Oh my goodness! Okay, so I woke up around three this afternoon - and I couldn't find Luse anywhere. Of course I panicked, and I looked - Only to find him inbetween the bed and the dresser, making himself up a web. The thing looked fine to me, but it was more than apparent he had scrapped the project once already in favor of giving it a second shot...

I just watched...amazed...and then curious. ...I had caught some bugs...but...what exactly do they seem to prefer eating? I suppose the only way to know, would be to observe...I've read that they can also catch and eat things as large as frogs and mice, but insects...might be a more instinctual start for him.

So I set all the insects I had caught free, and allowed for him to take what he would while I started my daily 'routine'...

I know he can't talk yet, but, there will be some better form of communication now I hope...and I will take him to the shop later, perhaps...it seemed silly to me to take him when he was only a plush, but now maybe some interaction could do him some good.

So, I've been catching all these bugs, and setting them free in the basement, so Lusiphur can eat. I suppose it's vain to hope that there won't be any other Velvets that'll be insects, so he doesn't get confused and try to eat one of them, but they are natural predators...

So I suppose it'll have to do. He seems to be doing well on it...goodness.

I've known people in Gaia to have tens of pets, I don't see how they do it...how they keep everything straight...I've got this one, and it seems enough, though I may be getting some others soon...

I've got a couple of secret santa's sneaking around...hee. I can't wait.

My my, where does the time go? A little over a month ago, I started buying some educational books so I could teach Lusiphur how to read - I'm not too terribly interested in teaching him arithmetic or science or anything (I hear tale that Velvets, starting as proper plush, never really grow all the necessary bits and pieces most animals have, so I'm sure some motives of science might confuse him more than interest him), but I'm quite keen on teaching him to read, and speak - though he might not use his voice yet, I'm sure still he can learn.

He has a way about him, he speaks without words a lot, with little motions of his arms and palps, and occasionally he seems to sway and dance - never for extended periods of time, but just long enough to get the point across. He's really quite talented, I think...

Meanwhile, I've found he's taken quite a liking to to the butterflies and moths that he tends to catch...the dragonflies, too, when he can get them! I wonder about that, but really, it's not anything unusual. Everyone has a favorite food, right? The prettier it is when it's presented, sometimes, the tastier one can imagine it to be.

I've also been reading to him each night. We've been working our way through the Silmarillion, and we're almost halfway through. He seemed very interested in Ungoliant and her...appetites (I suppose spiders that eat light would be very interesting to a darker creature like Luse), but he seemed more interested in the doings of Melkor and Sauron; another reason I hope to teach him this language well. If he admires those who are sweet of tonuge, perhaps he would also appreciate being sweet of tongue.

I'm afraid last night was a terribly frightful experience...I don't even know where to start. Yume, I believe I recall her name to be, and her Velvets (one of which, the mouse, we had seen before) had come into the shoppe and...another, whose name I don't know. A young squirrel...

Well, it seems after a small time of peace, this young squirrel had the idea to attack my dear spider! I don't know why...

Frightened and of course, confused, my spider fought back, effectively paralyzing this dear squirrel. Soon after, an older snake entered the shoppe and took care of the squirrel, I believe, but I had to return home...I had a class to teach. (Ugh, seriously, who gets up at five am save for the forsaken?)

Since then, Lusiphur hasn't really eaten too well...I don't know if he feels bad, or if he's got other things on his mind, but either way...I hope he doesn't keep this up. A young spider needs to eat! I even went through the trouble of catching his favorite red butterflies and releasing them in the basement for him...

I hope he'll 'come around'.

I'm also seriously considering that, whence he reaches such a stage that his childhood officially begins, I'll start teaching him hand to hand combat. No weapons! It seems he has his own, really...but hand to hand is always useful and doesn't require one to keep unecessary equipment.

In this, I hope honestly to 'harness' his fighting ability, and teach him to look before he throws a punch, to avoid unecessary conflict.

