Well, I've taken one basic psych class, but most of it is personal interest. I'm bi polar and since I was diagnosed I've been interested in everything psych.

Yeah, I've taken a basic psych class too, my dad's a therapist, so I've heard some thing here and there. I should listen more often, though. I'm thinking of going to art therapy so these days I've been paying more attention.
What type of therapy does your dad do?
I've never done art therapy, I'm not very visiualy artistic, but I love theatre; that would be hard to do in art therapy. xp

My dad's a counsellor and psychotherapist. I love theatre too, though I'm not very involved in anything theatrical, but I am an art student so... yeah, things just kind of fell into place. Are you interested in being some kind of a therapist?
Well, I used to want to, but now my older brother is going to school to get his masters in psych and I moved out early and didn't realy have the option of going away to school because I had to work full time and pay rent and all that fun adult stuff. So right now I'm going to a JC and doing all my Gen. Ed. stuff and I'm was going to get my RN but have been thinking about being a social worker.

Iagree, for one, from what I've seen, the superego seems to be more developed in females then males. This is just another one of those complexes Freud created to appease he believe that males and the better sex.

Well, sicoe17 wanted to talk about it, and I agree that it's an interesting topic. It isn't exactly related to the topic of riot grrrl. But it's a curious enough subject, that I think it deserves a thread. Besides, I'd like this to be a general open thread to discuss other similar bizarre effects out psyche has.

From what I know, an example of the placebo effect, would be feeding someone pills telling them it helps them, when in the end they are just sugar pills. From what I know, results have shown an improvement in whatever the patient was supposed to be treated for?

How could this be?

What do you think about it?

Any other bizarre things our brain does?
well my sci teacher, who is also the psychology teacher, told me that positive thinking can enable the brain to react in differently than negitive thinking. Not just having a positive mind but maybe body as well. In her case, her stuggle to overcome a car accident that involve a truck smashing into her. She remain positive and hopeful that she can be heathly and walk again. She's now heathly and she can walk. Most doctors are speechless that she's live and she can move like normal people. Also this placebo effect can be related to yoga, tai chi or other spiritual things. They say meditation can help the body to have less sleep and also study show that positive thing enable people to live longer. positive thinking many cause certain chemicals to react and maybe enable to fight off the infections.

This topic just makes me wonder just how much our mind controls our physical health. It brings up that old saying, "mind over matter" Or maybe its too short to be classified as a saying. Still makes me think about that. What is the power of thought?
PostPosted: Mon Dec 19, 2005 4:26 pm

It's amazing what people can do in extreme situations... It is my experience that we can get over just about anything if we set our minds to it. I wonder what I would do in a crisis. Hmm...

I myself have never been in much extreme danger, but I think I'd have a tendency to remain rationnal.

What can move a person to chose between life and death in such a serious mind blowing way?

I'm sorry, I've just skimmed the topic, but here's my two cents:

The brain is a powerful thing. I've read about how a few healthy people were told they had a terminal illness (fake) and that they would die in six months. A few of them actually died in at the end of six months, because they believed it.
