“What happened to half my pants?” Austin repeated, raising his eyebrows and fighting a scowl. It was getting way too late – even for him. He had no idea how to speak to this girl. “I look like Oual because he’s my uncle.” She probably doesn’t know what an uncle is, he thought. “Erm, we live together and he’s part of my family,” Austin added. Does she know what family is? “And these pants are just a different look."
Violet’s eccentric style combined with her obvious retardation left Austin feeling as though the train of normalcy had fallen off the tracks. A tense feeling grew in the pit of his stomach and he looked around for some way to entertain her.
"There was this thing the person I live with showed me once that had a lady that looked like me on it," Violet said, not about to be derailed from her rant by something as silly as a subject change. "I think it was me, only it must have been me from the future because I am not as old as the lady was supposed to be. So I thought maybe you were somebody from the past, only you escaped from the thing unlike the lady."