But first; teaching him to read...I am still working on this, at least two hours daily added to my schedule now. Lack of sleep?

Did I ever sleep?

Well, if there was any dissertion in Lusiphur's mind about what happened the other night, it's gone now...though I'll admit that was some time ago, even in my own eyes.

He continues to eat well - not too much, or too little to my knowledge. He's been working very hard at his kraft, making webs all over the place...forcing me to clean more often than I usually do! Especially the old projects he wants to scrap.

I've taken a friend's advice, and begun teaching him the game of chess, strategy.

We finished the Silmarillion some time ago, and have gone on to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so that he may know also of Sauron's end.

This past weekend we went camping, though for two out of the three nights, the cold managed to chase us into a hotel...I nearly lost Lusiphur a few times to the wilderness, as he was so fascinated by it that he ran into it without giving me any warning at all!

I do hope he enjoyed his time though.

Well, we have continued to travel - though we have passed far beyond Gaian borders in doing so. Even on the road, I have continued to play chess with Luse, though I fear he may grow far too good for me and that I will need to find better opponents for him.

On this journey I have introduced Lusipher to several different other kinds of 'food' - though I hope he will take them as the treats they are, and not hope to have them each and every day. His kraftwork continues to grow wonders...

We have finished Fellowship of the Ring by now, though we continue on to Two Towers - I feel every moment as though he is learning greatly from what he reads, and part of me hopes that he will grow beyond me - beyond my control, though the other half hopes that he'll remember the hand that feeds him and...not bite it.

I have little else to say, though, we are doing well...

And nothing bad has happened yet - I hope for continuity in this trend.

Goodness now, I have absolutely no excuse for myself you see...it seems things just slipped out of my control for awhile and then...I'm not sure what happened, or how it happened, but somehow it did. Lusiphur hasn't done any growing, but he has been doing a lot of learning...it seems to keep him busy from the fact that he hasn't advanced any.

He finished the Lord of the Rings series, the Silmarillion, and has moved on to many of the books off my shelf. Some fiction such as Firefox (a spy novel), Mercedes Lackey's Gryphon series (fantasy), Dune (sci fi), and also some of the non-fiction, Sun Tzu's Art of War (military tactics), many of the WWII books I have around, and some of the magic ones as well. And no, I do not mean sleight of hand.

If nothing else I hope he'll learn from the mistake both Napoleon and Hitler shared; their feeble attempts to attack Russia during their winter. Who knows? Perhaps he'll become ruler of the world one day...he certainly seems to have a way about him.

He has continued as healthy though, and for that I'm glad. The fashion of his craft has become more in tune to his wishes, and he's much happier with the webs he's been creating lately as far as style and look goes...he still doesn't wander outside much without my say-so but I have installed something similar to a doggie door on the only window out of the basement for him, and constructed a small roof over it so it doesn't leak in when it rains.

I wonder how many of those dead birds outside are his doing...

My little Lusiphur, growing so fast.

I make no vows on this but I do hope to get Lusiphur some other Velvet interaction soon...he seems happy as he is now, but I realize with some animals they may just hide their 'illness' (as it were) until it is already too late - I hope to intervene on anything like that before it is thus. At worst, he doesn't like the other Velvets, and will hide with me.

At best, he gets some interaction and starts to feel better about himself!

I think he's sick of watching old Kurt Russel films though, admittedly I've put him through a lot of Snake Plissken and The Thing; and the only thing really tying those movies together are the main actor and the director. I think it was a relief to him when I bought the second Pirates movie.

I dare say he found Davey Jones an interesting character...either that or he had a deep appreciation of his mad organ playing skills. He always does that little happy dance whenever something pleases him...it is alluring, and deadly...

