Divash
Personally I'm really not fond of Hallowe'en at all.

1. It's a Christian holiday. Hallowe'en = All Hallows' Eve = All Saints Eve = the day before All Saints Day. A Jew doesn't need to celebrate other religions' holidays.

2. It is also a Pagan and Wiccan holiday, Samhain (pronounced SOW-en). Look it up on Wikipedia. A Jew doesn't need to celebrate other religions' holidays.

3. Running around and begging for food from your neighbors isn't something you do if you have enough to eat. If you don't have enough to eat, you shouldn't be asking for candy, you should be asking for a proper meal.

4. Everyone's wearing masks. If a kid goes missing, who knows? "She was dressed as a witch." "He was dressed as a pirate." Oh, great. Well, what did the kidnapper look like? "He looked like Darth Vader." Great, so we've got a kidnapper we can't identify (and thanks to the microphone in his mask, we can't identify his voice positively either), who's taken kids we can't identify. Yeah, um... sorry, Mom and Dad, but you actually set yourself and your kid up for this event.

And now a counter argument, point by point.

1. & 2. It's not as religious a holiday as it is a children's holiday. They get that one day of the year to run around as Batman or some other prominent superhero and get to play dress up outside. It also gives adults an opportunity to play dress up with their kids. Yes it's based on Samhain & All Hallows Eve, but the religious context is almost non existent outside of Neo-Pagans who celebrate Samhain as we would celebrate Purim, and by that I mean, they drink... a lot.... But that's Samhain, not Halloween, regardless on what people are doing as a whole.

3. Technically they're not begging for food, they're extorting. Trick or Treat means, "If you don't give us something we like, your front porch is gonna get it!" However this is a bit of silliness. If kids get bad treats they aren't really supposed to set off a cherry bomb in your mailbox or set your lawn on fire. TECHNICALLY they're not supposed to, some do, but those kids are looking more to cause mischief, than to actually get a bag full of candy.

4. Kids usually travel in hordes on Halloween, as do police. Also if the kids are young enough to be kidnap bait, the parents usually go out with them. I have trick or treated for several years when I was a kid. In the cities I've lived in as a child, not I nor one of my friends was ever snatched up or went missing during Halloween. Also all stories of contaminated candy and people slipping razor blades into apples have all been certified as hoaxes or lies.

And now a song by Haywood Banks

Mommy and Daddy sit in the mini-van
Mace and a cell-phone in their nervous hands
It's hard to scare the neighbor into giving up the loot
When you're a ninja in a down coat at four in the afternoon

Who'll hear the ghosts and the goblins cry
They keep on thinking of the days gone by
When the little kids were frightened it is said
Only by the Ghouls in their heads.

Can't wait for February when we can all talk about if Saint Valentine's Day is a religious holiday or not.

I believe you should treat everyday like Valentine's Day if you actually love someone. Why save 2 or 3 dates out of the year just to express your love through some material item? I get so frustrated in February with all the diamond commercials on the radio. "A diamond is forever." Pft, so is slave labor apparently.

That being said, why not use everyday to run around and have fun? Halloween is about bonding with your children, merriment, etc. That doesn't seem so hard as an everyday task. Though I don't know how a person would respond if you randomly asked them for candy outside of the 31st.

And anyway, why can't we celebrate Halloween for what it actually is? ADROCK'S BIRTHDAY!

Well- it's similar to the Christian New Year. I don't actually celebrate the religious aspect, but it gets me off of school and I get to hang out with friends. I don't object. blaugh

I can't celebrate All Saints dat because I am not Catholic. I'm a lite-Catholic called a Methodist. Actually, I can and I will celebrate it this year. Not Catholic still but I am going to a Catholic church....another holiday.

On the main subject...

I live in a pretty tolerant area. If you made a comment like that, you would be the social outcast, especially against the Jews. People in my area go after the Muslims...poor them. I guess it really isn't tolerant. Oh well, better than where I used to live.

Anti-Muslim sentiment is what you get when you blame a religion for one of the most nationally devastating acts ever committed on American soil.

Catholic lite? all the guilt with half the pope?

I thought that was the Anglican church.

Ok ok ok...

lets get one thing straight. All religions have a lunatic fringe. Muslims have Osama bin Ladin, Christians have Fred Phelps, we have those knuckle heads in Beit Shemesh. Even neo-pagans have a lunatic fringe.

The lunatic fringe does not represent the whole of the religion, only a segment. This is to say that if you belong to a certain religion, it does not mean you belong to the lunatic fringe.

FRUSTRATION! I have to stop watching the news because if I hear one more thing about Muslim insurgents, I'm gonna pop. To me it just seems like they want to equate extremists with your garden variety Islam, but L-rd stop me before I start sounding like a conspiracy theorist.

Here is an interesting little documentary if you have time. He talks about my hometown, Fayetteville. Emphasis on the "a", you don't make it a long "i". smile

Al Jazeera did a documentary on your home town on how Religiously Tolerant the SOUTH is?!

Now I can die happy, knowing that I have, in fact, seen it all.

well, we all know where Kingpin is from now.

I think just about everyone knows I'm from Arkansas by now. Cindy could probably murder me in my bed if she felt the need to, we're friends on Facebook! xd

I love how he went to the rodeo! I've never been personally, too redneck, but I loved that in Springdale (that's outside of Fayetteville) the MC explained we have the freedom to worship whether it be in a synagogue, church, or mosque. He didn't even get booed. I was very pleased with my neighbors.

Anyway, don't go any farther east. Then you start running into the Klansmen from Helena who want to kill Barack. :

One thing about that Kingpin, it wasn't a very well put together plot. The FBI and the Secret Service believe that as opposed two guys trying to start a race war, it was more likely Jethro and Cletus talking smack over a few to many PBR.

I regard them as not the bad kind of crazy but the dangerous kind of stupid.

Well, the same goes for you as well! Though you are absolutely nothing like I pictured you as before.

I knew it had to be pretty half brained. Neo-Nazis never have been the brightest crayons. Especially the young ones.

And Cindy, I've said this before: I'm really bad at imagining people to look like their avi's. I was so disappointed when Yoni didn't have long grey hair.

I know! (Though his hair is pretty cool.)
