstration.
"With your arm up in this position you can see that you only have to shift slightly to block me. Your arm is an effective sheild but you need to be careful what you deflect with it. Shrugging off hits its a good method but some opponents hit too hard for it to be effective." He explained his knuckles barely touching Anoki's arm before he withdrew his hand.
"You always have to be watching your opponent and judging their strengths to your defence. A sheild can only be so strong, and cannot protect you from everything, but then you learn to dodge instead." He explained before they moved forward.
"Okay now that you know the basic positions we will move to striking. We will start with straight forward punches. " He stated as he moved and then stood beside Anoki. Slipping into the position he had just taught he then struck out like a boxer may, although it was more refined.

"W-wait." Anoki understood everything, more or less. The arm in front was used as a shield, but only for some hits. Some were too strong, so he had to judge, and dodge the strong ones. "How d-do you tell wh-which ones are t-too t-tough? I'm n-not sure..."
He'd spoken out of turn again. Anoki gulped and bowed his head. "S-sorry, I d-didn't mean t-to interrupt. F-forward p-p-punches, right?" He experimentally copied the teacher, but his heart wasn't in it and his strike had no oomph behind it.

Kuyoja didn't look annoyed at being interrupted but he paused in his instruction as he realized the boy was still uncertian.
"Unfortunately you will only be able to guess which strikes will be too much for you to handle. If you are use to a particular sparring partner for example you could learn to predict how they will strike at you and thus learn how to dodge. A good example, would be to use your arm as a sheild only if you know the person you are up against or..as a last measure." He explained with a nod of his head.
"If I am going to fast, please let me know." He continued as he turned to face his student. He had noticed that Anoki didn't seem as enthusiastic as before.

Having a teacher tell him to guess felt weird, even wrong, but Anoki didn't argue. Magic, he knew, was more a science than an art. There was room for design, but you had to follow the rules. Fighting was very different from magic, so maybe it was more an art than a science, more emotion than rules. Put that way, Anoki could understand the uncertain nature better, and he nodded.
"I... I th-think I can k-keep up. This is j-just th-the base, r-right?"

Kuyoja nodded his head at the question, "Yes everythign we are learning about today are fundimentally just starting poses and the learning platforms for more advanced attacks." He stated as he turned to stand beside Anoki again.
"When striking you need to make sure you take a step forward. Momentum behind your attack with add more power to it. Don't run of course and try to minimize the amount of movement as it will only become a waste of energy ifyou take too many moves to acheive the end strike." He continued as he took as step forward his arm coming out to jab forward at the same time.