Child Quest

"Ha ha! Stuck in the forest are we silly spider? You'll never find the door as tiny as you are!" Lusiphur and Sin both watched as the grasshopper began to hop away, taunting them further, "Have fun silly spider. Try not to get eaten now!" Lusiphur showed no visible change in emotion to the grasshopper's taunting, but Sin was flustered. After all, the forest seemed to have grown so large around them! It was one thing to wake up in a small forest, but to wake up dwarfed by your charge...?

After all, Lusiphur was not, by nature, a terribly small spider - Sin felt that surely the forest must have grown around them, and that grasshopper was more than king-sized! Perhaps he got fat by making fun of new visitors to the forest and meanwhile doing little but eating, Sin thought bitterly. Carefully she made her way through the forest of grass towards Lusiphur, who turned to welcome her presence a little closer; it wasn't as though he was entirely calm about the fact that his caretaker was now about as tall as he was! He simply thought it best not to act out on those emotions, squishing them mercilessly as he thought best how to find this 'door' the grasshopper spoke of.

With little ceremony Lusiphur reached to scoop his caretaker up and place her gently upon his back. Even if he couldn't use words he knew she would understand that it was easier for one of them to walk while the other kept lookout - or at least, this way, she wouldn't fall behind and he wouldn't lose her. Although he knew she could take care of herself things had changed and that often - as he had observed in the past - brought people to 'freak out' and not remember what they were immediately capable of. In fact it had begun to frustrate him he could not more easily communicate, but the problem at hand was much larger than his petty inconveniences.

Lusiphur kept in mind where the grasshopper had gone, considering carefully a moment before he followed, although not along the same path that the grasshopper took. As they traveled he noticed the sound of running water not far off and meandered towards it with his spider's walk, slow and deliberate until they found a strong running stream. It stood to reason that many animals would come to this stream for water and that perhaps they could find direction to the door by this. Shuffling into some nearby plant life to better hide, Lusiphur settled quietly as Sin hopped off his back, moving towards the stream cautiously for a drink of water.

Perhaps it was just her impatience, but it seemed that they'd been walking longer than she cared to imagine. However, Sin understood what Lusiphur was trying to do by the stream - at least to a fault - and headed back quickly to wait with him. As much as she hated to admit it, he was definitely the more superior of the two of them at this point as far as knowing what needed to be done. "I'm glad you've got a plan," she murmured quietly under her breath, "because there's certainly no way I'd be able to catch up to that blabbering grasshopper." The thought amused Lusiphur and he brought his foremost limbs together, rubbing them in such a way as the sound almost imitated laughter.

"Laughter is good," hissed a slightly deep voice from behind the two visitors, "laughter keeps you healthy. Laughter keeps you alive. What a strange pair," the voice rumbled. "A spider and - a human? Or maybe a pixie. Much too small to be a human." Lusiphur turned skillfully on his long legs and watched with amazement as a large checkered garter snake slithered right up to them and drew itself up to better observe the pair. "But then, pixies should have wings..."

"I am not a pixie," Sin protested, "and I am not human!" Lusiphur 'chuckled' again and watched the snake silently, eyes on it's every movement - if he had to meet the creature as an opponent, it would be rough indeed, he doubted he could have penetrated those scales in order to inject any venom. That didn't mean that if this creature posed himself as a threat that anything would stop him from trying. The sound of Lusiphur's laughter calmed Sin down and she recalled the grasshopper. "Look, sir - we're trying to find a door to get out of this forest. The grasshopper mentioned that there was a door..."

The snake also seemed to size them up, but after a moment only nodded and crossed it's coils casually, better balancing himself so he could tower over the pair. "It's true, and there is a door," he murmured softly, "but only the grasshopper knows where it is. And only the fox knows where the grasshopper is." His head moved casually, left to right, as though he were afraid someone might hear him talking; it was as if they were conspiring against something much larger than themselves. "You can find the fox across the stream, his burrow is marked by a flat rock he uses as an overhang. Be careful of that old reynard...he knows what he's doing."

"Thanks, I think," Sin responded softly as she watched the snake sway in a way that nearly reminded her of Lusiphur, who was tugging on the back of her jacket gently. She turned and climbed quickly onto his back so that they could walk the stream and find a way over it to seek out the fox's home. Lusiphur wondered at the reliability of the snake's advice but it was all the lead they had and his mind touched briefly on his caretaker's discomfort at being so small in a world within which she was used to being so large. It wasn't long before they found a small 'bridge' made of stone that seemed more accident than purposeful and made their way with caution. It wasn't very difficult to find the fox's den...

...it was more difficult to find the fox. Apparently he had not been there most of the morning, a fact Sin pointed out and considered odd since fox were primarily stereotyped as nocturnal. Sin disembarked from her charge's back as he moved into the cave to inspect. The cave was very neat and clean, but still lived in, Lusiphur noted as he found no sign of other life except for that which a fox may have indeed created. Lusiphur was so distracted by his exploring that he was startled to hear a scream outside, the hairs on his legs standing on end before he moved swiftly on his seemingly delicate legs to investigate; the sight he found not only displeased him, it made him very angry.

"What a tasty little snack," snarled the fox staring Sin down as a creature several times her size, "I think you'll make perfect for a midnight meal!" The fox licked his muzzle, unaware of Lusiphur as he climbed the side of the fox hole to the slab rock the snake had mentioned earlier. After anchoring what he assumed was a strong bit of webbing to the rock and spinning some extra in what he theorized could act as a bungee cord Lusiphur leapt off the rock and towards the fox, releasing the web when he was assured his trajectory was not going to land him on the ground but instead the fox's back, where he planted his fangs swiftly and bit down to inject his poison, causing the fox to yelp and leap although Lusiphur did not let go.

Within moments the fox buckled under his own weight and fell to the forest floor, panting as he tried to move his limbs but found himself unable. "I see you brought a friend, human! What a trickster you are," he managed to growl, apparently able to move one portion of his gargantuan ego without worry even as he lay paralyzed. Lusiphur crawled down quietly to join himself at Sin's side and observe the fox quietly - knowing only Sin had the words for what needed to be asked. How he longed for the day he would learn to speak! Sin composed himself and moved forward with a quiet glare which brought a hiss from the fox, "Well out with it! You want to know something...what is it?"

Sin simply glared at the reynard before marching forward boldly and threatening to hit him on the nose as hard as she possibly could. "Where's the grasshopper, you jerk?" Sin half felt like hitting him anyways - he'd have deserved it, right? She was stopped before she even brought her arm back for the blow, as the fox began chuckling with delight!

"Ohhh, I see, that infantile insect insulted you and now you want back at him hmmm? I can't say I blame you," he growled a bit, "and if I'm going to die from a spider bite then I might as well have a little bit of fun before I go...you'll find him to the east, keep walking until you find the big blue tree. At night he likes to roost beneath it's roots, in the earth...there's a small entrance in particular he likes. Shaped like a diamond...be sure to let him know I said hello," he snarled before he tried to twist around and snap at them, failing the task miserably.

Lusiphur nudged Sin gently and they started to the east at a quiet pace, Lusiphur using the silence to plan before Sin cleared her throat softly to get his attention, and gaining it successfully. "Should I have told him that your bite can't kill yet?" Lusiphur regarded her a moment, before lifting his legs to make the noise of soft chuckling once more as they walked. Tell the fox? Whatever for? By the time he figured it out on his own - probably after waking up perfectly fine in the middle of the forest and making a complete fool of himself - they would be long gone. Grinning with amusement Sin reached over and patted his back gently, enjoying the walk on her own even if riding him would have been faster.

It was nearly sunset when they reached the 'blue' tree - which wasn't as blue as either Sin or Lusiphur had imagined it to be, of course they were in a forest so it was only as blue as the wood could manage to get without having looked like it was painted over. Without wasting time Lusiphur lunged forward to find the diamond-shaped entrance in the roots, feeling rather lucky that there was only one such shape that could not be easily mistaken for another. With little time to loose he moved to get to work, spinning one of his finest webs yet to cover the entrance to the roots with the knowledge that the lack of light at night below the forest canopy would not give away the web's position.

When he had finished Lusiphur moved to heard his caretaker to a spot in some nearby bushes, feeling fraught with excitement that the grasshopper had not returned yet, although it was dark and just past sunset as they made themselves comfortable to wait for his presence. Sin had a good idea of what he was up to and was delighted herself to get to be there - in a way, be with him, really! - to see how he hunted and how he waited, and all he did when it was time to get down to business. It wasn't like she'd never seen him capture a cricket before, but she'd certainly never been down to his size when he did it. In a sense it gave her a deeper appreciation for everything he went through, even if they were to her least favorite part - the waiting game.

In spite of the lengthy wait Lusiphur's senses were sharp as a whip and when he finally heard the sounds of that annoying grasshopper coming closer he inched a little further back into the bush - the anticipation was killer and if he swore he could hear his heart thumping loudly even if he knew it was probably just a trick of the mind. The wait was nearly over when the cocksure insect hopped closer to the diamond-shaped entrance and paused to look up at the night canopy, singing a bit of an old drinking song that Lusiphur recognized only because of one of Sin's relatives, just before he leapt squarely into the middle of the woven web and began cursing inexcusably like a sailor!

"Who the - what the - show yourselves!! Dirty spider! This is all your doing!" The grasshopper struggled furiously only to be entangled more in the web even as he snapped some of its anchors. Calmly Lusiphur stepped out of the plant and moved forward to 'greet' the grasshopper, obviously amused that the situation had been reversed between them. If the insect had such range for facial expression it surely would have sneered at the spider and his companion, disgusted at how easily their positions had been switched now that he was no longer in control. "Let me out of here. You want out of the forest, am I right?"

Lusiphur tilted his head in the manner that said he was thinking about it, Sin not knowing everything that went on in that mind but fairly familiar with most of his expressions, and then moved his head in a soft nod that was an unequivocal 'yes'. They were greeted by a scoff from the grasshopper, who for all his years of experience in the wood seemed eager to give up his 'secret' if he could only be free of the sticky web! "The other side of the tree! There's another entrance into the wood itself, about midway up - it will take you home. Now let me out of here! Let me free! I've told you want you wanted to know!" Moving forward with giddy anticipation, Lusiphur reached out with silent intent as he reached for the webbing that had already bound the insect and pulled it tighter.

It was no trouble at all for him to wrap the grasshopper up in what was an intentionally sloppy job - he might have eaten the creature if he didn't feel such disgust towards it and felt no need to 'dirty' himself with such a creature's matter. When he had finished he motioned that Sin should mount his back and as soon as she had he was up the tree, crawling around to the other side to find the knot hole the grasshopper had described, and with no reservations he climbed into it, traveling silently through the darkness and towards the light that was their final destination - home. In spite of all the trouble they'd been through Lusiphur wasn't sure that he'd minded it too much. In fact, as much as he'd gotten to exercise his skills he thought he might even like to do it again one day...

Goodness. Where to begin! Well, early April Lusiphur and I found ourselves in a rather odd predicament...but when we came out of it, things had changed. Lusiphur is a child now! It's strange to say but I think...they grow so fast! Perhaps too fast...I know, he's learned so much already, but I was always afraid that everything I was teaching him were the things he didn't want to learn...I never wanted to push myself on him.

Still, I've come to learn that he didn't mind learning to dance and in fact it's seemed to help his balance even as a child...I catch him practicing his footwork sometimes and it's absolutely adorable. His weaving appears to have become more skilled in that instant as well, and his poisons seem to be working a slight more quickly when he's taking down larger prey like birds.

Still, there is much for him to learn - and now that he can talk he's been able to tell me exactly what it is he desires to study! I've already picked up a few books for him on midieval torture techniques, poisons and hand to hand combat. He's expressed some interest in learning sword work, but I feel the need to caution him - it seemed to be after watching the movie
300 and as many connections as I have I doubt I could find anyone to teach him that, or the phalanx methods!

It's like the time when I was first playing Metal Gear Solid 3 and he seemed very interested in the screen and what was going on; perhaps I should play through it again to see if it was just a matter of things moving on the screen that he was interested in or if it was something more within the game. I suppose a few old Army manuals wouldn't be too difficult to get a hold of.

I've been trying to make him clothing but so far nothing seems to be working out. Doll's clothing is - for the most part - much too small for him. I'm definently going to have to measure something out, perhaps not in the way of pants but certainly in the way of a shirt. Not to 'humanize' him so much as teach him that he doesn't have to run around without one unless he wants to! Although it is summer so if that's what he desires then I'd understand...

So much to do! So little time to do it in.

Life has been busy this past half year. So much has been going on and so little of it I honestly remember enough to type here...although this was the first Halloween that I brought young Lusiphur to my annual masquerade with me, and he seemed to enjoy it greatly. Out of the ashes of my childhood I managed to ressurect some doll's clothing and craft for him something between a bucaneer and a musketeer's outfit; at least the hat remains the same!

His reading continues, and he's even begun to write just a little bit, although I can see it becoming an art form for him...even with two arms, without opposable thumbs the writing can get rather sloppy and difficult to understand, which frustrates him endlessly. I tell him it will take time and I believe he understands but...that doesn't mean it's any less difficult to deal with. He will learn though.

It seems that he's wanting to learn to sew as well since watching me but so far he has only managed to thread a needle and put together two pieces of fabric...I should help him, but I must admit that I work off patterns instead of out of my mind, and they really have no patterns for a child his size...we'll come up with something to be sure...

Anyhow, I'll hand the journal over to him now. It seems he's something to say himself, and I think that's only fair.

li fe has been very int eres ting for me now that i can do more on my own i do not have to al ways wait for mum to come home to start my day which is good be cause she has been busy with classs es and with her man friend it gives me a lot of time to think and to prac tice cap tur ing diff e rent in sects and an i mals. i have not seen my friends from the shop for some time and i hope mum will take me back soon. there is much to do

Awhile yet again, though I am all to blame. Lusiphur's progress with fabrics and learning to sew is...amusing to say the least! I'd never tell him that while he's frustrated, but sometimes to see those black little cheeks turn bright red (I never knew they could!) is very funny. He'll figure it out every time, just like I know he will, but I'm no stranger myself to the frustration of the moment.

I like to think his home life has gotten better, and more stable. Our home life even, but this journal is all about him...my live-in boyfriend has been teaching him how to play video games, which is more than I can do for him. (Oh don't get me wrong, I like video games, but it's hard for me to hand the controller over.)

He's gotten better at writing too, thanks to Mal. They really do teach you a
lot more than religion in a Catholic school! Of course it probably helps that he's an observant genius anyways. So...once more, from Lusiphur to you dear journal.

Hello. I have been learning a lot from Mal, its true. I still don't have a grasp of everything in the English language hes trying to teach me, but I think I have a good head start, especially in writing since Sin was always writing a lot. (Its really funny to watch Mal proof read her stuff though.)

He can't teach me to hunt though, so I've been doing a lot of that on my own. Sin says that maybe soon she'll take me to a lake and I can try to learn to hunt fish as well...though I don't think I'll be doing it the same way they will. My biggest insect so far has been a stag beetle...

I kept the horns. Maybe one day I'll have a small home of my own that I can put them on the wall in...I think I'd like that. Not to say I don't like Sin's home...but I want a space of my own where I can do my own thing. Well, that's all for now.
